A deputy responding to a domestic disturbance call in La Puente early Friday shot and injured a man that authorities say was using a metal paint roller as a weapon.
Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department deputies were sent to the 600 block of Willow Avenue to investigate the report around 1:20 a.m. Upon arrival, the deputies found a man arguing with family members outside a home.
According to the sheriff’s department, deputies tried to detain the man when he “armed himself with a metal paint roller, which he used as a weapon.”
Deputies told the man to drop the paint roller multiple times, but he refused. Then, authorities said, they used pepper spray on the man, but he still wouldn’t comply.
A deputy then shot the man when he raised the paint roller as a weapon toward a deputy, authorities said.
The suspect, who was described as an adult Hispanic male in his 40s, was taken to a local hospital, where he’s listed in stable condition.
A deputy was also transported to a local hospital for treatment for his injuries.
Off Duty Chicago Cop In Hot Water After Shooting A Man's Dog When It Started Chasing Hers, The Dead Dog Was In Owner's Arms When Shot
New surveillance video has raised questions over an incident last month involving an off-duty Chicago Police officer who shot and killed a dog in the Bridgeport neighborhood.
On Tuesday, the Civilian Office of Police Accountability released two videos of the shooting and said the CPD should rethink the officer's employment status. Chicago Police issued no citations in the incident.
CPD records show that around 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, April 21, off-duty CPD Officer Carmen Mostek was walking her corgi east in the 500 block of West 29th Street, just west of Normal Avenue.
That was when her neighbor's dog, Aggie—described by Officer Mostek in a 911 call and by police in incident reports as a pit bull, but referred to by the owner as a "mutt" or a "mixed-breed rescue dog"—escaped from the backyard. According to Mostek, Aggie tried to bite the corgi.
At that point, the surveillance video shows Aggie's owner on the ground trying to separate the dogs.
Then, according to the video, Mostek shot the mixed-breed dog at very close range while Aggie was still in her owner's arms.
According to the tactical response report, Officer Mostek said, "I believed my dog would be killed in that in a split moment if I did not intervene."
The owner of the other dog is heard saying to the officer in the video: "You shot my dog! Why?"
The video showed that moments after Mostek fired, the corgi and Mostek ran away.
In a 911 call after the incident, Mostek said: "Hi, I'm an off-duty PO. I'm at 29th and Normal. There was a dog attacking my dog and I had to shoot it, and the neighbor's freaking out."
In a statement released in conjunction with these videos, COPA said, "Based upon the serious nature of the incident, COPA recommends that CPD evaluate the current assignment of the officer and whether administrative duties or relief of powers is warranted during the pendency of this investigation."
The dog's owner filed a lawsuit earlier this month against the City of Chicago, the CPD, and the officer involved in this case. The lawsuit alleges Mostek never tried to help separate the dogs before firing.
"Mostek shot Aggie to death, without justification, at point-blank range while Aggie was in the plaintiff's arms and plaintiff was in the line of fire," the complaint read.
The owner of the dog on Tuesday declined our request for an interview, citing that pending litigation.

Police body camera footage shows a man rushing at an officer with a large kitchen knife in each hand before the officer opened fire in Bridgeport last week, according to a preliminary report released by the Connecticut Office of Inspector General.
The report released Monday by Connecticut Inspector General Robert Devlin Jr. identifies the policeman who fired his gun as Bridgeport Police Officer Israel Colon and the knife-wielding suspect as 49-year-old Dale Stephenson, who was taken to St. Vincent’s Hospital following the shooting where he was listed in serious but stable condition.
Stephenson was shot last Thursday when Bridgeport officers responded to Birdseye Street just before 6 a.m. on the report of an individual acting erratically and knocking on doors while armed with a knife, according to Devlin’s preliminary report.
Officers who responded to the apartment complex encountered Stephenson in the middle of the road, footage from Colon’s body camera shows. Almost immediately upon arriving at the scene, Colon radios in asking for “a couple more units,” saying “This party has two knives,” the footage shows.
According to Devlin’s report, Bridgeport Officer Darryl Wilson Jr. also responded to the scene.
When Colon steps out of his cruiser, he calls out “Hey, brother” to Stephenson and tries to begin engaging him in conversation. Stephenson almost immediately sprints toward the policeman with a knife in each hand, the bodycam shows.
According to the footage, Colon screamed out “Don’t do it” three times as he backed away before firing his gun. Devlin said he fired three rounds and shot Stephenson, who can be seen in the bodycam footage falling to the ground and dropping the knives.
According to Devlin’s preliminary report, police provided medical aid to Stephenson before he was taken to the hospital in an ambulance.
A statement issued last week by Tiadora Josef, director of public information for the City of Bridgeport, indicated that Stephenson was shot in the lower leg.
Devlin said in his report that Stephenson has been charged with attempted first-degree assault and related charges in connection with the incident. Court records show he also faces misdemeanor charges of second-degree reckless endangerment and second-degree breach of peace in addition to the felony assault charge.
Stephenson is being held on a $100,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in Bridgeport Superior Court on June 11, records show.

