Olivia is the digital communications mode on shortwave (high frequency sub band, or, HF) for amateur radio operators who want more than the "Check Propagation" FT8 mode. This video is an introduction that was presented to the Raleigh Amateur Radio Society ( https://www.rars.org/ ) on December 12, 2023. Presented by Tomas Hood, NW7US

https://youtu.be/kds4RCQQ8a0

Olivia information can be found, here:
https://OliviaDigitalMode.org

Olivia, a Multi-Frequency Shift Keying (MFSK) radioteletype digital mode, is an amateur radioteletype protocol designed to work in difficult (low signal-to-noise ratio plus multipath) propagation conditions on shortwave radio (i.e., high-frequency, or HF) bands. The typical Olivia signal is decoded when the amplitude of the noise is over ten times that of the digital signal! It is commonly used by amateur radio operators to reliably transmit ASCII characters over noisy channels (slices of high-frequency spectrum -- i.e., frequencies from 3 MHz to 30 MHz; HF) exhibiting significant fading and propagation phasing.

The Olivia digital modes are commonly referred to by the number of tones and the bandwidth used (in Hz). Therefore, it is common to express the Olivia digital mode as Olivia X/Y (or, alternatively, Olivia Y/X ), where X refers to the number of different audio tones transmitted, and Y refers to the bandwidth in Hertz over which these signals are spread. Examples of common Olivia modes are, 8/250 (meaning, 8 tones/250-Hertz bandwidth), 16/500, and, 32/1000.

The protocol was developed at the end of 2003 by Pawel Jalocha. The first on-the-air tests were performed by two radio amateurs, Fred OH/DK4ZC and Les VK2DSG, on the Europe-Australia propagation path in the 20-meter shortwave radio amateur band. The tests proved that the Olivia protocol (or, digital mode) works well and can allow regular intercontinental radio contacts with as little as one-watt RF power (when propagation is highly-favorable). Since 2005, Olivia has become ..

Yeah - It ain't dead, dude! Morse code is still very much an art and a language in common use, every day of the year, all around the world.

This video explains the way IBEX will create a global map of the boundaries of our solar system. The two Voyager spacecraft launched in the 1970s gave data for two points on the map, but by using energetic neutral atoms, IBEX images the entire global structure of these interstellar boundaries

This video is a capture of analog television signals by radio amateur operator, XE1FAS ( https://www.qrz.com/db/xe1fas ), in Puebla, Mexico (Grid Square EK09). XE1FAS is the call sign of Segura Walls Alejandro. He was receiving these signals from Columbian television channel 4 broadcasts on VHF, via Sporadic-E ionospheric propagation. He was using a three-element XQ Quad antenna (a type of beam antenna). That's quite the distance for a VHF television signal!

-On Mar. 6, 2019, SDO observed a long lunar transit - with a twist. The shadow of the Moon in SDO's images first touched the limb of the Sun at 2200 UTC (5pm EST) on Mar. 6, making its way across and finally left the solar disk at 0209 UTC on Mar. 7 (9:09 pm EST, Mar. 6). The moon's apparent reversal is caused by SDO first overtaking the moon in its orbit, then the moon catching up as SDO swings around Earth's dusk side. During the transit the Sun moves in the frame as the telescopes cool and flex in the lunar shadow.ÊNote that the edge of the Moon is very sharp because it has no atmosphere. Credit: Solar Dynamics Observatory, NASA. This is the last Picture of the Week produced by Steele Hill. We would like to thank Steele for 9 years of SDO POTWs! He also selects POTWs for SoHO and STEREO. With 23 and 13 years on-orbit, that means Steele has picked over 2000 POTWs! Thanks for looking at all those beautiful images and finding a favorite almost every week!

The darker area at the center on the Earth-facing solar disc is a coronal hole--an area of weaker magnetic structure--from where faster solar wind is ejected out toward the Earth. The result? The faster solar wind interacts with the Earth's magnetosphere, creating geomagnetic activity including geomagnetic storms. Such storms degrade shortwave radio propagation.

This image (Oct. 31-Nov.2, 2018) reveals the coronal hole as it appears darker in this wavelength of extreme ultraviolet light--193 Angstroms. If these particles impact Earth's magnetosphere, they will likely generate aurora near the Earth's poles regions.

At the Pinnacle Arena in Lincoln, Nebraska, on 21 November 2018, four bands rocked the house: Ashes to New, Bad Wolves, Five Finger Death Punch, and Breaking Benjamin. I thought Five Finger Death Punch was the top performance! This is just a sampling of the light show work, as the audio is crap when you use a cell phone to record hard rock played at a very high volume!

Just signed the closing documents and now own a home in Lincoln, Nebraska. Moving now from Omaha. Here's a quick view of the four-season room, and then the back yard. Notice the natural antenna supports. Wire antennae might work, here.

In any case, I'm very happy with this property. More, to come, about this new QTH.

This move is from Omaha to Lincoln, Nebraska. No more two hours of commute time each day. No more excessive wear on my vehicle. Better area for my radio antenna farm. A room I am dedicating to video creation and production. Etc.

I'm happy!

What is the proper (and most efficient) technique for creating Morse code by hand, using a manual Morse code key? Ham radio operators find Morse code (and the 'CW' mode, or 'Continuous Wave' keying mode) very useful, even though Morse code is no longer required as part of the licensing process. Morse code is highly effective in weak-signal radio work. And, preppers love Morse code because it is the most efficient way to communicate when there is a major disaster that could wipe out the communications infrastructure.

While this military film is antique, the vintage information is timeless, as the material is applicable to Morse code, even today.

More about Morse code, at my website: http://cw.hfradio.org

In this video, I briefly introduce some of the type of signals I hear on my high-frequency (shortwave) amateur radio. Some of them are voice transmissions, and some are data. This video is simply the initial teaser for many videos to come. And, it served as an experiment in my editing two video sources and a third audio source, using Adobe Premier CC 2014 software.
