Ethical Individualist

Cognitive rights are an extension of the recognized human right of free thought, which is the right of an individual to hold or consider a fact, viewpoint, or thought independent of others' viewpoints. This right is violated when someone attempts to exploit an individual by manipulating cognition to change a person’s beliefs, behaviors or identity. This has many names such as mind control, brainwashing, or marketing.

The topic of this video is “Thinking Guided By Reason”. Introspection shows that in linking thought with thought I am guided by the content of my thoughts. I am not guided by the physiological processes of the brain.

We learn in Rudolf Steiner's Philosophy Of Freedom how to discipline the mind by practicing contemplation. This leads to the development of intuitive insight. When we contemplate thought we are thinking about thinking.

In his Philosophy Of Freedom Rudolf Steiner describes thinking contemplation. Depending on the viewpoint taken, upon seeing a table a person may say “This is a table” or “I am pleased with the table” or “I am thinking of a table”. Materialism, spiritualism, realism and idealism are discussed.

The spiritualist looks to gain knowledge through feeling. The thinker gains knowledge by establishing concepts. How does this compare?

This video is step #50 in The Philosophy Of Freedom Study Course called the Steps To freedom. The challenge for Step #50 is to observe an object and notice the thoughts and feelings that arise. To what extent are you passive or active when you experience a feeling? To what extent are you passive or active when you establish concepts?

Video #49 of The Philosophy Of Freedom Study Course compares the Everyday State with the Exceptional State. It is called "Observation Of Thought" and begins a study of thinking.

The challenge for step #49 is to recognize how we are in the Everyday State as we go about our daily life. Notice how thought is kindled while you are observing an object or event. This is the first of 12 challenges in this chapter on the way to reaching the level of pure thinking.

Rudolf Steiner quotes:
“TPOF presents the wide range of human standpoints, often masquerading under such strange philosophical names, in a way that leaves the reader free of attachment to any particular approach and able to let the various concepts speak for themselves, as though each were a photograph of one and the same object taken from many different angles.”

“For anyone who wants to penetrate into the truth of the world it is important to realize that broad-mindedness is necessary because twelve world-views are actually possible for the human mind. If one wants to come really to the truth, then one must try clearly to understand the significance of these twelve typical views.”

“My method of presentation of the various world conceptions has its origin in my orientation toward thinking intuition. To effect thinking intuition one must be capable of thinking idealistically with the idealist, and materialistically with the materialist. For only thus will the faculty of thinking intuition be awakened.”

“For in the case of a book like this, the important thing is so to organize the thoughts it contains, that they take effect. With many other books it doesn’t make a great deal of difference if one shifts the sequence, putting this thing first and that later. But in the case of TPOF that is impossible. It would be just as unthinkable to put page 150 fifty pages earlier as it would be to put a dog’s hind legs where the front ones belong.”

“Catharsis is an ancient term for purification by means of meditation and concentration exercises. If a reader takes this boo..

TRANSCRIPT
Welcome to The Philosophy Of Freedom Study Course that I have named Steps To Freedom.

This video will help prepare you for the study course.
In this video I will talk about the missing chapter in the Philosophy Of Freedom and what I had to do to find it.

I have studied the Philosophy Of Freedom for 30 years and have done my own research into book and the life of Rudolf Steiner.

There are many editions of The Philosophy Of Freedom available in German and in English under various titles.
But for myself I felt something was missing in these editions.
And something was missing in the literature and the teachings about The Philosophy Of Freedom.
This may sound odd but they seemed to lack the spirit of freedom.
But none of these editions are the original.
Parts of the original text have been completely removed in the popular editions.
Other parts are revised and new sections have been added.
This includes even the available German editions.
Most of the changes are known.
But I have found many other edits some very small edits that changed the meaning in a big way.

It is no longer clear to me who made the alterations and when they were made.
The book has also been translated and then re-translated by various people guided by a variety of intentions.

When Steiner wrote the book he was immersed in the spirit of freedom.
His creative impulse formed a written work of art that is alive and speaks to us and transforms us as great art will do.
You just can’t touch up great art years later and give it another meaning without dimming its light.

Surprisingly I could not find the original text from the usual Steiner book sources.
They..

The Philosophy Of Freedom
Over 100 years ago Rudolf Steiner wrote a book called The Philosophy Of Freedom.
It was written in German and has been translated into English many times by different translators hoping to make it more readable.
It lays out a step by step path to free thinking and free action based on Steiner’s introspective observations of human nature.
This groundbreaking philosophy of life has remained unknown because it is written in a style that is difficult to understand.
The problem is that if the principles in the book are not understood they cannot be applied to life.

Steps To Freedom Study Course
This is why I am creating the Steps To Freedom Study Course.
It uses a simple comparative study method to clarify the principles, so they can be immediately applied to life.
I will be producing several study course videos every week that will discuss each step to freedom using colorful images and simple descriptions.

IDENTITY POLITICS, EMPATHY, AND REASON
A person striving for freedom becomes more and more a unique and creative individuality.
Free human beings develop their own traits and roles for their own reasons.
But the view that a human being is able to develop into a completely independent free individuality seems to be contradicted by the facts.

By no choice of our own, we are born into a race, an ethnicity, a gender, a family, a nation and often a religion.
As a result of our birth we acquire the characteristics and identity of a group.
If we choose to become a free self-determined individuality we must create our own self-identity.

Our self-identity is created with thought.
Thinking has no limits.
This means our individual-identity has no limits.
Our group-identity confines us within the limitations of the group and groupthink.
Our individual-identity allows us to form our own views, and strive to become who we wish.

There are now many university studies programs offered to learn about various group identities and experiences of race, ethnicity, being a women, and gender sexuality.
None of this kind of academic research is able to reach the unique character of the single individual.
The only way to understand an individuality is to listen to their view of the world and observe their striving.

There is a need for our universities to also offer students “Individuality Studies” programs.
Many people lack the ability to recognize a person’s unique individuality, and instead only see stereotypical group-identities.
Individuality Studies could move students beyond the often divisive group-identity, and toward our common humanity as individuals.

Some professors and politicians are turning group-identity into identity-politics to incite outrage.
Identity-..

The deepening of our cognitive abilities, our ability to know, is the path toward freedom.

The Philosophy Of Freedom is a study of cognition, what it means to know. Each of the first seven chapters takes up a cognitive process: willing, desire for knowledge, thinking, perception, conception, representation and cognitive satisfaction.

On the Left you have the idealists and on the Right you have the individualists. A higher way is the ethical individualist who values freedom above all else. Freedom is the only value supported by the Left and Right.
