A former Baltimore County teacher says parents are being lied to concerning their kid’s safety in public schools.

After spending 33 years teaching in Baltimore County classrooms, Ed Kitlowski is now running for County School Board. He’s frustrated, because during his career, he saw how student discipline has changed and the effects it had.

“The lie is that what we're doing is working,” says Kitlowski, who states parents are being lied to.

Kitlowski says No Child Left Behind, passed in 2001, drastically changed public education because it shifted the focus to data. For example, Project Baltimore investigated suspension rates. We found in-school and out-of-school suspensions, statewide, have plummeted 58 percent since 2007. Kitlowski says student behavior didn’t improve, the discipline just stopped because principals wanted their school’s data to look better.

“One school I was at, the principal made a policy of not suspending students. Didn't broadcast that to the student body, but after a while the students start to see. Well, so and so did this really bad behavior, and nothing happened to him. I'm gonna see what I can do,” says Kitlowski.

He recalls a time, 25 years ago, when a student called him a “stupid jerk.” He still has the paperwork showing the kid was reprimanded, and his parents were called to the school for a meeting. Towards the end of his career, Kitlowski says a student brought a knife to class. The weapon was taken, but the student was not disciplined.

fter he says he was kicked, punched and sworn at during the latter part of his career, Kitlowski retired in 2016. Now, as a school board candidate, he says it’s time to shift the focus from data back to students and tell parents what’s really happening inside their kid’s school.

“Teachers aren't trained to deal with a lot of the discipline problems they're seeing,” he says. “I find that there's a lack of transparency about what's happening, and Project Baltimore seemed to be looking at that and bringing some transparency.”

While appearing on an episode of “Red Table Talk,” Pinkett Smith said she has found herself prejudging women based on race, and once thought “twice” about doing an interview because the interviewer was a white woman with blonde hair.

“I have to admit I’m guilty to that to a certain degree because I do have my own biases, specifically to blonde women,” Pinkett Smith said.

“Blonde hair on white women just triggers me,” said the 47-year-old who is married to actor Will Smith. “I’ve had to catch myself.”

Ironically enough, her comments came in response to a discussion on racial divides in America.

And, rather than speak about ideas to bring more people together, the actress instead made incredibly divisive and racial comments about white women.

A social media post detailing a "savage attack" on a cyclist by three men has sparked outrage from Bellevue-area residents who said they were not told about it by police

New Castle County police handled the incident and said they responded to the robbery, but said the robbery wasn't as bad as the post described.

Police said what actually happened was far less violent. One of the perpetrators struck the victim in the face with something, causing him to fall off the bike. Hitting the ground injured his hand, police said.

One of the perpetrators got on the bike and rode off, and the other two walked away. Police described the robbers as black teenagers in dark clothing.

The message posted on a Nextdoor neighborhood site said the cyclist was riding Sunday morning from Wilmington to Bellevue Park on the Northern Delaware Greenway Trail. He was near the Shipley Road crossing when he was "savagely attacked" by three African-American men, the post said.

The men beat his face and head with a rock and stole his bike, the post said.

Nancy Beury, a resident of the area, said she was upset police hadn't released information on the incident. People who use the trail should know whether it is safe, she said.

Chicago: Police said a man who was found unresponsive on the Wellington Brown Line station platform early Saturday had been robbed by a group of people as he waited for a train. No one is in custody.

The victim later told officers that a group of people approached him on the platform and punched him, causing him to fall down and rendering him unconscious. The offenders took the victim’s valuables and left the area before police arrived, authorities said.

The six victims were standing on the southeast corner of 12th and Huntingdon streets around 9:50 p.m. when a gray or silver minivan drove by. At least one gunman inside the van then fired at least 11 shots before the vehicle fled the scene.

"From the evidence out here it appears to be a large caliber weapon, possibly a high-powered rifle," Philadelphia Police Commissioner Richard Ross said.

The teenager who was shot by cops after he opened fire on a Far Rockaway crowd was hit with attempted murder charges Saturday, authorities said.

The 15-year-old, identified by sources as Rashid Zahid-Abeurra, allegedly sent bullets flying into a group of people after a fight at a house party spilled onto the street near the intersection of Redfern Avenue and Nameoke Avenue at about 11 p.m., cops said.

About 30 minutes later, a 15-year-old boy with a gun began firing into that crowd. Police said they asked the teen to drop the gun, and then police opened fire, striking the teenager several times.

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Not knowing they were being recorded, two men wearing gloves broke into a home in the Graduate Hospital section of Philadelphia in the middle of the day Tuesday.

"They climbed through the window, stepped into the sink, came in and went through our house," said Michael Raphael.

They carefully cased the row home floor by floor. The 14-minute home surveillance video shows the pair making off with electronics, cash and some jewelry.

"It's just the fact we could see them walking around the house, chatting and talking, being oddly careful," said Raphael. "It's invasive. It feels awful."

Residents say that Tuesday's midday burglary is not the first on what is normally considered a safe block.

Theresa Pearsall's home surveillance caught someone stealing items from outside her front door the night before. A block away, a church was also hit.

PHILADELPHIA (WTXF) - A mother wants to know why after she says her son was beat up at MLK High School. The 15-year-old's jaw was broken and had to be wired shut. Police say he may be a victim of the 'Knockout Game'.

"This is his diet for the next 30 to 60 days," his mother said. A protein milkshake is all that Niquan Martin will eat for the foreseeable future. The 15-year-old’s jaw is broken in three places and wired shut after being attacked in the hallway at Martin Luther King High School Friday afternoon.

"Someone came and blindsided him—hit him. He aint’ even know what hit him,” his mother, Nicole Brooks, said.

Niquan’s mother says the attack on her son—who is in special education program—was unprovoked. Police say it may be a case of the 'Knockout Game'.

A Christian missionary and father-of-four from China was fatally shot while visiting Missouri, just two days after he arrived in the US.

Xindong Hao was shot to death by 18-year-old Curtail Hudson, who was high on PCP and randomly shooting at people in the area on Wednesday, cops say.

In his high rampage Hudson got into a fight with a man and launched a shooting spree for two blocks around 7pm, fatally shooting Hao as he was walked by.

Witnesses said that Hudson shot Hao in the side then hit him several times with the butt of his shotgun.

Two other people were also wounded in Hudson's mad shooting spree, before he was arrested, including the man he fought with who suffered wounds in his neck and back.

A short video of the hit-and-run was posted on Twitter on July 31 by joelil, who said that “three black teenagers” ran over the Asian woman’s leg and drove off with her purse on Alvarado-Niles Road.

Another witness posted on Instagram that the Asian woman was blocking the car that the suspects were in and yelling “I need to call the cops.”

The woman said the teenagers were acting “crazy” and the brand new car they drove off with may have belonged to her as well.

MANHATTAN (WABC) -- Police are searching for a suspect who shoved a man onto the subway train tracks inside Grand Central Terminal Monday afternoon.

The victim was standing on the platform waiting for the 6 train around 4 p.m. when another man believed to be in his late 20s shoved him onto the tracks.

Authorities say it happened after the 47-year-old victim had inadvertently bumped into the suspect as he was walking up the stairs to the platform.

"I don't understand how these people, they wanna kill, you know," said the victim, Dai Kang.

"He watched me, and I'm scared, and he said 'do you want to die?' I said I don't want to see your face, get out of here. I turned my back," he said. That turned out to be a mistake. The man pushed Kang onto the tracks.
