So, 7 days after starting in his Alaskan Amber cap, the new Amberwing seed has sprouted. As usual, it will be given around a week to grow out before assuming its position as a pet house plant.

I think that this time, when it gets planted, the cannister will only be about 2/3 or 3/4 full. Then as he grows, more dirt will be added until we reach just below the lip of the planter.

Early in the month, I noticed Amberwing getting real droopy, so I tried a splint hook to prop him up and adjusted his lighting and watering; but to no avail. Then I noticed a break in the stem, and figured Santana, the sweet little tortiseshell kitty likely bumped him as she traversed the nightstand one morning to get some Cat TV time in the window. So that was it for this one.

As of 05-April, 2022, that one was terminated, and the replacement was started; leaving me with three seeds ready to go if needed, plus my three "archive" seeds I can still draw from if anything happens to these.

That's it for now. Thank you for checking this out. And as always, feel free to support my sponsor, which happens to be me; as I try to sell you all sorts of cool stuff on my eCrater, Etsy, and eBid stores.

This is my attempt to try to get a seed (Wildling-2019) to sprout on 4/20. I am hoping this can become an annual thing that catches on with other growers. Since there is no guarantee of when any given seed will sprout, I am doing 2 per day up through the 20th (though the last two will just be logged as having been started on 4/20)

So here are the first pair, starting on 2022-04-13.

I recently learned that around here, spider plants just do not do well outside. In fact, we discovered only one spot outside where a Spider can thrive, and that one still needed kept in a planter. That was Spider Plant Ping. I am quite certain, that planted in the ground around here, they will just up and die come Winter.

Just from a few days outside in partial sun (being brought back in at night) nearly killed Webigail's second baby. So, this one is now a part of two projects; the Spider Plant Pet Project and a Necroplantsy project. Granted, these Spiders are hardy critters, so it should be pretty simple to bring it back from the dead. Still credit toward my Necroplantser title is credit, no matter how small and elementary.

For now, it is occupying the spot in my bedroom where Spider Plant Teddy will ultimately reside, but this should have just the right lighting and warmth conditions to bring it back to life before too long.

Looks like we have at least 2 sprouted now. They should be ready to share a sup of dirt on Saturday's planting. The others will continue to develop Dark Sauna. Also starting another small batch from the same mater, but giving them their own towel. Film at Eleven.

Alright, it looks like Dark Sauna is going to be the best way to do these. And on Saturday, when I get various things planted in cups and cannisters of dirt, the swimmers will get put on paper towels and switched to Dark Sauna, though since I will be using 1 gallon zipper bags, I will forgo the dark part (due to space considerations, and just keep them in a comfortable climate, since that has seemed to work fine for many other things lately.

All of the Skyscrapers and American Giant Hybrids have sprouted, as have most of the others. So come Saturday, everything sprouted will go planted rather tight together in a Planters Cheeseballs cannister and see if I can have perma sprouts (or are they done when the heads are gone? That is what this halfassed science, mad science, and halfassed mad science is all about; experiencing and learning...

Less than 24 hours after starting these lemon seeds, one of the two that were shelled looks like it is sprouting. I also decided to say screw it on seeing how long it takes them to sprout cracked instead of shelled, and shelled the rest (and it looks like a couple of those may have been just starting to sprout inside their shell as well). This is how I am doing citrus seeds from now on, always shelled, not just cracked and never ever uncracked. However, now that I know our previous failure was due to using whole instead of shelled seeds, and not necessarily the germination technique, this next lemon I just cut into (it gave 5 seeds) will use a mix of Dark Sauna and Darkwater. I'll gamble 2 on Darkwater; though if there is no seed inside the runt, then it will be 2 and 2.

Time for what should be my final pre planting season Pet Project. For this, I have 5 lemon seeds from a lemon purchased a few weeks ago at Grocery Outlet. After about 12 hours of rinsing in warm water, they were then air dried and put in a pill bottle until now. Now it is time to see if I can get any to sprout, if I didn't dry them to death earlier. I'm of course not expecting any fruit off of these, not at this latitude. Nah, I just like having trees as pet houseplants. Got a taste of that with avocados, and now want more arboreal variety here. However, I will not be starting any other types of trees until I have at least one of these lemons going. I won't even start an avocado Pet Project until then either. Got enough to work on for now.

This should really be considered the second entry for the cucumber pet project. I'm thinking I may go ahead and do a little renaming on the other one dealing with these cucumber seeds and retroactively making that the first entry in this project.

