Canberra has a number of small rainwater dams scattered around the region. These are often little oasis's of calm and peace in the city, surrounded by bush areas and like a slice of the heaven in the city. They also hold some MONSTER yabbies. Join Ben and me as we search for some bait, with mixed success.

A fun little session catching a range of different estuary fish on ultra light tackle using supermarket baits, bread and chicken.

Mullet are great fun, like salt water trout. Fish for them in the same way you would rainbow trout, you will get heaps. They love a well presente fly, as well as a range of baits.

Luderick are good fun, and not as tricky as many people make out, especially in the smaller sizes. Light weight and small hooks will see you hooking up no problem.

Small bream, tarwhine and toads are common bycatch. They tear a bait to bits lol. Sometimes, they even hook up.

A night of bait fishing with Ben at Tuggeranong. The hope was to get all 4 viable species: Carp, Cod, Yebbly and Reddy. We had bread, cheese and yabbies for bait, how could we fail? Did we succeed in the challenge? Watch to find out!

Thank you Ben for the photos!

Went for a bit of a night time fish with my mate Ben. Had a great time, and got some great fish. A few really nice Yebblies and a small cod, a reddy and good company, who could want better on an urban fishing trip.

DON'T leave your mess for others to have to pick up. Someone has to do it, if you made it, it should be you!

I cannot put quite into words how much disgust I feel for those people who kill fish gratuitously, inhumanely and without reason and then just leave them to rot in public places. This has to stop or we will turn up to see signs saying NO FISHING!

A fun session of a little over an hour at midnight catching whatever came along on Friday, 2nd Frebruary.

One bait of 2 scrub worms got me 4 nice fish.

Can't beat the scrubbies!

Was fishing at 3 am, and saw the coolest light display. I figure it was a rehearsal for the upcoming Lights over the Lake planned for the 25th and I got an early preview. Either that, or aliens.

A bit more perch fishing action from my favourite local spot. A couple of nice fish on on R5 Baits Curl Tail Grubs (R5 Baits can be found at R5 Adventures. Hit up Krystal and Mike. Great people, fantastic baits. https://www.youtube.com/@r5adventures922) as a warm up for the main event on worms a little later. All up, about 45 minutes spent, plenty of hits, 3 fish.

Good fun any night.

Ridiculously cool for this time of year though.

Went fishing at my usual spot on the Bowen Park drain. Watching the weather close in, I packed up soon after arriving, cutting my session short, but saving myself a real headache. Not long after I packed up, the area my gear was in was under water as a thunderstorm broke overhead!

Moral of the Story - DON'T PLAY IN DRAINS!

Been fishing the Bowen Park Drain, and getting some banger redfin along side the plagues of small stuff. These are just a few of the ones I have caught.

Fishing for redfin can sometimes be frustrating when you are getting a heap of small fish on worms. Upping your bait game to include Yabbies can really increase the chances of catching some decent redfin perch. A simple running sinker rig, a good spot and you can really bring home a good bag of redfin.

And do not walk past the skinny water. This drain is only a foot or so deep. Big redfin and bigger carp haunt its shade zones through the day, and hunt the whole drain through the night. It is one of the best places on Lake Burley Griffin for some fun sight fishing on big fish on light plastics (unweighted also good)

Have fun and treat your catch humanely.

The Wood Royal Commission uncovered a list of names of high profile pedophiles protected by the NSW Police. The names, rather than being revealed, were concealed, the documents ordered sealed for 90 years lest Australians lose faith in the Judiciary, which should in itself amply demonstrate we can have no faith in the Judiciary. Some Australians are not going to allow this to rest at that...

Spring brings out the best in carp fishing, with the carp moving around the place in active schools, feeding and shoaling in the warm shallows, providing plenty of opportunity to sight fish for them.

Walking the river bank, looking for fish and casting to them is a very challenging, and productive, way of fishing. Spring presents a great opportunity to do this in the local region as the rivers are clean and clear of the algal blooms which discolour them in the summer and autumn. You can see the fish, but they can also see you, so stealth, and bait presentation are essential if you wish to be successful, but it is exciting and very fun. Next time I will target them with a soft plastic grub, but this time, it was bread baits.

Fishing man made structure can often pay off in great rewards. As I fished a bread bait for carp this morning, I got a very pleasant surprise. A nice big cod took my bait and within a few minutes of arriving at my spot, I was onto a nice size cod. Cod season closed yesterday, so why not?

I was so impressed with the R5 Baits that I ordered a box full. They arrived and it was kinda like Christmas and my birthday all at once... Great quality and some custom colour combinations. Looking forward to getting them out on the water,

This was an attempt to shoot an unboxing, it failed when the cats got interested in what I was doing and decided they had to check it out...

Winter is the time for big carp. The big fish come in to shallow water in the margins, where the water is warmer, to feed. This is when they are most regularly caught in my local waters. Summer is the time for large numbers, but many are only small to medium in size. Winter is the time the big girls come out to play.
