Updated recording: This is an original tune written/copyright by Jonathon S. Brenner©2022 - All Rights Reserved. As performed by The Brenner Brothers 7/31/23. I think Jon did an excellent job with this one and it was easy for me to come up with harmonies right away.

Old hymn made famous by the Stanley Brothers way back in the '40s.

Just an iPhone recording with some pictures I took for something to look at.

Just our version of the popular worship music tune.

Our Dad passed away on 4/24/22. This hymn was one of his favorites, we played it at his Memorial Service.

Daddy Claxton was an Alabama farmer at the turn of the century in rural Alabama.Most historical records say that he was Black. The railroads of that time had a monopoly on farmers crops getting to market and many lost their farms. He stole a train to get his crops to market and although tried, was not convicted, the jury was made up of sympathetic farmers from the area.

Tune made popular by Roy Acuff in the '50s.

The reference to Jim Hill (AIUI) is sarcastic as he was a Robber Baron who didn't at all care for Hobos riding his 'main line'.

Silent Night (STILLE NACHT)
Composers:Joseph Möhr; Franz Xaver Gruber (1818) - Austria

Silent night, holy night!
All is calm, All is bright
Round yon Virgin, Mother and Child!
Holy Infant so Tender and mild,
Sleep in heavenly peace,
Sleep in heaven-ly peace.
__________________________
Silent night, holy night!
Shepherds quake at the sight!
Glories stream from heaven afar;
Heavenly hosts sing Al-le-lu-ia!
Christ the Saviour is born!
Christ the Saviour is born!
__________________________
Silent night, holy night!
Wondrous star, lend thy light!
With the angels let us sing
Alleluia to our King!
Christ the Saviour is here,
Christ the Saviour is here!
__________________________
Silent night, Holy night!
Son of God, love's pure light
Radiant beams from Thy holy face,
With the dawn of re-deeming grace,
Jesus Lord at thy birth;
Jesus Lord at thy birth.

Author: Placide Cappeau (1847) - Translator: John S. Dwight;
(we slightly modified the Chorus)

O holy night! the stars are brightly shining;
It is the night of the dear Savior’s birth.
Long lay the world in sin and error pining,
Till He appeared and the soul felt its worth.
A thrill of hope- the weary world rejoices,
For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn!
Fall on your knees! O hear the angel voices!
O night divine, O night when Christ was born!
O night divine, O night when Christ was born!

Led by the light of faith serenely beaming,
With glowing hearts by His cradle we stand.
So led by light of a star sweetly gleaming,
Here came the Wise Men from Orient land.
The King of kings lay thus in lowly manger,
In all our trials born to be our Friend.
Fall on your knees! O hear the angel voices!
O night divine, O night when Christ was born!
O night divine, O night when Christ was born!

Truly He taught us to love one another;
His law is love and His gospel is peace.
Chains shall He break, for the slave is our brother,
And in His name all oppression shall cease.
Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we;
Let all within us praise His holy name.
Fall on your knees! O hear the angel voices!
O night divine, O night when Christ was born!
O night divine, O night when Christ was born!

Purportedly Written in the 1850's by James Lord Pierpont, an uncle of the famously wealthy financier John Pierpont Morgan it pays homage to the youthful fun of the then popular winter sleigh races.

On Jordan's stormy banks I stand,
and cast a wishful eye
to Canaan's fair and happy land,
where my possessions lie.

Refrain:
I am bound for the promised land,
I am bound for the promised land;
oh, who will come and go with me?
I am bound for the promised land.

O'er all those wide extended plains
shines one eternal day;
there God the Son forever reigns,
and scatters night away.

[Refrain]

No chilling winds or poisonous breath
can reach that healthful shore;
sickness and sorrow, pain and death,
are felt and feared no more.
[Refrain]

When I shall reach that happy place,
I'll be forever blest,
for I shall see my Father's face,
and in his bosom rest.

[Refrain]

United Methodist Hymnal, 1989

Be thou my vision, O Lord of my heart;
naught be all else to me, save that thou art.
Thou my best thought, by day or by night,
waking or sleeping, thy presence my light.

Be thou my wisdom, be thou my true word;
I ever with thee, and thou with me, Lord.
Born of thy love, thy child may I be,
thou in me dwelling and I one with thee.

(Be thou my buckler, my sword for the fight.
Be thou my dignity, thou my delight,
thou my soul’s shelter, thou my high tow’r.
Raise thou me heav’nward, O Pow’r of my pow’r.)

Riches I heed not, nor vain empty praise;
thou mine inheritance, now and always.
Thou and thou only, first in my heart,
Ruler of heaven, my treasure thou art.

High King of heaven, when vict’ry is won
may I reach heaven’s joys, O bright heav’n’s Sun!
Heart of my heart, whatever befall,
still be my vision, O Ruler of all.

We are still working this one out but not a bad recording. Adapter: John W. Work Jr.

Refrain:
Go tell it on the mountain,
over the hills and everywhere;
go tell it on the mountain
that Jesus Christ is born!

1 While shepherds kept their watching
o’er silent flocks by night,
behold throughout the heavens
there shone a holy light. [Refrain]

2 The shepherds feared and trembled
when lo! above the earth
rang out the angel chorus
that hailed our Savior’s birth. [Refrain]

3 Down in a lowly manger
the humble Christ was born,
and God sent us salvation
that blessed Christmas morn. [Refrain]

Perhaps originally a Negro spiritual, made popular and slightly modified by Johnny Cash and Vern O. Fossett- perhaps originally recorded by the Garner Bros in 1925. Author Unknown

Come, Thou Fount of every blessing,
Tune my heart to sing Thy grace;
Streams of mercy, never ceasing,
Call for songs of loudest praise.
Teach me some melodious sonnet,
Sung by flaming tongues above;
Praise the mount! I’m fixed upon it,
Mount of Thy redeeming love.
Here I raise my Ebenezer:
Here by Thy great help I’ve come;
And I hope, by Thy good pleasure,
Safely to arrive at home.
Jesus sought me when a stranger,
Wand’ring from the fold of God;
He, to rescue me from danger,
Interposed His precious blood.
Oh, to grace how great a debtor
Daily I’m constrained to be!
Let that grace now, like a fetter,
Bind my yielded heart to Thee.
Let me know Thee in Thy fullness;
Guide me by Thy mighty hand,
Till, transformed, in Thine own image
In Thy presence I shall stand.

3 Sentences: God's Law, like the heat of the Sun described, cannot be escaped from - and is forever, like the fear of Yahweh. Forever like the path of the Sun across the sky - and reliable, like the Sun's rising and setting. The benefits to Men and Women of adhering to God's Law are four - new life, wisdom, joy and light for the eyes (to see) - and will bring great reward. God's judgement regarding His law, is true and righteous. His silent, yet declared, message will spread to cover the earth.
