It has been a busy couple of weeks for law-related news; the thumbnail shows some hockey players boozing it up after a game so we will be talking about the five NHL, well four NHL players and one Swiss league player, charged for their involvement in an incident after the World Juniors in London a few years ago. But we will also talk about a couple of others, we will talk about, what I am calling a “climate lockdown” that’s ongoing right now as you watch this in Nova Scotia as well as the plea bargain struck by two of the four men held in custody after being arrested at the Coutts blockade.

On March the 6th 2024 in episode 195 of Don’t Talk TV I talked about Bill C-63 the new liberal hate crime Bill & I discussed the fact that these laws have been around for quite a while the main thing that’s happened here really is upping the ante if you will increasing the maximum penalties. Thursday the 22nd of February 2024, I happened to be in the London courthouse for a case and I saw dozens of news cameras and news crews setup outside of the court house so I was wondering what was going on; was it another appearance of the hockey players that I covered a few weeks ago, but no it was the sentencing of Nathaniel Veltman. On Monday, February the 26th of 2024 the Liberal Party of Canada tabled new legislation that among other things amends the Criminal Code and the Human Rights Act with new variations of hate crime laws. A lot of people have asked about this, just last week with my episode there were a number of questions in the comments box about it so today we are going to talk about some of the highlights from that case, it’s over one hundred pages so I am not going to go through the whole thing exhaustively but I want to touch on some key points.

In the early morning hours of Tuesday February, the 27th, 2024 a video was posted to Twitter that purports to show Justin Trudeau’s daughter, Ella-Grace Trudeau, totally out of her mind drunk having an epic rant about how awful her dad is and how he is stealing money from Canadians to pay for her vacation to Jamaica and how people should vote for the Conservative Party of Canada. By this afternoon, I’m filming this on the 27th, the video had over 150k views so I thought it was worth looking at and it was a good opportunity to consider some of the frailties of eyewitness identification and talk about whether this video actually shows what it purports to show.

One of the big pieces of news recently was the sudden and tragic death of American hockey player Adam Johnson playing in a British hockey league when his throat was slashed with a hockey skate. Recently a law school graduate who belongs to a subsect of the Sikh religion wanted to be called to the bar in Alberta but balked it making a pledge to the sovereign, that being the Queen at the time his Majesty the King, King Charles at present. Recently the Alberta Court of Kings Bench struck that down & I thought it would be an interesting case to look at and discuss and also why I think the Alberta Court of Kings Bench got this one right…& 👇 remember 👇
