Piano Sonata No. 2 in F major, K. 280 / 189e by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

Mozart completed this sonata in 1774 at the age of 18. It is one of six piano sonatas that Mozart completed during a four month visit to Munich with his father from December 1774 to March of 1775. The purpose of this visit was to seek alternative employment for the young Mozart, as his position as court musician within the court of Prince-Archbishop Hieronymus Colloredo was neither profitable or pleasant.

While the visit to Munich did not result in a new position for Mozart, it did result in the successful production of the opera ‘La Finta giardiniera’ (“The Pretend Garden-Girl”). It is remarkable that Mozart was able to compose an entire opera, as well as six piano sonatas all while making a tour of Munich from his home city of Salzburg.