SUNNY ISLES BEACH, Fla. (WFOR) - Police say they are alarmed by a cellphone video that shows a 10-year-old boy being choked and shaken by a man in a Florida park on Memorial Day.
The suspect has been identified as 60-year-old Robert Marcu. He is charged with aggravated child abuse with great bodily harm and battery by strangulation.
Video of the incident allegedly shows Marcu grabbing a 10-year-old boy by the neck and shaking him while at Gwen Margolis Park in Sunny Isles Beach. The boy’s head can be seen bobbing back and forth. His face has been blurred to protect his identity.
“The biggest concern here is that a grown man with the strength of a man went after a young child that was helpless and could not, based on size alone, defend himself,” said Sunny Isles Beach Police Sgt. Melissa Porro.
Police say the 10-year-old victim and another child, allegedly Marcu’s son, were playing with water guns when the boys started fighting, and Marcu intervened.
“It was at this time that that individual approached one of the children involved in that little child’s play fight … and began to violently choke this child, pretty much scare this child to the point that he was crying hysterically and very upset,” Porro said.
The arrest report says Marcu grabbed the victim by the neck, impeding his breathing, restricting his airway and shaking him around while still gripping his neck. The report also states that Marcu said, “I know what I did, and I did it to teach him a lesson.”

Lakeland police officers responded to a call at Caroline Apartments' pool on Memorial Day about non-residents using the pool.
The apartment manager told police to trespass anyone not living there.
The 16-year-old didn't provide his apartment number or identify himself, leading to a verbal trespass from the property.
According to the report, he left the pool to get his belongings.
Officers asked him to leave again; he allegedly put his hand in an officer's face and "tensed his body" when an officer grabbed his arm and tried to pull away.
The San Antonio Police Department released bodycam video Wednesday from a deadly shooting that took place during a Fiesta event April 28.
The shooting took place in the 100 block of Concho Alley during the Fiesta event Fiesta de los Reyes.
While officers were working their post near the stage, SAPD said a suspect, now identified as 20-year-old Albert Cisneros, shot toward another suspect, identified as Mikey Valdez, in the middle of the large crowd.
The bodycam footage then shows Valdez holding a gun as he went toward the direction of Cisneros after the first shots were fired.
Police saw Valdez and began to chase him and Cisneros down Concho Alley.
Shortly after the chase began, two more shots can be heard, and SAPD said they believe those were shots from Valdez shooting Cisneros.
A sergeant and officer then proceeded to shoot Valdez, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Cisneros later died after being taken to a hospital.
Two other bystanders reportedly were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, and two others were treated at the scene.
SAPD said that the sergeant involved was also struck with debris.

“They made us take LGBTQ training, and a lot of their training focused on medical intervention, and one training actually alludes to the fact that sometimes it's better to intervene medically earlier rather than later.”
“And so a few days later, the licensor sent me an email saying that she spoke to her supervisor and because I would not foster a transgender child or discuss they/them pronouns with my son, that they were going to have to pull our license."
"And we’re essentially being told that we're not fit to do that because of our beliefs, basically DCF's beliefs on gender ideology. And their beliefs, in my thought process, is not even really based in fact, it's just their opinion. And because of that, they're not allowing us to foster children, and there's a lot of children out there that need a home."
