The political reforms were already coming, so the old claim that Eureka had a hand in shaping Australian democracy is patently false. But there must be a reason that I'm visiting Peter Lalor's grave (aside from him being the Speaker in the 1880s. Is there a reason? I go into more depth in my post "The Eureka Stockade: Legacy".

Terrible things have happened in the past and there is a lot of moral debt to absolve and apologise for. But we must avoid the "Medieval Soldier" trap - you will be the Medieval Soldier one day. We must also never invalidate our existence by apologising for what we are the product of. You cannot feel guilty for your existence, nor do you have the authority to make others feel undeserving of their existence. I don't know how we can atone for the past, but dehumanisation is never the answer.

Just some brief thoughts about feminist perspectives on history and how, regardless of noble intentions, these viewpoints often miss the mark and ironically disempower women. It appears to be more about stripping women of agency (and then ascribing it all to men) in order to fulfil a political agenda, at the cost of historical accuracy and it muddies the waters. Just some thoughts floating around in my head, nothing so concretely formulated yet.

Just some preliminary thoughts about how to condemn the past, the danger of condemning it too readily and its twin danger of not condemning it soon enough.

I talk about Picnic at Hanging Rock and the secret chapter that ruined the entire story and from there make a point about filling in the inevitable gaps in the historical record. By all means, investigate and try to uncover the facts, but don't stuff the gaps with conjecture. It's so tempting and we've all fell victim to it, but you'll just end up muddying the waters and your historical interpretation will resemble Restored Jesus.

I passed a Buddhist temple on the way to Mt. Buninyong and started thinking about mountains (not) being mountains, then I thought of the past and how its impermanent, then of revisionism in history and how that term is a pejorative now, then finally how we can use the impermanence of history to our advantage. I'm in a toilet block to avoid the rain, because that too was not forever.
