Two of Clarendon’s most wanted men, 25-year-old Leon Rose, otherwise called ‘Hitler’, and 24-year-old Zemmar Nelson, known as ‘Terminator Boy’, have so far been identified among the six men who were shot and killed by members of the security forces in Effortville, May Pen, Clarendon on Sunday morning.

The men were cut down during a joint police/military operation in the volatile community that involved a shootout which lasted for about an hour, law enforcement sources indicated.

Two Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) soldiers were also slightly injured in the operation.

Reports are that during the operation, law enforcement personnel came under heavy gunfire from gunmen in the community.

The security personnel returned the gunfire and six men were found suffering from gunshot wounds after the extended gun battle.

Three high-powered guns - an AK-47 assault rifle, an M16 assault rifle and a shotgun, along with ammunition – were seized when the shooting subsided.

Motorists are being advised to avoid Constant Spring Road in St Andrew heading towards West Kings House Road, as a section of the roadway at the intersection of Gore Terrace in the vicinity of CVM Television has been blocked off and reduced to single-lane traffic amid a police investigation..

Motorists are being advised to use the Red Hills Road exit as an alternative route, the police said in a release.

Members of the public are also being reminded to follow the directives of police personnel on the scene.

The development follows the shooting of two policemen who were on patrol in the area early on Thursday morning.

The two cops are now nursing gunshot wounds following a confrontation with two armed men.

Reports are that about 1.30 am, the police team was on patrol in the area when they observed a white Honda Civic motorcar parked on the roadway.

The team approached the vehicle to check on the situation, only to have two men inside the vehicle immediately open fire, hitting the lawmen, before attempting to flee the scene.

The injured officers returned the gunfire and the car subsequently crashed a short distance away.

One of the armed men ran from the vehicle and the driver, who was shot, was held.

All three persons were taken to hospital, where the unidentified man was pronounced dead while undergoing treatment.

The two police officers are currently being treated for their injuries.

Some 30 spent shells have reportedly been recovered from the scene by investigators who are currently probing the incident.

The shooting comes a little over seven weeks after four police officers were shot and injured in Horizon Park, St Catherine while on an operation.

Three of the officers, including a superintendent, later succumbed to their injuries in hospital.

The police are reporting that 21-year-old labourer Jason Harvey, otherwise called ‘Spread Out’, who is of a Farm Hill, St James address, has been charged after he shot and injured a man in his community.

Harvey was charged on Tuesday with illegal possession of firearm, wounding with intent and illegal possession of ammunition.

The police report that about 9:30 a.m. on Monday, February 10, Harvey allegedly pounced upon the complainant at his house and opened gunfire hitting him in the shoulder.

The injured man was taken to hospital where he was treated and released.

The matter was reported to the police and Harvey turned himself in to investigators on Friday, February 21.

An American visitor has become the latest murder victim in western Jamaica after his body, with multiple stab wounds, was found inside a hotel room in Montego Bay yesterday.

Investigators attached to the western city’s Freeport Police Station have identified the deceased man as Pheodore Walling, who is of a Michigan address in the United States. He was a guest at Hotel Gloriana, where his body was discovered.

The American’s death coincided with a strong defence of the country’s travel industry by US Ambassador Donald Tapia, who emphasised yesterday that Jamaica was a safe place for tourists.

Speaking at a Lions Club of Kingston meeting at The Jamaica Pegasus, Tapia argued that the impact of violent crime on the hospitality industry was negligible, though he acknowledged that he was constantly asked about murders.

“The place is safe. There are certain areas that are very bad, but overall, when you look at Jamaica is safe. They do not attack the tourists ... so they are not affecting tourism,” he said.

“… So (crime’s) one of the things we need to get off the front page and put on Page 18 or 16, not on the front page.”

Crime affects 0.1 per cent of tourists, the Ministry of Tourism has said.

However, Walling’s death has left Janet Silvera, the president of the Montego Bay Chamber of Commerce and Industry, quite concerned as with the tourism sector already facing worrying threats from the global coronavirus outbreak, this killing could further unsettle the sector.

“Jamaica is already fighting with the fallout as it relates to the coronavirus, so the death of a tourist is just more bad news,” said Silvera. “One would want to believe a visitor to the island would be safe … . In fact, 99 per cent of our visitors usually enjoy incident-free vacations.”

According to the police, Walling arrived on the island recently and was staying at the popular property, which is located along Godfrey Dyer Boulevard. It is unclear whether he was a business or leisure traveller.
