Changing things up and going big this week with a look at Takom's 1/72nd scale HMS Hood turret kit.

So this is not something that i normally do but I wanted to share a brand of paint that I decided to give a try. Have seen this at my local game store for a while now and during a recent trip I needed to spend a little more in order to meet the minimum for credit purchase so I finally decided to give these paints a test. For testing purposes I chose to use Bubblegum Crisis, a pink-gold color shift paint.

For all of the test spoons I started with a primer coat of Mr. Surfacer 1500 White. For one of the spoons I then did a base coat of Mr. Color pink (C63) to see how it would work with a similar color base. While trying to find my bottle of Pink I found my bottle of Mr. Color Florescent Pink (C174) and decided to also do a spoon with this as a base coat.

Now when I airbrushed the first coat I messed up. As there is no included thinning recipe, and because this paint is very thick, I used a combination of Vallejo Airbrush Flow Improver and Thinner. This resulted in the paint being overly thin. Was able to get an ok first coat down but it was far from good. For the second coat I used only the Flow Improver and that did the trick. Had I done I third coat it would have fully fixed the first coat but for the purpose of this testing the two coats would be more than enough. The spoons were allowed to sit overnight and then a little extra. One spoon was then overcoated with SMS Super Gloss, spoon 1. The next spoon was coated with Mr. Color UV Cut Gloss, spoon 2. The rest were coated with Alclad Aqua Gloss Clear, spoons 3-5.

Spoon 1
Was a little concerned applying the SMS as Turbo Dork's instructions say not to top coat with solvent base paints. However, I can find no issue with how it turned out. My guess is that given how thin the layer of paint is when airbrushing it is able to fully set up. Would be interested to see how it reacts when applied over a brush painted sample. Handling the sample I found no issues and no paint coming off.
