Before cycling home, I stop to take a look at the river taking a right turn upstream towards Utrecht. The rest of this short video you can see the canal called Kamerikse Wetering that was dug in the 11th(!) century. Back then (and for centuries after), this canal was an important trade route to Amsterdam. Nowadays, all ships and vessels take the huge canal from Utrecht to Amsterdam, called Amsterdam-Rijnkanaal.

The river Oude Rijn was the most northern boundary of the Roman empire. Along this border (Limes) they built many fortresses. Nowadays Roman finds regularly show up when dredging the river or building houses.

This channel is my attempt to share with you the peace and quiet I experience whilst riding my bicycle in the Netherlands.

Wind noise level: moderate

Nieuwerbrug aan den Rijn is the starting point and after a few minutes (8.15), we're back in Woerden (Laurium). At 12.00 I probably saw some birds of prey I think. I can't remember. At 13.14 you can see an artist's impression of a Roman watchtower along the river, two thousand years ago. In Woerden we're diverted sometimes for short distances but I stayed as close to the river as possible. The last frame is of the river taking a right turn upstream towards Utrecht.

On my way home from Bodegraven I took the path along the south side of the river. A path like this is called a Jaagpad (tow path). In the past, ships would often be tugged by people or animals and this path is where they would have walked.

*Until now I was working on ways to decrease the wind noise. Nothing I tried made a significant improvement. So now I've decided to accept the simple fact that the Netherlands is a windy country. Viewers who are sensitive to wind noise are advised to turn down the volume. In the description of each video I'll rate the noise. (None-light-moderate-severe)*

We start this video in Woerden. The Romans called it 'Laurium' as you can see in the opening shot. The river Oude Rijn was the most northern boundary of the Roman empire. Along this border (Limes) they built lots of fortresses. Nowadays Roman finds regularly show up when dredging the river or building houses. At 22.33 I stop at one of my favourite farms. A really posh one with a beautiful iron gate. https://www.buitengewoonbodegravenreeuwijk.nl/profiel/knodsenburg/

I believe this is my first video showing this pontoon/ferry. It is hand operated and there's at least one more that I know of. (shown in the opening frame) Unfortunately, my bicycle fell down when I was on the ferry so I'll show a ride on the ferry some other time. In this 1st part of 6 episodes the river does not yet appear. In the rest of the clips it does. This river was the most northern boundary of the Roman empire. Along this border (Limes) they built lots of fortresses. Nowadays Roman finds regularly show up when dredging the river or building houses.

A lot of my video's finish with a frame of the church. The tower is the oldest part of the building and is claimed to be 11th century (1000 AD). It used to be catholic but nowadays it's a protestant church.

It was pretty windy (windforce 5), so this video does get rather noisy towards the end when I'm cycling against the wind. The sky was beautiful. I don't mind rain, hail, sleet or snow but strong winds are not(!) my favourite conditions to go cycling.

What a beautiful day this was. Gorgeous clouds and almost perfect weather for cycling. Although there was heavy traffic (a lot of cars I mean), I thoroughly enjoyed this ride home on such a wonderful day.

I'm so glad the wind has died down (at least for today). Last few weeks we've had nothing but storm and strong wind.

De Beekhoeve (Beekhoeve.nl) is an organic farm that sells raw milk and other raw produce, meat (all from their own cattle) and other local products. All of it tastes fantastic. And they have some really beautiful and tame farmcats. I am just a consumer without connections to this farm.

This was on my way home from Maarssenbroek. The sun shone bright and there were lots of birds flying around. It was lovely in Haarzuilens.

Anywhere I park my bike, the horizon is tilted. That's really weird. And then the horizon straightens towards the end...

Finally a day without strong wind. It was excellent weather to get on my bicycle and go to the thrift store in Maarssenbroek.

The castle you see (at about 26 min) is 'Kasteel de Haar'. Built by a Rothschild. For those who speak english, the proper way to pronounce it, is 'Wrote-shield' not Roths-child. The name is German and means: Red-Shield.

... and taking some pictures of birds of prey.

My bicycle wouldn't stay perfectly vertical so that's why the horizon is askew.
This place is a 'Stiltegebied', meaning that it's a 'quiet/silent area' nature reserve. Because Schiphol airport is closeby, planes landing and taking off can be heard.

Hardly anyone on the streets, lots of herons inadvertently startled by me and finish with church bells and the scenic tour around my town. It was very tranquil.

Hopefully, the mindfulness I experience when enjoying the Dutch countryside, is felt by the viewer of this video. This was a sunny day in autumn. You can hear the buzzards when I stop to watch them.
