What are Afrocentric Alternative Schools and what is its role in reconstructing the disadvantaged experiences of racialized students at all levels of the education system and breaking down structural barriers to success for black students? Also, what’s the connection between race and how accessible and equitable opportunities in education and employment account for the experiences of marginalized community members?

These are just a few of the many topics that are discussed in a compelling conversation with one of Canada’s notable researcher advocating on education for change: Professor Carl E. James, an educator, author, and Senior Advisor on Equity and Representation at York University. In this #INNterview, Prof. Carl James documents the struggles, contradictions and paradoxes in the experiences of racialized students at all levels of the education system.

Professor Carl E. James is the Senior Advisor on Equity and Representation at York University and teaches cross-appointments in the Graduate Programs in Sociology, Social and Political Thought, and Social Work. He is also the author of numerous books and scholarly articles that revolve around his research in the areas of intersectionality of race, ethnicity, class and citizenship and how accessible and equitable opportunities in education and employment account for the experiences of marginalized community members.

Isabella Gamk, Toronto-based housing activist who runs Protecting ODSP and OW Funding (POOF, @poof2018), joins INN24’s Dee Hundal in an open-hearted discussion around the right to protest, rising poverty and crime and its connection to increase police budgets.
Gamk was charged with being a "common nuisance” at Yonge and Dundas Square, where she was protesting the magnitude of poverty and rising homelessness in the city of Toronto amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

TORONTO — Grassroots advocates from Toronto ACORN came together at Nathan Phillip's Square to pressure the City of Toronto’s executive committee to pass the vacant-home tax proposal with a higher tax rate, which has been implemented in Vancouver, BC. If the proposal is approved, the city stands to gain $55-$66 million in tax revenues per year, and this fund would be utilized for affordable housing projects.
