Walking the Goslings: Best Part of My Day

The sun was shining brightly as I opened the door to the barn. I stepped inside and was greeted by the sound of chirping and squawking. The goslings were waiting for me, their little feathers fluffed up and their beaks open wide.

I smiled and picked up the first gosling. It was so small and fragile, and I felt a surge of protectiveness. I gently placed it in a basket and then picked up the other gosling.

I carried the basket out of the barn and into the yard. The goslings were excited to be outside, and they started to flap their wings. I set the basket down on the ground and opened the lid.

The goslings immediately jumped out of the basket and started to explore. They ran around the yard, pecking at the ground and chasing each other. I watched them for a while, laughing at their antics.

After a while, I decided it was time to take the goslings for a walk. I put on my coat and hat and grabbed a leash. The goslings were eager to go, and they followed me out of the yard and onto the road.

We walked for a while, and the goslings seemed to enjoy the fresh air and sunshine. They waddled along beside me, their little feet pattering on the pavement.

We passed by the pond, and I decided to stop and let the goslings play. I tied the leash to a tree and watched as they ran around the park, chasing each other and exploring.

After a while, we started to walk back home. The goslings were tired, and they started to get fussy. I picked them up and carried them back to the barn.

I put the goslings in their pen and gave them some food and water. Then I went inside and relaxed. It had been a long day, but it had also been a good day. I had enjoyed spending time with the goslings, and I knew that they had enjoyed their walk.

As I lay in bed that night, I thought about the goslings. They were such innocent creatures, and they brought me so much joy. I knew that I would never forget the day I took them for a walk.

/Imagine Once upon a time, on a small homestead, there lived a family who decided to adopt two adorable baby geese named Dale and Velzy. Little did they know that their lives were about to take a hilarious and unpredictable turn!

From the moment Dale and Velzy hatched, they had an insatiable curiosity and boundless energy. It seemed as if they were determined to keep their family on their toes at all times. The family quickly learned that raising geese was no walk in the park—quite literally!

Every day, like clockwork, the family would take Dale and Velzy on a walk to the nearby pond. The geese would waddle along, honking excitedly, as if they were leading a parade. Onlookers would stop and stare, both amazed and amused by the sight of a family being led by two geese.

One sunny morning, as the family set off on their daily goose walk, Dale and Velzy decided to inject some extra excitement into their routine. The moment they reached the sidewalk, they sprinted ahead, dragging their bewildered family behind them. The family shouted, "Slow down, Dale and Velzy!" But the mischievous geese only honked louder, convinced that they were in a race to reach the pond first.

The geese led their family through the neighborhood, causing chaos in their wake. They dodged mailboxes, startled cats, and even managed to snatch a freshly baked baguette from a passing bicyclist. The bicyclist, too stunned to react, simply watched as his breakfast vanished into the clutches of two geese with wings flapping triumphantly.

Finally, after a wild goose chase that seemed to last an eternity, they reached the pond. Dale and Velzy dove into the water with glee, splashing around and honking as if they had just won the goose Olympics. The family, exhausted but laughing uncontrollably, watched as their feathered companions enjoyed their well-deserved victory swim.

Did you know that geese are nature's organic grass-fed self-propelled lawn mowers? They are an eco-friendly way to keep your grass neatly trimmed without any greenhouse gas emissions. Simply install a gaggle of geese on your property and they will quickly devour every stray blade of grass, dandelion, and weed. The only exhaust they produce is a steady stream of little green pellets that make excellent fertilizer.

Geese come with built-in alarm systems to deter any predators trying to interfere with their grass removal operations. Their loud honking and aggressive hissing ensures no stray dogs, foxes or neighborhood cats will try to disrupt them at work. They are self-sufficient, requiring only a source of fresh water and the occasional handful of corn to keep them happily trimming and fertilizing for hours at a time.

The only downside is that geese are not very open to human supervision or direction. Attempts to herd them to certain parts of the lawn or speed up their mowing schedule are met with indifference or open hostility. They follow their own internal grass-eating clock and agenda. But with patience and understanding, one can develop an appreciation for these organic free-range lawn mowers and the quality of work they do, at their own pace and in their own way. • Hike in the surrounding area. Check out the trails at Dale Hollow Lake State Resort Park or hike to scenic overlooks like Eagle Point Overlook. The Eagle Point Trail and Ford's Cove Trail are popular easy hikes.

• Visit Dale Hollow Lake State Resort Park. This beautiful state park surrounds part of the lake and offers picnic areas, campgrounds, boat rentals, playgrounds, hiking and gorgeous views of the lake.

• Shop in local towns. Check out the antique stores, craft shops and art galleries in towns like Burkesville, Celina and Livingston.

• Take a lake cruise. Hop aboard the authentic sternwheeler called the Spirit of Dale Hollow for a scenic 90-minute lake cruise. Cruises run from April through October.

• Go horseback riding. Several stables around the lake offer guided horseback riding tours, including saddle rides through the scenic trails.

• Visit local wineries and distilleries. About 30 minutes from Dale Hollow Lake are two wineries, DelMonico Winery and Apple Barn Winery, as well as Corsair Distillery. Stop by for tastings and tours.

The town square is also home to the Overton County Courthouse, a stunning example of neoclassical architecture that was built in 1937.

The tall grass rustles in the breeze as I run, my paws thundering on the earth. The sunshine is warm on my back as birds chirp and flutter by.

This land feels alive and wild, so different from anywhere else I've known. Wild creatures inhabit this place, unseen but sensed. Deer and fox and raccoon cross these hills under cover of night, as I often do now in dreams.

An eagle soars high above, riding the thermals and surveying the landscape. I feel small yet at peace here, a tiny being in a symphony of life—all interconnected, all deeply rooted like me.

The rolling hills extend as far as I can see, dotted with forests of oaks and maples reaching to the sky. Tall peaks rise into clouds in the distance, ancient companions that feel like neighbors.

Each sniff brings scents familiar and defining. Each rustle invents a tale of joy and home. Adventure lives here, so does magic, as I do.

In this space, I feel more alive than ever before because at last, I have found where I live. My spirit expands into the land, soaking in beauty, wild freedom, and vibrant power—this place that is home.

For a perfect moment, I forget myself and become one with the land. My heart swells with love and belonging, and I am home.

The vista stretches endlessly before me, alive and teeming. And so do I, fully present in each pawstep, each whisper, each heartbeat of this wild world I now inhabit. I am free.
