Ludicrous has just been redefined. New York City Mayor Eric Adams has proposed that the city should hire illegal aliens as lifeguards, citing their swimming proficiency. Adams made this controversial remark during a Tuesday press conference addressing lifeguard staffing shortages at NYC public pools and beaches.
"How do we have a large body of people that are in our city, our country, that are excellent swimmers and at the same time we need lifeguards—and the only obstacle is that we won’t give them the right to work to become a lifeguard?” Adams stated.
This comment is part of Adams' ongoing campaign to expedite work permits for migrants to address labor shortages. However, it has drawn criticism due to the perilous journeys many migrants undertake to reach New York City. Hundreds cross the Rio Grande daily, with an estimated 2,700 having died in nearly three decades, according to Texas Monthly. These deaths are not officially tracked by any U.S. agency.
Illegals currently face a 60-day shelter limit for families and 30 days for individuals. They must wait six months after applying for asylum before they can obtain a work permit. Adams argued that a plan to expedite work permits for critical job shortages could alleviate these issues. "If there was a shortage of food service workers and those who fit that criteria, we’re going to expedite you,” he said. “If you have experience as a nurse and we have a nursing shortage, we would expedite you."
Adams' comments come amid reports from the New York Police Department of a "wave of migrant crime," which has fueled Republican calls for stricter immigration policies. These remarks have also created tension between Adams and the Biden Administration, whose support he needs.

New York City police intervened to prevent a mob in Harlem from attacking Shaquan Cummings, a 30-year-old man accused of a violent attack on an 11-year-old girl. The incident occurred Friday afternoon on the 116th Street 6 subway platform, where Cummings is alleged to have slashed the girl in the head and ear as she stood next to her mother. Prior to this assault, Cummings reportedly punched a 43-year-old woman nearby.
The young victim, feeling a sharp pain, turned to find Cummings fleeing with a box cutter. Despite her mother's attempts to stop him, including flagging down a subway conductor, Cummings escaped. The attack left the girl severely traumatized, now afraid to venture outside, and requiring surgery to repair the wounds, which included multiple stitches and staples.
The incident led to an outpour of public outrage. A mob formed, seeking to confront Cummings, who was quickly apprehended by the police just a block away from where he initially fled. In a dramatic scene captured on video and shared on social media, police shielded Cummings from the angry crowd, some of whom attempted to strike him.
This attack is one of several violent offenses attributed to Cummings, who has a lengthy criminal history including over 20 prior arrests. His recent activities have reignited concerns over public safety and the effectiveness of the city's measures to manage repeat offenders.
Cummings was charged with two counts of assault and acting in a manner injurious to a child. The NYPD has since recovered the weapon involved, a box cutter, from the uptown train tracks. The community and the victim's family now await justice, hoping for a safer environment where such violent acts are a rarity rather than a recurring nightmare.

Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani has been terminated from his daily show on WABC radio, a decision he attributes to the station’s desire to appease President Joe Biden, whom he derisively called a "trailer trash little creep." Giuliani accused the station's owner, John Catsimatidis, of hypocrisy, claiming Catsimatidis suppresses free speech while purporting to support it, particularly regarding Giuliani’s claims about the 2020 presidential election being stolen.
Giuliani expressed his outrage on his "America’s Mayor Live" show on X, accusing Catsimatidis of creating a significant breach in First Amendment rights by restricting discussion on the 2020 election. Giuliani argued this restriction contradicts the station’s alleged commitment to free speech.
Earlier, Giuliani was removed from “The Rudy Giuliani Show” for allegedly breaching a station policy against asserting the 2020 election was illegitimate.
