Winter is coming, and that means winter diving. This vid is a light review of what cold diving means for different people, exposure protection (wet vs. dry), and cold-water weighting.

For warmth between cold dives, try the Surf-fur Waterparka

Are you a winter diver? Why, what do you like to see? What is your cold-water strategy?

Underwater Vortex from Hell? Socorro
This video was sent to me by a channel viewer for feedback. Divers stuck and struggling in an underwater vortex. If this video is genuine, I’ve never seen a more hellish underwater current pattern. The whole event takes place off the west coast of Mexico, near the island of Socorro, a spectacular dive area featuring every bucket list creature I can think of.

Today we have a chat with Michael Gerken, running dive/photo tours in Chuuk (aka Truk) Lagoon Micronesia and also the Sand Tiger Shark Wrecks North Carolina. He is one of the best photographers in his genre that I’ve ever seen. He talks about Chuuk, diving, photography, and COVID downtime. Chuuk background: Feb 1944, this was the largest air attack ever. Often known as the Japanese Pearl Harbor, scores of Japanese ships were sunk in the allied attack on this fortification. The consequences of the attack made "Truk lagoon the biggest graveyard of ships in the world". This is a must-dive location.

Scuba Diver Out of Air and Emergency Ascent - Catastrophic Buddy failure
This event was sent to me by Louise R, an out of air emergency from 2017. Two divers on a working dive, one runs low on air and cannot communicate this to the more experienced diver. Shortly after this miscommunication, the diver runs out of air totally, loses his buoyancy and is unable to reach the unaware buddy for an air share. The only option left for this out of air diver is an emergency ascent to the surface (from 13m), which he does successfully with no lasting injuries or effects.

Original video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=43LHQN3ijrw
Background information from the original video description:
The water temperature was 3C / 37.4F, this was during winter and in salt water. The diver shown in the video was in a sidemount configuration with two 12 liter / 85 cuft tanks while his buddy who ran out of gas used a single 12 liter / 75 cuft tank (85cf?). The purpose of the dive was underwater work, more specifically running a line from shore to several underwater items that were marked for removal. The diver who took the video did not participate in the work portion but tagged along to take video. The average depth was around 13.5 m / 44 ft and the total dive time just over 50 minutes. Gas mismanagement by the OOA diver was the leading cause of the accident. He simply breathed his single tank dry. The attempt to signal the upcoming OOA is shown in the video, the actual signs are not visible. After getting his buddy's attention by grabbing the fins, the OOA diver moved a hand to touch his neck seal. After a delay, he touched his second stage regulator. All movements were extremely slow and as a result, the buddy thought the diver was just cold, plus maybe re-seating the second stage in his mouth. He clearly did not understand and made that very clear. While the communication between the two divers was going on (and failing), the diver ran out of gas. Losing his buoyancy and being abov..

HammerTime Japan – How to Hammerhead Shark Dive in Japan
Of all the places to see Schooling Hammerheads in the world, I feel lucky to have 3 hammerhead viewing locations here in Japan: Yonaguni Island, Oshima Island, and Mikomoto Island. One of them, Mikomoto Island, is just 3 hours from Tokyo and is going absolutely bonkers right now with Scalloped hammerhead sharks. The Kuroshio (black current or warm current) has come to Japan early (again) this year, bringing the hammerhead sharks earlier and in higher numbers.

In this video, we learn a bit about the scalloped hammer, where to see them in Japan, some dive logistics, and lots of videos from recent dives. Let’s have a look.

On Nov of 2020, and 18-year-old Linnea Rose Mills dive on a freshwater dive at Lake McDonald, Glacier National Park, Montana. A $12M filed by the family alleges that the Gull Dive Center was negligent in not providing Linnea with proper dry suit instruction, and inflator hose, proper briefing, and supervision, and she was fatally overweighed with non-ditchable weight. The suit alleges that the end result was that Linnea was fatally squeezed at depth and unable to breathe nor return to the surface due to suit restrictions and being overweight beyond the capacity of the BC. The legal filing and other news reports also allege that there are other questions regarding the instructor's ability to teach drysuit, lack of emergency procedures, and the PADI teaching status of the Gull dive center. PADI is also named in the drysuit.

Neither the Mills Family nor their representative has expressed objections to the materials presented here, which also contains some of their input. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Milles family, Please consider donating, as I have, to the Linnea Foundation, a link that was provided by her mom:

9+ Hours of Relaxation Music & Slide Show for Ocean Lovers - Whales, Dolphin & Seal Sounds
Dark Screen Version - For those who want to avoid light pollution at night
This was major work! There are nine creatures (list below). Some surprises for me...many creature sounds are not relaxing at all, so I passed on those. Blue whale sounds are so low frequency, many recordings can hardly be heard without amplification. Last, bearded seals sound almost like a UFO.

With all the relaxation and meditation videos on YouTube, it's been my goal to make one for ocean-lovers. After screening literally hundreds of sounds, I quickly found that not all ocean voices are as relaxing as others, so I chose what I thought was the most relaxing, comparatively. Rendering time was another challenge. I tried to have a long video made to order on Fiverr, but no one would do it due to the long rendering time. My goal was to make an 8-10 hour video, which would take 1- 3 days to render on my main (slow) computer, but I lucked into a spare computer that would be doing nothing but that task and only took several hours. And here we are.

Anyway, another labor of love for the fans of the channel. I hope the video brings you many good hours of BGM for relaxing, sleeping, study or work. I hope the music and ocean sounds are even more drowse-inducing than my speaking voice ;)

9+ Hours of Relaxation Music & Slide Show for Ocean Lovers - Whales, Dolphin & Seal Sounds
Educational - The music and sounds are set to a slide show that displays the creature that made the current or most recent sound. Once a new creature sound is played, the new creature will display in the slide show. This was major work! There are nine creatures (list below). Some surprises for me...many creature sounds are not relaxing at all, so I passed on those. Blue whale sounds are so low frequency, many recordings can hardly be heard without amplification. Last, bearded seals sound almost like a UFO.