Anyway, I upgraded one of the Marketmore 70 sprouts from its initial little plastic shot cup and it is now spending its formative weeks in a regular 8.5 fluid ounce styro cup, and will likely get planted out back once we know there won't be any more freezing or subfreezing nights or days.

Adding one more thing to the salad bowl this year. This really should be my second to last pre season pet project. Tomorrow I will get started on the final, Pet Lemon Trees.

This penultimate pet project is freshly purchased Garden Giant Radish seeds. I know these are supposed to be able to germinate via the Dark Sauna method, so that is the only way I am bothering germinating these.

Less than 24 hours later and we already have sprouted 2 topside Backup Backups, 3 Darkwaters, and even 1 in the damp paper towel in a baggie, a technique I am calling Dark Sauna. Although I am going to continue to let them grow out and see what we get, I am going to declare that Dark Sauna really does not seem to have any real benefit for germination (unless container space is an issue) over 2 Seeds/1 Cup, and I likely will not be using Dark Sauna for cannabis seeds much at all in the future.

As of around Noonish today, 2022-03-16, 2 of the Honeyblume seeds had sprouted, as well as 2 Skyscrapers and 3 Ponyblumes. Of course, this is being uploaded about 7 hours after this was recorded, and there has been more notable progress; so there will definitely be another update tomorrow.

I am predicting that by Sunflower Sunday, these test seeds will all be ready to plant fairly densely in a Planters cannister, and will be joined later by several representatives of the Swimming Teams, once the Darkwaters really kick in here.

So far as of today (2022-03-16), 6 of the Shastas are nicely sprouted and should be ready for planting by the weekend. I plan on doing three individuals to be my perma pet daisies (2 indoor and one outside), a pair to share a cup, and if nothing else is ready by then, put that last odd one in the cup with an earlier Shasta that lost its partner due to a stupid little oops on my account.

Alright, after a couple recent instances where I had to pluck a couple unexpected sunflower popups in cups of dirt that were for other plants (and subsequently rinsing and eating said sprouts), I decided to try germinating and growing out (probably until when the first tiny roots show) a bunch of sunflower sprouts for nomming.

I'm doing this in two groups, a light group consisting of Skyscrapers and what I call Ponyblumes; and a dark group, with American Giant Hybrids and what I call Honeyblumes. The reason for the separation is because the dark seeds bleed messily while germinating, turning their water into a dark purple mess. So, I figure I keep the darks separate and will then drain and rinse them regularly until they are ready for either planting or a final rinse and preserving for eating.

I am also doing a set of 10 darks and 10 lights in damp paper towels. These will actually all get planted together in a Planters cannister for another couple tests; one just to see how dense I can have them growing and still be significant enough to snip for nomming, as well as seeing if they will continue to grow back after snipping for a perpetual sunflower sprout snack.

Since I may be stressing out the backups due to not having them on a steady and regular lighting cycle yet (hoping to be on a daily indoor/outdoor cycle real soon, and later perhaps outside 24/7 if no freeing nights are happening), I am going ahead and starting some backup backups, and engaging in a little more half assed science in the process. That is, I am trying three different germination techniques here once more. Specifically, I am doing both of the 2 Seeds / 1 Cup method (Topside and Darkwater) and then also damp paper towel in a baggie. For each one, I am doing 4 seeds.

Alright, so from the general Salad Bowl grow journal, I pulled two of my sprouted Bell Pepper seedlings to be their representative in my Pet Projects collection for 2022. These two looked like my best looking ones, and will now be sharing a cup of dirt until it is time to upgrade them to some sort of planter, to likely be kept indoors but hopefully perpetually producing.

This was from the 9th of March, 2022. At that time, The only two items of significant note here are that the single Brussels Sprout had finally come alive; as did the two new cucumber seeds. They were not quite yet ready for planting though, but that will be covered in the next update, which is a pretty sizable one, I think, spanning at least two days.

This was from the 7th of March, 2022. At that time, I added more bell pepper seeds to the mix, plus started our final four cucumber seeds (2 in a damp paper towel and two directly in dirt), and also added tomato seeds of uncertain origin (one of three breeds, I can recall). I am calling these Mater Mutts for now.

Additionally, back then, the Brussels Sprouts seeds at least cracked, and I started the first batch of sunflowers on a daily outdoor/indoor and dark lighting cycle, as long as the weather is good.

Adding a baby spider from Spider Plant Mindi to the journal as an additional subject. Caught Mindi trying to plant this baby into one of the avocado planters, so figured would turn it into another pet project; ultimately being planted somewhere outside as a companion plant to something else.

I am dubbing this one Spider Plant Teddy. And one of these days, I may discuss my odd naming conventions...or not. I may keep 'em to myself instead.
