One method to quickly do mental math, is to compensate one addend with an amount from another addend to make compatible numbers. We break-apart an addend to give a small amount to another addend. Remember the Associative Property of Addition states that we can group addends in any order and we will get the same sum.
Example:
19 + 6 =
19 + (1 + 5) =
(19 + 1) + 5 =
20 + 5 = 25
