Today, 2024/1/17, Javier Milei, libertarian president of Argentina, addressed the World Economic Forum convention in Davos.

Apparently the violence in Ecuador has been simmering below the surface for years. What brough the current chaos to a head was the prison escape of Adolfo “Fito” Macías, the leader of Los Choneros, one of Ecuador’s most feared gangs.

Apparently, the government started a fierce and violent crackdown against the gangs and the gangs reciprocated by ramping it up even further, the most stunning example being their armed takeover of a TV station during a live broadcast.

I assume this video is from the capital city of Quito but cannot verify.

Yes. It's real.

I'm posting this as it has been making the rounds lately and I think it is a good example of cultural differences. A fantasy of the West is that we are all basically the same and this could not be farther from the truth. There are some real differences baked into us from a young age when we are taught what is good or bad, acceptable and repugnant.

It's a lesson we should have learned when we brought "freedom and democracy" to Iraq, but hey, the West is just full of slow learners.

Meet Nicole Marie Rayez, once of Puerto Rico and now of the streets.

Initially, I found this funny in a Darwin sort of way. But the more I looked at it the more sad and pathetic I found it. I'm ancient and so have been out of any drug scene for a long long while. I had to guess what drug this was caused by and I just don't know for sure.

The best guess I have is that she uses Tranq (Xylazine) and has for a bit. Her left forearm is bandaged and what I took for a fresh tattoo on her right arm looks to actually be a large raw sore. The large sores could be caused by Tranq.

I have to wonder what causes addictions. I know in some cases stupid and curious and hubris are involved. You try something once out of curiosity and slowly get sucked in like a fly into a Venus Fly Trap.

People have talked about "self medicating" and I used to think that was just a lame excuse but the older I get the more sense it makes. Sometimes your past or current situation screams for numbing and then finds it then wants more and more of it.
