The energy transition is one of the biggest challenges for politics and society in Germany. Germany wants green power from solar, wind, biomass and hydroelectric generation to account for 80 percent of its energy mix by 2030. Is this a realistic target?
Germany wants out of fossil fuels: no coal, no gas, no nuclear power plants. Instead, the country wants to commit fully to renewables. But does this bring with it the threat of a major power blackout? Germany is gradually realizing where the sticking points are. Take grid security: This is much easier to guarantee in a power network with just a few dozen large power stations than in a decentralized network with multiple small-scale electricity producers such as rooftops with solar panels or wind turbines. "It’s now a matter of having to intervene several times almost every day to guarantee grid security,” says the spokesperson for one major network operator. If grid security can no longer be maintained, the threat of a nationwide blackout suddenly becomes very real. Another problem is reliability. Because the sun doesn’t always shine and the wind doesn’t always blow, there might be too little power available on particular days and at particular times of the year. This also raises the possibility of unforeseen power failures. One potential remedy could be power storage. There are many different ideas about how to securely store energy in order to bridge power gaps in the renewables’ supply: pumped-storage power plants, hydrogen storage, gigantic batteries. But, if these technologies exist at all, they do so only on a very small scale: Current storage capacity in Germany is 40 gigawatt hours - enough to supply the country for up to 60 minutes. And if there’s still no wind and the sun still isn’t shining? Does politics have a plan to provide Germany with sufficient energy to avert a potential blackout? These are some of the key questions explored by this documentary.

Now, he wanted to travel and enjoy the good things in life. Instead, his future took a different turn. An English engineer talked him into joining a very ambitious project: a telegraph line between Newfoundland and New York to speed up the exchange of news from Europe to America's business capital. Field agreed and came up with an even bolder plan: why not run the cable all the way across the Atlantic! A new age was dawning: steam ships, the railroad and the telegraph were all making the world smaller, but Europe and America were still more than a week's journey apart. To manufacture a cable of such immense length and then to stretch it along the seabed of the stormy North Atlantic was a challenge of shear awesome dimensions. Cyrus Field would end up spending 12 years of his life obsessed with this dream. Again and again, he drummed up enormous infusions of capital to finance his plan, he lobbied the English and American governments to support the project and convinced renowned scientists of his day - such as Morse, Faraday and Kelvin - to join the endeavor. Western Union, however, a major American telegraph company, was developing its own plan to connect Europe and America and thus became a rival of the ambitious Cyrus Field and his New York-London Telegraph Company. Field was confronted with repeated setbacks.

The Ministry of Power & Energy today (July 16) introduced the National Fuel Pass which allows the general public to purchase a guaranteed quota of fuel per week for their personal vehicles.
The fuel pass was launched with the technical support of the Institute of Information and Communication Technology Agency (ICTA), with the intention of easing the fuel queues.
Accordingly, one vehicle can be registered under one National Identity Card (NIC), passport number or business registration number, Power and Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekara said joining the launch.
A QR code will be allocated to each vehicle following the registration and verification of the chassis number, the vehicle registration number, the number plate and other details by the Motor Traffic Department (DMT).
The members of the public can obtain fuel twice a week according to the last digit of the number plate, using the QR code assigned to them.

John Glennie's boat Rose-Noëlle capsized in the Pacific in June 1989, and washed up four months later on Great Barrier Island. Director Mark Beesley mixes raw interviews and spare reenactments to convey the physical and emotional ordeal; the quartet were sometimes trapped inside a cramped section of the boat for days on end. The epic survival-at-sea tale won Best Documentary at the 1997 New Zealand Television Awards. The story was later retold in 2015 telemovie Abandoned.

After decades of “false and damaging” predictions about climate change, the left “still haven’t given up,” according to Sky News host Cory Bernardi.
“Sometimes the lefties get so cock-a-hoop at the progress they’re making, they forget to keep their craziest ideas under wraps,” he said.
“We’ve seen the organisation of the elites, the World Economic Forum, openly champion the great reset and their build back better mantra. Build back better actually means destroy everything that’s not green.
“We’ve seen so-called conservative politicians embrace the net-zero emissions by 2050 pledge, of course knowing they would never be around to see it.”
Mr Bernardi said those who “want more control over your life” have been “emboldened” by how casually people have accepted “the destruction of their liberty” over the past 15 months.
“They know they can push the fear button again and again in order to attain their goals,” he said.
“They are prepared to make you pay any price to help them achieve their ambition.
“Make no mistake, the tipping point is coming, if they succeed there will be no retreat and no surrender, they will brook no dissent, and those that don’t comply will simply be cancelled.”
Mr Bernardi spoke with Sky News host James Morrow about the issue.
“When we look at the way the world has behaved, particularly the western world over the last 15-16 months, you have got to say that there is a hugely totalitarian edge in the air,” Mr Morrow said.
