The Sound of Minidisc - ASMR's Eleven Portables

I've got a shotgun mic, some sticky tack, a case of mouth breathing, and a bunch of working (and barely working) batteries. What is a man to do but line up his favourite portable Minidisc units for a bit of ASMR?

In order, they are:
1. Sony MZ-1
2. Pioneer PMD-R1
3. Sony MZ-R50
4. Sony MZ-R37
5. Aiwa AM-F5
6. Sony MZ-N920
7. Panasonic SJ-MJ10
8. Sharp MD-MT77
9. Sharp MD-DR77
10. Aiwa AM-F80
11. Sharp MD-MT270

The SD-VH90 is hamstrung by two things: its loud fan, and the poor speakers it comes with. Change the speakers and voila! the SD-VH90 is a changed beast. Let’s take a closer look.

Before you watch this video, please check out my previous video detailing some of the VH90’s specifications: https://odysee.com/@MarcheMinidisc:8/Sharp-VH90-Minidisc-combo-deck-review-SACD-DVD-Audio-720p-odysee:b

This is the 4K version of my Odysee video of the same title. That can be found here: https://odysee.com/@MarcheMinidisc:8/Sharp-VH90-Minidisc-combo-deck-review-SACD-DVD-Audio-720p-odysee:b

Sharp's SD-VH90 is a late-comer to the world of bookshelf systems. Apart from mediocre speakers, and its noisy fan, this is a great combo unit. It shows power, poise, plays back nearly every modern optical media format, and boasts optical in and out for linking to both downstream and upstream audio systems.

Let's take a closer look, and listen to how it sounds.

I picked up an M1 MacBook Air in February and have been really impressed with it. Not only does it keep cool, when the software is properly optimised, it usually keeps up with the more expensive MacBook Pro (2019 16 inch, CTO, 16GB, i9, Radeon 5500), and does it without a sound.

In this video I compare the baseline M1 MacBook Air with the expensive MBP listed above, and which has been my workhorse since selling my iMac Pro.

It does well, and now that Lightroom Classic has been updated for the M1, it even exports nearly as fast as the Intel MBP. Nice.

In good light, the R6 is king. In bad light, it still lags, both against a 5D4's live view and and OVF. Sure, the R6 may be able to nail focus in lower light, but at what cost in speed and with how choppy a visual feed? If there is anything I wish mirrorless cameras will correct - and soon -, it is visual feed chop in low light. In this video I show the 5D4 and R6 back to back in the same dark studio, focusing using their respective live view/LCD systems with the same lens, and indirectly comparing the choppiness of each.

Original video: 02 - Higher Purposes - An A to Z wherein Aiwa meets VorZüge and the AM-F80 is sublimated
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X0iEq2RpT78

Aiwa's AM-F80 is one of the most beautiful Minidisc recorders ever. Its backlit screen, easy to press buttons, and powerful internal amp, make it a classic for utility and sound.

Its warts: overly aggressive volume amplification, and internally generated noise, are hard to forgive. Thankfully, options exist.

Let's take a closer look at my favourite option, Vorzüge's VorzAMP DUO II.

About Marche Minidisc:

Marche Minidisc will cover a variety of topics central to Minidisc. When it covers headphones, it will do so in a Minidisc-specific manner, aimed at finding headphones that deliver the least load to the widest variety of MD amps, but also show which - if any - MD units are capable of going toe-to-toe with modern hardware when driving earphone/headphone loads.

And, while we're on it, I will cover the nitty gritty of post-recording ATRAC anomalies, recording ins and outs, and a whole lot more. If you're a benchmark geek, I have published a number of RMAA results at my blog, below:

With this channel, I aim to explain why it is that, despite leaving Minidisc in 2006 and in 2014, I keep coming back.

No, it hasn't the best interface, but it's not horrible. No, it doesn't hiss the least, but it is up there. No, it won't output 80dB of stereo separation, but gosh is it godly otherwise. The MZ-NH1 was Sony's first Hi-MD recorder- and in my opinion, it is the best Hi-MD recorder to this date. Oh, and this isn't a review, it's a Thursday thing.

More about the MZ-NH1:
http://www.minidisc.org/part_Sony_MZ-NH1.html

Also, let's see how the X-T3 with firmware 4.00 and the amazingly breathing-free 18-55 2,8-4 decimates the 5D4 and 24-70ii for video blogging stuff.

Note: I attempted to fix a subtitle for 5D4 image, which should be shot on the Novoflex BALPRO T/S but may still read Cambo. Even after updating, it didn't change. Or did it?

This is my farewell address/review to/for the Fujifilm GFX50s. It is a lot easier to use than a digital back, and outputs images just as good. But chalk it up to the videos I did earlier comparing outputs from the EOS R and SL to it, as well as pitting it against older digital FF like the D800, and I am left wondering why I kept the faith.

Consider this my farewell to the 50s. It is a good camera and part of the most exciting contained MF system out there. But I am returning to dSLR for the time being.

NOTE: I am aware of all the audio problems in this video. It was super duper hot and the air conditioner was blasting. I think that the noise tool did something with the tops of the signal. I will try to better implement it next time. Thank you.

At 250$, Audio Technica’s AT899 is much more expensive, but after listening back to back, I got to say that in this instance, the 210$ price difference may well be worth it over the 40$ CVM-V020. Better build (not shown in this video), better sound, way less noise, and way more money.

I imagine no one is vacillating between these two, but in case I’m wrong, here you are.

NOTE: I tried to live stream this response five or six times. Two of them were messed up do to my error. The rest were destroyed because of internet errors. I have to fix that. I have kept up a version of the previous live stream that survived for about 40 minutes and then died. That version is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eIMRV2e7Uv0.

Then I decided to try to re-cap the entire thing as a normal video, to then upload later. That is this. I could have recorded the live stream, but I wasn't smart enough to do that. So.... there is this.

This is the YouTube version of the following blog post:

Leica's digital M could be the perfect event camera - here's what needs to change: http://ohm-image.net/opinion/photophile/leica-digital-m-make-perfect-event-camera-changes

Since 2015 I have used Leica M cameras for event work. ‘Event work’, as in a professional fashion. ‘In a professional fashion’ as in paid Embassy powwows, corporate conferences, family photography, proms, dances, university reunions, and so on, in and around Tokyo. Prior to that, I used a pair of Nikon dSLRs.

Somewhere along the way, I borrowed a mate’s M9. Its simplicity blew me away. So did the sharpness of its tiny lenses. The next thing I knew, I was bidding on a used M240 and offloading the Fujifilm cameras I hobbied around with. I am neither a doctor nor a lawyer. I am a still life and event photographer on a normal budget. Leica users like me exist.

While I don’t think that Leica cameras are necessarily better than Nikon cameras, the things that initially drew me to the M have kept me there. Among them are the following:

This is my farewell/review to/of Canon's 80D, which rocked most of my videos this year, and which blew me away at most every twist and turn. I've since sold it, the circumstances of which I hope this video illustrates.

Disclaimer: YinYoo sent the D2B4 to me for the purposes of a review at Headfonics. Later, I published a shorter review at ohm-image the text of which last week I thought to turn into the script for this video. Inside are housed four balanced armature and 2 dynamic drivers. The D2B4 started around 110$ USD but can now had for a bit more than 80$. It is well made, poorly branded, and good sounding.
