Lady feeding the birds. I had a great conversation with her. A few people around accused us of endangering them because we we weren't wearing our masks. The lady kept saying "you'll be fine, just keep 6 feet distance..." They were scowling at us and pointing and complaining. I kept thinking about how the birds were not afraid of COVID and contact with the lady as they flew onto her arms and shoulders. It was like being in a movie. I had one of the best conversations I've had with a stranger in years. We talked about the birds and our lives in a time of plague.

I loved watching these workers restoring the monument of General William Jenkins Worth where his remains are also buried where during the pre-COVID period tourists would swarn to see and photograph the famous Flatiron Building. This mausoleum is located on a small traffic island bordered by 25th Street, Broadway, and 5th Avenue in New York City. I was speaking to a director of the Parks Department who was describing some of the restoration techniques used but the audio was just terrible. After watching scenes all over the country with fire has been used to destroy statues, I was quite moved by watching these workers using the edifying fire to restore and protect this monument.

If you would like to learn more about the monuments in Manhattan, NYC you can see photos and info here: https://www.nycgovparks.org/art-and-antiquities/permanent-art-and-monuments/results?search_text=&borough=M&Submit=Search&googleClientId=347742380.1610174512

Thanks to the director of the Parks Department for speaking to me and the great workers who take care of our monuments. I was a bit jealous of the worker using the fire while adding the patina. The joy of watching him work was stronger than the envy.

This is a short excerpt of an interview with Dr. Hans Seyle on how stress is neither bad nor good but both. At this moment in history when the President of The United States has had his social media accounts suspended, not to mention all the others who have been suspended and terminated, these words by Dr. Seyle are poignant. I want to echo his words at the beginning of this excerpt. Preventing and even punishing people for expressing themselves is the worst thing you can do. It creates a horrible feeling that your voice doesn't matter, and it dehumanizes all of us.

On the night of December 21, 2020 Jupiter and Saturn came close enough in the sky that they looked like a double planet. The sky was overcast so I couldn't see it, but I wanted to commerate it with a little light and sound video experiment.

December 2020, New York City, feces in the subway. The same thing was happening Pre-COVID. The only difference is people are wearing masks. When the plague was gaining steam the MTA announced that they would be cleaning the subway every three days. Eventually that became every 24 hours at the same time ridership was plummeting. Whatever "new" cleaning measures they put in place has not demonstrated that the subways are any cleaner than before. The subway is just as filthy as before the plague. Maybe the MTA can put masks on the seats or make sure that someone checks the cars for fecal matter before letting it leave the station to start its route. I understand that it is very difficult to expect people to do their job when they did not come to work...

This scene happened around July of 2019 on 14th Street. In New York City it's common to see these groups who go by different names like "The Black Israelites" for example. I don't know what this cohort call themselves. but they all have something in common. They say that they are "the real Jews" or "the original Jews" and that others who are called "Jews" are fake. The spokesman for this group with the large Star of David on his shirt was explaining why "light skinned people" are not "our people." He was addressing one person. I was immediately struck by the light skinned guy on his right. The irony was so strong I was looking around to see if anyone else was noticing this. I started recording and couldn't help laughing the more absurd the scene became. The person who yells at them is clearly someone with a deep love of chocolate. The spokesman points to a board full of pictures of celebrities like Halle Berry, Alicia Keys, Tracy Ellis Ross, Bob Marley, Mariah Carey, Lenny Kravitz, Barack Obama and says that they are not "Our People." There were clearly people who were not happy about mentioning Bob Marley and he was losing a chunk of the audience. I said to the young Black female with the very natural looking bright yellow hair about the light skinned man standing next to the spokesman. She kept asking him "What about him? Is he our people?" and he said "yes." More laughter...He goes on some muddled explanation about Domnicans and PuertoRicans being our people because they live in the hood and go to the same prisons they do. I had to exit...What I took away from this scene is that this group is concerned with authenticity and fakery. The other thing is that there are exceptions like the one made for the light skinned man in the group. The lingering question is: what exactly is the criteria that has to be met by light skinned people to qualify as "our people?"
