This THAI BOXING EXHIBITION took place at the annual 'THAI FEST' aka THAI CULTURAL DAY LOS ANGELES. The Thai Cultural Day is a festival that showcases a variety of Asian traditions. It takes place for a day, in September at Barnsdall Park, next to the Thai town in East Hollywood.
It's free, fun and lively with booths where they sell food, jewelry, clothes, books, art pieces, mostly from Thailand or created by Thai artists. They have various shows and demonstrations all through the day (sometimes inside the Theater at Barnsdall), beautiful dances, singers, food carving, and other types of performances. Introduction to TAI CHI CHUAN
Ever since the early 19th century, Yang Style Tai Chi Chuan has been practiced worldwide and continues to be the one of, if not the most, effective and brilliant forms of Chinese martial arts ever to be conceived. Taking the entire body into consideration, Tai Chi Chuan is a comprehensive practice that has been used across the world as exercise, medicine, meditation and self defense.

To understand Tai Chi Chuan*
Tai Chi Chuan as a healing art:
Firstly, Tai Chi is more internal activity instead of external body movement. It emphasizes working on Dan-Tian which is your abdominal or core area. The correct internal movement results in the internal organs deep massage that effectively cleanse your body.
Secondly, Tai Chi is a breathing activity. It is a deep breathing exercise that optimizes your lung capacity and oxygenates each cell of your body to keep it healthy. When you inhale, you feel as if you're breathing deep into your bones. When you exhale, you breathe out as if through your skin and hair.
Thirdly, it is a mental activity. Tai Chi is a moving meditation that puts your mind and body in perfect unison. You practice Tai Chi very slowly – the purpose of the slowness is to develop a keen awareness of your body and your movement. Qigong is a name given to a well-known set of breathing and meditation exercises in China. Tai Chi is an advanced Qigong exercise.

Tai Chi focuses on "two big bones areas" in practice:
The first is your pevic bone area that is Dantian (your core area slightly below the navel, the term means “life essence field” or “sea of qi”). Tai Chi is an internal exercise that focuses on this area as a type of deep internal massage – in traditional Chinese medicine and Tai Chi, the Dantian is the seat of one's life energy, and is considered the foundation of rooted standing, breathing, and body awareness, and is also crucial to health and wellbeing.
The second area is your spine. Tai Chi Chuan has specific techniques to work on your spine to keep it healthy and in good shape. One of the key techniques is to “open” your Mingmeng (the small of the back – the word means “life gate” in Chinese). Tai Chi Chuan practitioners train themselves to be their own chiropractors; if your spine is in good shape, you generally enjoy good health.

As a martial art:
Tai Chi Chuan is also a martial art focusing on mental strength and internal physical strength. It emphasizes being calm, alert, and relaxed.
Regarding physical strength, Tai Chi develops two basic martial abilities: one is “rooting,” the other is heightened sensitivity or awareness. Rooting makes you stand firm while heightened sensitivity enables you to respond quickly to neutralize any incoming force.
Tai Chi Chuan used to be called shadow boxing because you play with an imaginary opponent when you do solo practice. Each movement has a martial meaning with each part of your body being trained as a weapon for self-defense.
Besides solo practice, Tai Chi also has two-person drills known as “pushing hands” or tuishou. In these exercises you learn to sense your partner's intention and find his weak points while concealing your intended movements and maintaining your balance.
Tai Chi Ch'uan is also called “culture boxing” because of its richness. By learning Tai Chi, you become familiar with traditional Chinese medicine, philosophy, and the wisdom of China's five thousand year history.

--------------------------
HERBERT “BLITZ” BIBER is a former 8 x Full Contact Kickboxing Champion. Between 1978 and 1984, partially handicapped athlete Herbert Biber was a multiple award winning top competitor within the major fight organizations of his time: IBF, PKA, WKA, WMAA, WAKO, DVWS. Self trained Herbert Biber conquered 8 Champion titles of 6 fight organizations in 2 different weight divisions, including Full Contact Kickboxing Champion Europe, Super Lightweight -63 kg (IBF), and 1. Ever Professional Full Contact Kickboxing National Champion Germany, Lightweight -61,2 kg (PKA, WKA, WMAA).
At the time of this recorded sparring session, Herbert Biber was already retired for 2 years. On top he was also severely handicapped by an acute lower back injury plus related inability to exercise, at all, for 4 weeks prior to this event. This recorded sparring session was Biber's first physical exercise since then, due to said injury. Any professional athlete instantly knows how awkward that feels, performing when not being healthy, entirely off regular training rhythm, acutely injured and restricted in both fight technique and physical mobility, and with an even further increased injury risk, possibly resulting in permanent health damage...
Not many would have performed, at all, but Budo Spirit Warrior Biber nonetheless stepped up and delivered, still, even to a default. Afterwards he explained that he had put himself "at high risk, and thus cruised along on auto pilot at about 60 %, while holding back and being nice and a good sport. It was just fun, but this limited sparring session does certainly not reflect my true potential or fighting style, not even close. I usually fight in much more creative, different ways." And those who know him confirmed, and nodded in agreement.

BAM! Budo Action Magazine of Martial Arts & Healing Arts highlights a variety of authentic martial arts & artists of different styles and backgrounds.

PETER KWONG has been a martial arts practitioner for more than 25 years. His background in martial arts started in northern California studying Hung Kuen Sil Lum from Sifu Y.C. Wong. Peter then moved to southern California and studied Yau Kung Mon Sil Lum under Sifu Richard Van for several years. Finally, Peter studied with Sifu Johnny So under the Northern Shaolin Style.

It is through a seventeen-year practice of Northern Shaolin, with fellow senior classmates, that eventually led to the study of Tai-Chi Chuan and Chi Kung meditation. It is his hope to share this knowledge with those who have the desire to learn and benefit from Tai-Chi Chuan.

According to Peter, "Tai-Chi is based on the principles of I Ching (Book of Changes) and the Philosophy of Yin and Yang, which means maintaining a balanced way of life.
Tai-Chi is actually a martial art based on the development and circulation of one’s internal energy or vital force of life - the "Chi", which is the basis of the Chinese health system."

Peter's career as a full time actor has led him to be in more than 80 stage, television, and feature film roles. You may recognize him from "Big Trouble in Little China", "Golden Child", "The Presidio", Gleaming the Cube", TV's "My Wife and Kids", "The District", "King Of The Hill", just to name a few. He served on the National Board of Directors of the Screen Actors Guild and The American Federation of Television and Radio Artists. And he is also a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.
