Are real men always just stoic and emotionless? In our reaction against wokeness, we must be careful not to double-down on the old rigid stereotypes of manhood that are the actual culprits of the very sexuality and gender identity problems we're trying to correct! One of the major (and early) tasks in my work with clients--especially clients with sexuality struggles--is training them to feel and deal with their emotions. The problem is they've been conditioned to suppress and dissociate from their emotions, and this leads to acting them out through addictive behaviors.

Increasingly over the past year, fellow conservative Evangelicals have been responding to Side B "gay Christianity" (Side B = affirming of LGBT identities but not affirming of homosexual sex) by arguing that Side B is in error by not repenting of same-sex attraction itself, making the claim that the experience of same-sex attraction/arousal/desire is sin itself, whether or not one acts on it. This condemnation is stemming from a particular understanding of Original Sin and concupiscence (the flesh's desires toward sin). Though I agree with these Christians opposing Side B, I am convinced this approach is wrong biblically, theologically, and pastorally. I've been mulling over this issue for over a year, so here's where I stand.

My pastor asked me to preach on engaging the culture. So, I preached on Matthew 10, Jesus' instructions to the disciples before sending them out as witnesses. He gives authority to drive out demons and heal the sick, and the enemy retaliates against this. If we are going to engage the culture, we must know that we will be hated and we will suffer.

That's the question in this debate between Reformed theologian James White and "Single Gay Christian" author Gregory Coles, hosted by the Mid-Atlantic Reformation Society in Sept. 2023. Here's a reflection on the two different approaches in conservative Christianity to sexual sin, such as porn, sexual addiction, and homosexual behavior and unwanted same-sex eroticization. The purity culture mindset sees such struggles only as sins caused by our sinful nature; therefore the emphasis is on repentance and accountability. The "outgrowing porn" approach (sexual integration and maturation) affirms the goodness of our sexuality while seeing patterns of sexual sin and deviant attractions and arousal templates as rooted in our lack of sexual development and childhood experiences; therefore, the emphasis is on curiosity and compassion. Let's compare the two approaches and see how the Husband Material community and Desert Stream Ministries' Living Waters program (as well as Reintegrative Therapy) serve as ideal examples of the outgrowing sexual sin model.

Responding to the "It's Just Me and Jesus" Mentality:..

I might step on the toes of my fellow Christian counselors, but I'm taking to task the common use of 2 Corinthians 10:5 as the basis for Christian cognitive-behavioral therapy. Teaching that you must take EVERY thought or idea in your head and analyze it and change it to "make it obedient to Christ" can be overwhelming and burdensome for people prone to anxiety and OCD (and addiction). Instead, I propose Psalm 46:10 as the basis for a more mindful approach to intrusive and distorted thoughts.

The Greek word which we often translate as "faith" in our Bibles, "pistis," is often better translated as "allegiance" or "faithfulness" in Gospel-related passages. Matthew Bates' books "Salvation by Allegiance Alone" and "Gospel Allegiance" powerfully argue this case. I believe this can be key to addressing a number of controversies in the church, especially the question of "gay Christianity."

Here's a "reflession" (a reflection on a therapy session) on a time a client asked my thoughts on other Christians telling him he just needs to get close to God and God will fill him with such love that he'll need nothing from anyone else again. I explained why I both fully agree and disagree with this sentiment. Yes, God meets all our needs. But he uses people--The Body of Christ--to do it. Christianity isn't about being more "spiritual," but about being incarnational.

October 27th-29th, 2023, I was in Poland for the 9th annual IFTCC Conference as a speaker! The International Foundation (formerly Federation) for Therapeutic and Counselling Choice was founded by Mike Davidson from Core Issues Trust in the UK to be a hub of cross-disciplinary approaches to issues of sexuality and gender coming from a Judeo-Christian worldview. This year--my first ever--we had over 200 delegates from 32 nations! I share my highlights and an exhortation to the church in America based on my plenary presentation on the self-state model I use with my clients.

Some recent events serve as the perfect case study of the sexual identity crisis I've been warning about for years: the Unconditional Conference for parents of LGBTQ-identified children at Andy Stanley's Northpoint Community Church, and the mixed messaging from Pope Francis regarding homosexuality. Darrell was the longest running cast member of Saturday Night Live, best known for his celebrity and political impressions, like Bill Clinton. My analysis of the portrayal of Aaron Hernandez' sexuality in the Netflix documentary Killer Inside: The Mind of Aaron Hernandez. Assuming everything presented in the documentary is accurate, I explore his same-sex attraction and behavior using Joseph Nicolosi's developmental model for homosexuality. The documentary lacks some depth I would prefer, so my conclusions are only tentative.

Reflecting upon a recent therapy question in which the client with a phobia asked if the point of counseling is to learn how to live life and do tasks while enduring anxiety or to help the anxiety go away. This brings up a broader issue in counseling in general as well as Christianity. Is the purpose of counseling to learn how to cope with mental disorders or to be healed of disorders? When we pray and follow God, will he answer by saving us from the struggle (deliverance) or giving us the strengths we need to persevere through the struggle (sustenance)?
