Synopsis (from Alchetron.com):
There are various theories to the story of the tsuchigumo, and in the Heike Monogatari, there is as following (they were written as 山蜘蛛). When Yorimitsu suffered from malaria, and lay on a bed, a strange monk who was 7 shaku (about 2.1 meters) tall appeared, released some rope, and tried to capture him. Yorimitsu, despite his sickness, cut him with his famous sword, the Hizamaru (膝丸), causing the monk to flee. The next day, Yorimitsu led his Four Guardian Kings to chase after the blood trail of the monk, and arrived at a mound behind Kitano jinja where there was a large spider that was 4 shaku wide (about 1.2 meters). Yorimitsu and the others caught it, pierced it with an iron skewer, and exposed it to a riverbed. Yorimitsu's illness left him immediately, and the sword that cut the spider was from then on called the Kumo-kiri (蜘蛛切り, spider-cutter). The true identity of this tsuchigumo was said to be an onryō of the aforementioned local clan defeated by Emperor Jimmu. This tale is also known from the very fifth noh, "Tsuchigumo."

A fisherman is walking with his companions at night when he finds the Hagoromo, the magical feather-mantle of a tennin (an aerial spirit or celestial dancer) hanging on a bough. The tennin sees him taking it and demands its return—she cannot return to Heaven without it. The fisherman argues with her, and finally promises to return it, if she will show him her dance or part of it. She accepts his offer. The Chorus explains the dance as symbolic of the daily changes of the moon. The words about "three, five, and fifteen" refer to the number of nights in the moon's changes. In the finale, the tennin disappears like a mountain slowly hidden in mist.

The film features the scene in which Taira no Koremori defeats a demon who has disguised itself as Princess Sarashina.

Production and exhibition:
"Momijigari" was originally noh, but was performed for the first time as kabuki in 1887. It starred the popular actor Ichikawa Danjūrō IX. His performance inspired the first narrative filmed in Japan.

The film version, taken in 1899 by director Shibata Tsunekichi, starred Onoe Kikugoro V and Ichikawa Danjūrō IX. Danjūrō was originally opposed to appearing in films, but was eventually convinced that his doing so would be a gift to posterity.

Momijigari was planned primarily as a record of the performance of the two famous actors. Shibata, who worked for the Konishi Photographic Store, shot it using a Gaumont camera. It was filmed in November 1899 in an open space behind the Kabuki-za in Tokyo, with Shibata using three reels of film. It was a windy day, however, and a gust blew away one of Danjūrō's fans, a mishap that remained in the film since retakes were not possible.

Since the film was meant only as a record, it was not initially shown publicly. Danjūrō only saw it himself a year after it was filmed. There was an agreement that it would not be screened for the public until after Danjūrō's death, but when he fell ill and could not appear at a performance at the Naka-za in Osaka, it was screened in his place. It ran from 7 July to 1 August 1903, a long run spurred in part by the fact that Kikugorō had recently died. Danjūrō himself died in September 1903, and the film showed at the Kabuki-za after that, for one week starting on 9 February 1904.

Mikata Shizuka of the Kanze school performed at Yarai Noh Theater in September 2021.

“Tomoe” is taken from the famous literary work “The Tale of Heike”, and portrays the last dramatic moments between Tomoe, a female warrior, and her lord Kiso Yoshinaka. The story portrays Tomoe’s unswerving loyalty and love for Yoshinaka, together with Tomoe’s deep regret that she cannot meet her end together with her lord, and her resolve to follow her destiny as a woman.

Aoi no Ue (葵の上) is a fictional character in The Tale of Genji (Genji Monogatari). Daughter of the Minister of the Left (Tō no Chūjō's sister) and Genji’s first principal wife, she marries Genji when she is sixteen and he only twelve. Proud and distant from her husband, Aoi is constantly aware of the age difference between them and very much hurt by Genji's philandering. For a short while, after giving birth to Genji's son, Yūgiri, and suffering episodes of spirit possession, does Aoi actually appear appealing in Genji's eyes. The episode of spirit possession itself (mono no ke) is extremely controversial and brings forward two female characters of the tale: Aoi (Genji's wife) and Lady Rokujō (Genji's mistress). The relationship between the two women may be that between victim and aggressor, if one follows the traditional interpretation of spirit possession, or that between accomplices expressing their discontent with the Heian system of polygynous marriage (and with Genji, obviously). Aoi dies at the end of the "Aoi" chapter and her exit from the tale is thus definitive.

The marked tracks indicate that the title is the name of the throat singing style, and not the song itself. This is explained in between songs, along with the song names and the meanings of the names/songs. There may be more that are the name of a singing style rather than song, but the accent is so thick and his voice SO deep, it's next to impossible to make out what he's saying most of the time.

The sygyt style absolutely blows my mind.

If you cannot stand the singing, at the VERY least listen to Chiraa-Khoor. It contains elements of all styles used in the concert with extremely catchy and FUN music. Seriously, it's a song about horses where the stringed instrument is used to minic a horse's whinny, and the singer even does a horsey "pbbbb" at the end. I feel a child-like sense of wonder every time I hear it. The same goes for Oguden Taiga which has many varieties of mimicked bird calls.

A progressive rock masterpiece that also happens to be a psychedelic rock masterpiece. Indonesia Maharddika is one of the best progrock songs I've ever heard in my life. Meanwhile, Geger Gelgel sounds as if Iron Butterfly spent a month in Indonesia dropping acid. Everything in between is a fantastic blend of western style music mixed with traditional Indonesian music. An amazing album through and through.
