The protests in Hong Kong have placed the city under the eyes of the world. These are highly tense times, where a lot of different emotions appear to cross the minds and hearts of Hong Kong citizens (and please, fellow Hong Kongers, allow me the honor and privilege to refer to myself as one of yours). In other words, Hong Kong seems to live a period of Sturm und Drang ("Storm and Stress").

For a while I have been working on a transcription of Ludwig van Beethoven's first movement from the Sonata quasi una Fantasia No. 14, Op. 27 No. 2 - most commonly known as "Moonlight Sonata" (1801) - as an homage to the composer on the occasion of the upcoming 250th anniversary of his birth (1770 - 2020). This movement (Adagio sostenuto) is probably one of the most iconic pieces of music of the Romantic era. Both its melody and key signature were source of inspiration for countless Romantic composers following Beethoven, among whom Frederic Chopin (who, inspired by it, wrote his famous Fantaisie Impromptu, Op. 66).

Coming to the point, the aim of this video is to show Hong Kong as may have never been seen by people who may have heard of it, but never visited it. Beethoven's notorious movement (which I transcribed by keeping the original key signature, i.e. C sharp minor) functions as the soundtrack for a journey through some of the most iconic locations of the city. At the same time, this video is also a reminder to all of us citizens of this amazing city of what we love about this special place, which everyday arouses Romantic-period-like feelings and emotions through its painting-like sceneries and welcoming people.
