Peter Noone was just 16 when this massive hit was released by Herman’s Hermits in August 1964 (UK - September 64, US). I’m slightly older than that, but age is just a number isn’t it! So here is a great number 1 record from 1964. Written by the genius duo of Carol King and Gerry Goffin, it’s an all time classic!

Alf and Sid are totally disillusioned with the political parties and the leaders putting themselves up for people’s votes in the forthcoming UK general election - they wonder whether it is even worth voting. No song better conjures up the memories of the hot summer of 1975 for me than this classic from Andy Kim. It has to be one of the ultimate feel good songs. For me it brings back the days of a 20 year old racing around the country in his red Ford Cortina Mark 3 with this song blasting out on the car stereo!

The Troggs provided a unique and raw sound to the 1960s - some say they were the pre-punk, punk band. From rockers like this song from 1967 and “Wild Thing” they also came out with an all time classic balled “Love Is All Around”. Definitely amongst my favourite 1960s bands!

In May 1966 this fabulous song went to Number 1 in the UK for Manfred Mann. It was one of my favourite hits of that year. 58 years later, here is my cover version! It is the 3rd Manfred Man cover I’ve made so far (see our Do Wah Diddy Diddy and If You Gotta Go, Go Now videos) - there are sure to be more….

This is my second cover from Yusuf’s excellent 1971 album Teaser and The Firecat, which was one of my most played albums as a teenager. Moonshadow is one of the first songs I taught myself to play on guitar, so brings back many happy memories.

This big ballad was a huge hit for The Fortunes on both sides of the Atlantic in 1965. The original record featured a big orchestral arrangement. Not having a tame orchestra to hand, I decided to arrange it for a 5 piece band with guitars, keyboard, bass and drums so this is very much a stripped down version compared to the amazing original!

This was The Herd’s 3rd chart single, released in March 1968. Although all 3 songs were written by Howard and Blaikley, I Don’t Want Our Loving To Die marked a major change in style for the band from the epic orchestra backed singles of 1967. Peter Frampton described the style as “rock/ska” and I have attempted to bring that out in this version. See also my cover of The Herd’s first hit “From The Underworld” on this channel. Oh, and that’s my Grandfather’s Meerschaum pipe I’m holding in the opening verse - it was his 50th birthday present back in April 1960!

I used to play this when I was with a rock band playing the pubs and clubs of the English Midlands with my brother back in the 80's. It was always a crowd pleaser. It was an amazingly powerful song for 1958 when Eddie Cochran released it and there is some great footage here on YouTube of him performing it at the time. A true classic!

Paul McCartney wrote this song in 1969 and recorded a version of it where he played all of the instruments. He ended up passing the song over to a new band called The Iveys who were to become Badfinger, a highly talented but ill-fated band. "Come and Get It" went on to be a big hit for Badfinger in UK and US as well as elsewhere at the turn of the 60s into the 70s. I remember absolutely loving it!

This song is one of my earliest musical memories - I was 3 years old when it was released. I can remember my Uncle Jon and his then girlfriend Maureen playing it. Richie Valens scored a big US hit with this song in 1958. It was covered in the UK by Marty Wilde in 1959 and was a hit here too. It has been covered numerous times by a number of artists. The versions are all quite different with each artist putting their own identity onto the perfromance.
