Cochin-Pekin a beautiful breed with a dark and tragic history. At the height of the Cochin Craze in 1853, one bird in England sold for today's equivalent of £188,000 - $260,481. In the US a similar contagion 'Hen Fever' also known as 'The Fancy' swept the country. Enthusiasts and commercial breeders alike, on both sides of the Atlantic, waited eagerly at the docks as the fast clippers came in with a new cargo of Cochins. In the early days, before the prices began to rise, getting stock out of China was not that simple, the birds were subjected to the rigours of the voyage, which included typhoons, pirate attacks and being neglected and cooped up on shipboard for months. They also risked being cooked and eaten by the crew who had no interests in the profits to be made at the ports and viewed the Cochins purely as a potential dinner. All those inedible twigs and branches can be stocked in a wire frame and broken down over the Winter to create a habitat for invertebrates and a hibernation site for hedgehogs et al. In the Summer this will be ready to turn over to your poultry and you can recuperate the remaining dried twigs for a rocket stove. We were going away on holiday just as my quail started sitting 8 eggs and so I panicked because they weren't in the usual quail safe place and moved the eggs to an ad hoc wired section within it. This didn't work but now we're back and the quail has started to lay again in the original nest, so fingers crossed. The Pharaoh male 'Bertie' was hatched here last year with one of my hens and the Golden Manchurian female 'Dory' was purchased from a local organic quail farm. Therefore, I was hoping they both would have natural nest-building and chick-raising instincts!

Scott the Silkie to the rescue! Web forming Ermine Moths are beautiful creatures but they are also extremely destructive in the larval form. In a forest garden normally this is no problem, as with the amount of vegetation there is food for all and the leaves easily grow back. However, this year the moths have been prolific and their caterpillars are everywhere in the hawthorn trees and the wild birds can't keep up.

Organic and free-range quail? Yes it is possible! Sharing tips and strategies. These two were tame enough to be taking on a gardening job with me. The male was frightened by a jackdaw's cry but the female stayed with me all the time except when she took a break in the shade. This is a bonded pair, otherwise I would suggest free-ranging quail on a one-to-one basis as incidents like stray dogs or cats can happen.

Broody hens never cease to amaze me in their quest for motherhood but these two outdid all others with their ability to squeeze into a wall planter and sit on a wooden egg. So much so, in fact that if they hatch a wooden chicken, I won't even raise an eyebrow.

Something I'm often asked but I believe the French words for pet; 'animal de compagnie', encapsulate both the idea of a bird as a companion and someone to keep you company on a daily basis. Birds are great gardeners but they are also highly inquisitive, so will be quite happy watching you doing DIY or sit on your arm or shoulder whilst you type, make films or read a book. On occasions they've sat in the house and watched films, yes it was Chicken Run. I've taken them in the car, sitting on my knee, we've been to the beach and I've taken them to gardening jobs with me, everything, in fact you could do with a cat or dog and you get eggs.

Every year we look after our neighbours' animals and birds when they go on holiday. As most of these are not used to being handled, there is no real strong bond of trust and particularly between us and them, who only have real contact with them for three weeks in the year. Tree fodder and tree hay predates farming as a way of feeding herded animals. With problems of soil erosion, monoculture and drought it is now undergoing a renaissance as a way of feeding ruminants. However, there is no reason why it can't be used in our own gardens as a great way to feed poultry. Our duck-egg-sitting hen is swapped for another and becomes the new Mummy for our baby jackdaw. Here we feed the baby cherries and egg but I've also since then added; apricot, apple and a little pasta. And has anyone else noticed how much the baby looks like a dolphin?

The elegant coturnix colour known as Tuxedo is created from the recessive English White gene and a dominant colour of your choice. In my case this is totally haphazard, as my quail are kept together and choose their partners as they please but we do still end up with tuxedo chicks! The colours I usually have are Rosetta and Tibetan tuxedo and I've always found them caring, friendly and elegant and as for the chicks...cute overload doesn't even cover it.

It's over 20 years ago now when I first raised quail with a hen and it was only in 2012 when I first had the means to film and publish this experience on Youtube. I have since realised, that these unique experiences were incredibly easy because of the personalities and aptitudes of our mother hens but that many things can actually go very wrong! To this end and because of the many comments and questions I have had on the subject, I have decided to attempt to do this again but with a step-by-step film diary.

Just to make things harder or maybe easier, I'm not using conventional 'hatching eggs' but eggs sold for consumption, which are from organically fed and outdoor raised quail from a local farmer.

So fingers and toes crossed!

After many experiments with environments, I finally come to the conclusion that our mealworms should live as we and our poultry do - in their own forest garden. Beetles are scavengers and seem very at home on the forest floor surrounded by all kinds of debris and greenery - dry leaves, mosses, moulds and fungi to name but a few.

This new mother hen decided that her chicks were ready to roost but she forgot to tell them how. Most mother hens will guide their chicks as they change from sleeping under the mother to roosting beside her and most mothers will start by guiding their chicks gently either onto the perch/roost in the coop or up into a tree. The Holy Grail of many a chicken keeper - get poultry to close the hen house door. Why invest in all kinds of ladder systems and electronic door hatches and gadgets, when maybe all you really needed to do was to plant a tree.
