In his 1939 book "Nutrition and Physical Degeneration: A Comparison of Primitive and Modern Diets and Their Effects " Weston A. Price presented a series of ethnographic nutritional studies he performed across diverse cultures, including the Lötschental in Switzerland. He came to the conclusion that modern industrial diets, heavily concisting of processed foods high in sugar and low in essential nutrients, were responsible for many diseases like tuberculosis or dental caries, which were not present among primitive populations around the world. Although most of the ethnic groups he studied were hunter gatherers, the people living in Lötschental valley lived as traditional farmers/ herders, and also managed to be in tremendous physical shape.

"Maschinenstürmer" (machine-breakers) was a protest movement aimed against the social consequences of mechanisation during the industrial revolution. The destruction of machines and newly built factories was a method to prevent the substitution of skilled workers by unskilled ones, or was used as a protest against the lowering of wages and the worsening of labour conditions.