The Day I Cheated Death (Scuba Dive Incident at Moose Mountain Quarry, Ontario)
Posted June 2018, https://youtu.be/R-Byn4Io5s8, Water Temp 41F

Summary:
An uncertified diver posted this event back in June 2018, which occurred at Moose Mountain Quarry, Ontario. It’s hard to tell exactly what’s going on from the video alone, but the video description and comments by the OP since they are both illuminating and confusing at the same time. The OP is a certified diver now. I’m not sure if the panic was caused by N2/CO2 narcosis, over-breathing the reg, or? I’d be happy to hear some observations and opinions. Original video description and key comments by OP included below.

Video Description from the Original Video Poster:
“I'm an idiot, this was my 2nd ever dive (and) WITHOUT certification, I had been breathing incorrectly in some dumb attempt to conserve on air and panicked at 100ft when I was unable to suck in air from my reg which caused me to shallow hyperventilate, so because I couldn't breathe and my partner was already ascending above me. I made an emergency ascent (not even correctly) to the surface, causing my lungs to expand and throw up basically nitrogen upon surfacing. Later Symptoms included a minor headache, Dizziness, Muscle cramps, Chest pain and Ringing in the ears.

Two weeks after this incident. There was another experienced diver who died at the same location in 60 feet of water as he experienced something similar to me.

Before you get too eager and decide to be a condescending ass hat in the comment section. I have been certified and am currently an advanced diver with a solid number of dives under my belt including deep dives. I understand what happened during this dive, opposed to my definition in video which was again still before I had any training, so not need to attempt to give me some personal explanation of what I should have done or what happened. You weren't there that day.”

Nemo Blu3 Electric Hookah Device - Have you seen this?
This new hookah unit caught my eye; the Nemo Blu3 battery-operated device. The unit has a hose meant to be used down to a limit of 10ft or 3 meters and a battery duration of 60 minutes. There are quite a few YouTubers using them out there for lost item recovery, light salvage, and fossil hunting. The unit is not cheap (starts at $999) but has definite use for shallow water applications.

While going down this rabbit hole, I also ran into a muscle-powered hookah device, the Exolung, which I also put in this video.

Scuba Diver Panic from 15 meters - Scuba Diving Incident Analysis
This video was sent to me by a subscriber (thanks, Tammy). I’d seen the thumbnail before, but never the video. According to the info I could find, this incident occurred near Cape Town, South Africa in January 2015. Right at the end of a dive, a woman is suffering from some unknown distress and subsequently rejects her regulator and mask and bolts to the surface from 15 meters. The dive with the camera (the diver filming says that he or she is not an instructor) takes control of the diver to keep her from bolting to the surface and tries repeatedly to stuff his spare secondary regulator into her mouth. Due to the bubbles and struggle, it’s hard for me to see if he was successful in getting her to accept the regulator or not. There were no catastrophic/lasting injuries from this event that I can find.

Big Q to folks out there...what is your experience with trying to force a reg into a bolting diver's mouth?

Marine Biologist Reacts to Shark Movies - Melissa Cristina Márquez
Marine biologist and "shark girl" Melissa Cristina Márquez reacts to pop culture shark films, bringing her significant shark knowledge and experience to bear. Meanwhile, the Big Dog himself, Jim the Scuba Instructor, reacts to her review. We follow her remarks through four classic shark movies: The Meg, Laura Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life, Jaws, and Deep Blue Sea.

Just a bit of a laugh, all in good fun. Thanks for proving some interesting and informative source material and being a good sport.

Sorry for the thumbnail, Melissa, I couldn't resist ;)

Cozumel Weight Belt Loss on Deep Dive – Scuba Diving Incident Analysis
On a beautiful wall dive in Cozumel, two divers and a guide enjoy high visibility with spectacular hard and soft corals. One diver apparently did not secure his weight belt properly or the buckle failed, and around the middle of the dive, at 30 meters/100 feet, the belt falls off, causing the dive to lose buoyancy dangerously fast towards the surface. While the diver does little himself to remedy the situation, an alert dive leader comes to the rescue, catching the diver and giving him some ballast for the remainder of the dive.

Kudos to this diver, Bryon, for posting this video for us to learn from.

WTF...Barry the MBU Puffer
We all see lots of viral cat and dog videos all over Social Media. I may have just found the aquatic version. Meet Barry the Puffer. I’ve never seen a fish so responsive to the world outside his or her tanks. Check this out!

The MBU puffer, AKA giant puffer or giant freshwater puffer, is one of 30 freshwater species of puffer and native to Cameroon, Zambia, Tanzania, Burundi, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, specifically the east coast of Lake Tanganyika close to the mouth of the Malagarasi River and the mid to lower sections of the Congo River.

https://www.aquariadise.com/mbu-puffer/
They grow to an adult length of 67 cm (26 inches). Like all of its relatives, the Mbu puffer is capable of inflating itself with water or air when stressed or otherwise frightened. It feeds on smaller fish, mollusks and crustaceans, and snails. Species kept in captivity require a varied diet consisting of shelled foods to help ensure good health and to prevent tooth overgrowth.

The Mbu puffer is just about the most aggressive tetraodon that you can find. However, these fish do learn to recognize and interact well with their owners. If an owner does decide to risk introducing tankmates with the puffers, you will need a massive tank, and the species you choose to share the environment must be sufficiently fast and agile to be able to outswim the puffer.
