Every year we look after our neighbours' animals and birds when they go on holiday. As most of these are not used to being handled, there is no real strong bond of trust and particularly between us and them, who only have real contact with them for three weeks in the year. Tree fodder and tree hay predates farming as a way of feeding herded animals. With problems of soil erosion, monoculture and drought it is now undergoing a renaissance as a way of feeding ruminants. However, there is no reason why it can't be used in our own gardens as a great way to feed poultry. Our duck-egg-sitting hen is swapped for another and becomes the new Mummy for our baby jackdaw. Here we feed the baby cherries and egg but I've also since then added; apricot, apple and a little pasta. And has anyone else noticed how much the baby looks like a dolphin?

The elegant coturnix colour known as Tuxedo is created from the recessive English White gene and a dominant colour of your choice. In my case this is totally haphazard, as my quail are kept together and choose their partners as they please but we do still end up with tuxedo chicks! The colours I usually have are Rosetta and Tibetan tuxedo and I've always found them caring, friendly and elegant and as for the chicks...cute overload doesn't even cover it.

It's over 20 years ago now when I first raised quail with a hen and it was only in 2012 when I first had the means to film and publish this experience on Youtube. I have since realised, that these unique experiences were incredibly easy because of the personalities and aptitudes of our mother hens but that many things can actually go very wrong! To this end and because of the many comments and questions I have had on the subject, I have decided to attempt to do this again but with a step-by-step film diary.

Just to make things harder or maybe easier, I'm not using conventional 'hatching eggs' but eggs sold for consumption, which are from organically fed and outdoor raised quail from a local farmer.

So fingers and toes crossed!

After many experiments with environments, I finally come to the conclusion that our mealworms should live as we and our poultry do - in their own forest garden. Beetles are scavengers and seem very at home on the forest floor surrounded by all kinds of debris and greenery - dry leaves, mosses, moulds and fungi to name but a few.

I've got to be one of the World's worse nurses, I can faint at the sight of my own blood. This new mother hen decided that her chicks were ready to roost but she forgot to tell them how. Most mother hens will guide their chicks as they change from sleeping under the mother to roosting beside her and most mothers will start by guiding their chicks gently either onto the perch/roost in the coop or up into a tree. The Holy Grail of many a chicken keeper - get poultry to close the hen house door. Why invest in all kinds of ladder systems and electronic door hatches and gadgets, when maybe all you really needed to do was to plant a tree. Dust bathing is often a social event for our birds but Bangle thinks it better to be cautious when there is a predator overhead. With the ever expanding growth of the forest garden, it would actually be quite difficult for one of these large birds to land or even negotiate a flight plan. However, Bangle's taking no chances and once again it's our wall planter that's getting repossessed by poultry. 'You're not dead until you're warm and dead' (an adage from A&E) holds good for baby and adult birds and animals, including humans! Two weeks in the life of a rooster/cockerel we were looking after for our neighbours and the treatment we gave him. Wry neck is a condition I have successfully treated before in a young duckling but in this case we have a juvenile rooster with a chronic condition. Can anything be done? Please note all foods used are organically grown or raised - so as not to be adding to the toxic burden, which can trigger this sort of deficiency. Above all do not feed non-organic liver - find an alternative nutrient-rich food stuff instead, such as an organic hard boiled egg or wild invertebrates, seafood or fish from clean waters.

Pretty much one of my craziest ideas to date. How to get a whole flock of birds to behave in a box, without recourse to snacks. it was also better to film this at night - we finished at 3am as we had to keep collecting them from all the coops and trees and then putting them back before we got the next lot. I also made a mistake of opening up the compost bin and had to wash all the Polish before filming - hence the slightly damp-looking crests. #Alotofchickens #Christmassong #12daysofChistmas

Prácticamente una de mis ideas más locas hasta la fecha. Cómo conseguir que toda una bandada de pájaros se comporte en una caja, sin recurrir a los bocadillos. También era mejor filmar esto por la noche: terminamos a las 3 de la mañana porque teníamos que seguir recogiéndolos de todos los gallineros y árboles y luego volviéndolos a colocar antes de que tuviéramos el siguiente grupo. También cometí un error al abrir el contenedor de abono y tuve que lavar a todos los Paduanos antes de filmar, por lo que tienen crestas ligeramente húmedas.
À peu près l'une de mes idées les plus folles à ce jour. Comment faire en sorte que toute une volée d'oiseaux se comporte dans une boîte, sans avoir recours à des collations. il était également préférable de filmer cela la nuit - nous avons terminé à 3 heures du matin car nous devions continuer à les collecter dans tous les poulaillers et arbres, puis les remettre avant d'avoir le groupe suivant. J'ai également fait une erreur en ouvrant le bac à compost et j'ai dû laver les Padoues avant de filmer - d'où les crêtes légèrement humides.

The English White has even less written about it than my two previous colours, except of course for the Texas A&M Jumbo version, which is very well documented. I still hoping some day to come across a good reference book on the subject but until then I'm going to discuss personality and behaviour, which is actually probably more of interest. The Whites and the Pandas are wonderful little birds, sometimes rather shy and less 'pushy' than the Golds, particularly when it comes to nesting. However, they bond well with other birds and particularly well with humans, making great gardening companions and brilliant pets. Despite their high visibility, they are great free-rangers and foragers, so you'll need to keep an eye on them, if you take them out where there are predators.

La codorniz blanca inglesa tiene menos información escrita que mis dos colores anteriores, excepto, por supuesto, la versión Texas A&M Jumbo, que está muy bien documentada.
