"What threatens most collective identities today? To this question many will respond by pointing to the phenomenon of mass immigration, with most western countries being it´s central stage. The severity and importance of this phenomenon cannot be denied, nor can one deny social pathologies resulting from immigration. However, this view misses the central point since it does not focus enough on the causes of immigration – and in addition it lacks the right caliber approach.
The biggest threats to collective identities today is what has been called 'the system that kills the peoples'. that is to say the imposition of an across the board system of global homogenization that eliminates all human diversity: diversity of the peoples, of language and of culture. This system is associated with the notion of global governance and the global market. It´s underlying goal is an erasure of all boundaries in favour of a unified world. I call this system 'ideology of sameness', the ideology of the same.
Therefore I do not belong to those who argues that our identity primarily is threatened by the identity of others, although of course such a threat may exist. I think the greatest danger does not only threaten our [western] identities but also the identity of all other peoples. The greatest danger is the rise of indistincture, the eraser of differences, the destruction of shared values and popular cultures and lifestyles in a globalized world in which the only recognized value are those expressed by the price tags, the exchange value, that is to say by money."
