Metanoia

Ghosts in the window of the church across the street
Wandering spirits searching for a place to rest their tired feet
Maybe grab a bite to eat
Vampires clutch brief cases, they're shaking hands
Staking lawless claims on stolen land

Sometimes the wind blows, sometimes it rains
There's always one thing round here that never seems
to change

The mayor's lawn is green these days, but the garden's
full of weeds
The car he's driving still guzzles gasoline
He's drinking bottled water infused with Thorazine

Sometimes the wind blows, sometimes it rains
There's always one thing round here that never seems
to change
Here in this lonely city founded by the Sons Of Cain

Spirit Rising

Every time we meet you try to push me down
Knock me off my feet, try to kick me around
I used to wonder why, but that problem ain't mine

Me, I'm feeling alright
Despite the clouds in the sky
Inclement weather sometimes is just a new chance to try
A chance to rise above
To turn your pain into love
A chance to lift yourself higher, depending on your desire

So the next time we meet look me in the eye
Fear is your disease, it will no longer be mine
And when you see me smiling don't be angry with me
Another spirit is rising, another soul living free
Another spirit is rising, another soul living free

Laying Paradise To Waste

Who was it that said...?
Who cares did it make any sense?
Which way did he go?
Well, nobody knows
Or maybe they just won't say

He went straight up to Heaven
At least that's the word on the street
At the 7-11 he walked in with no shoes on his feet
Said 'thank you for nothing! All this stuff here, but nothing to eat!
Think I'll go hungry today...'

If you're searching for pleasure
Well, by God man, you've found the right place
All for comfort and leisure
Did you let paradise go to waste
Where will you go now? Where will you go?

Returning

Autumn closing in
A need to be forgiven
Lived a life of sin, ate the fruit forbidden
Still the Garden grows
A cold wind lows
And these old clothes hanging from these bones

Trees like skeletons against the sky
Cobweb clouds in an old man’s eyes
Elusive answer to the question why
Attention focused on some far horizon
Return to me, I will return to you

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
‘Return to me,’ declares the Lord Almighty, ‘and I will return to you.’
Babylon is a strange place; a place I am no longer welcome. Perhaps I never was. Acceptance of this fact as an immutable reality has proven to be a profoundly liberating experience.
For more than a decade now, I have worked to transform tiny pieces of Babylon into thriving garden oases. Yards Into Gardens, that has been my motto; almost a mantra of sorts.
The location shown here, where I have lived for eleven years now - a place I have recently dubbed The City Digs Garden - is one such oasis. An environment in progress, as I imagine most, if not all gardens to be.
Learning As I Go; another mantra of sorts, is always in effect here. Everywhere, in fact. Learning As We Go, as others join in this wonderful work.
Babylon seems displeased, having locked it’s doors to any who choose a life other than the one it sells under threat of violence and coercion. So be it; I am not buying.
I left The System years ago, and mistakenly thought that would suffice. Now, as some already know, I am working toward leaving Babylon the location as well. A hope of mine is to leave some gardens behind for others to tend, nurture and bring to a more plentiful fruition than I would!
Shhhhhh... don’t tell Babylon!
Can you hear the birds singing?
Can you feel the warm sunlight?
Early days of Spring springing
Winter days fall behind
Seeds in the garden
Flowers blooming in the yard
A part of my Sunday routine of late entails the delivery of Digested Hay (I call myself a Digested Hay Removal Expert) from the boarding stable I help at, to a local family owned farm I stumbled upon back in the Fall of 2020. I find it deeply satisfying providing useful, organic fertilizer to the decent folks who run the small farm.
Life is good...!
Eye Can See
Birdsong drifting on a breeze
Sunlight shining through the leaves
Blue sky as far as eye can see
Clear mind open to receive
Robin puffing out his chest
Sparrow singing from a nest
Stray cat takes a little rest
Morning isn’t finished yet
Flowers bathing in the sun
Showers later on to come
Right now the day has just begun
Somehow all work will be done
A Little Heaven
A little heaven in this place
Every time I see your face
The way your eyes shine when you smile
Dispels the darkness for a while
Watchful eye perceives your grace
Quiet mind awaits
For you to linger in your haste
And walk beside me for a pace
This house is haunted when you leave
By ghosts who wander in their sleep
Morning light brings no relief
Until you’re safe back home with me
Always Saying Something
Same old story, same old sin
Here we go again
Same old lying, forked tongue
Same old whispering
The Devil’s saying something
Fruit is rotten on the vine, dark clouds fill the sky
An offering of sour wine comes as no surprise
The Devil’s saying something
Cold look in a stranger’s eyes, heart as hard as stone
Too late did he realize
He lived his life alone
The Devil’s saying something
Always saying something...
Beyond These Walls
Heard the news yesterday
Turned around and walked away...
Pulled the plug from the wall
Outside the window, beyond these walls
Wind... birds singing
Bare feet planted on the earth
Sowing seeds... rebirth
Wind... birds still singing
Wind... Spring springing
Look At Me Looking At You
Look at me, who do you see?
Just another man with another plan
Check out the shoes I’m wearing, why is
everybody staring?
Well past the point of caring
I’m on my way
Too easily amused, so used to being used
Can’t seem to win but losing comes naturally
Looking at you I thought I saw a fool
Always skipping school, making your own rules
Learning how to stand, working with your hands
Now that you’re a man, I see you had a better plan
Not so easily amused, even harder to confuse
Born to win even when you lose
So naturally
Look at me, who do you see?
So Lucky So Long
Up every morning just before the dawn
Says there’s so much to do before the daylight’s gone
Doesn’t need a watch to figure the time
He can reckon the hour by where the sun hangs in the sky
Always something doing come rain or come shine
If you need a favor well, he’ll find the time
Old man what do you recommend?
Can you teach a city boy how to live off the land?
If we were neighbors I could be your friend
Show me how to live like an old fashioned man
Stoic and silent but he ain’t shy
When he shakes your hand he looks you right in the eye
Doesn’t like to promise but he’ll stand by his word
Walks away from gossip doesn’t follow the herd
(Chorus)
Doesn’t sleep much but he snores when he does
Married thirty years now and he’s still in love
Wakes up every morning just before the dawn
Says ‘I never thought that I would be so lucky for so long
(Chorus)
Yearning To Take Flight
The way you’re looking at me, can’t help but wonder what you’re thinking
What is it that those brown eyes see?
Have they been fooled by what you’re drinking?
Honeysuckle on the vine, Tiger Lily blossoms winking at the sky
This place was made for you and I
Waiting on a moment to be right
The Northern Star is shining bright
As evening wanders into night
We speak our minds by candlelight
Two spirits yearning to take flight
In The Garden
Seated in the garden green and growing
Hummingbird where are you going?
Every blossom on every stem awaiting your tongue
Petals open toward the sun
A show for everyone
Bees are buzzing as a good friend comes around
Talking about something he heard has been going down
He doesn't quite believe it, me I have my doubts
We shrug our shoulders and watch a passing cloud
Dog is smiling, laying there on the ground
Kittens are hiding; I see one sneaking around
Playing in the shadows as the sun is going down
Seated in the garden green and growing...
Gone
Down by the river where the water flows
Gonna jump in and just go where it goes
Got a little job, gonna leave it behind
No one gonna know until quitting time
And I’m gone, I’m gone
A ways down the the river there’s a place I’ve been told
Where the wind blows slower and the green grass grows
The living there is easy and it’s said you can find
Just enough to live on and some peace of mind
So I’m gone, I’m gone
