This song is a prayer for peace everywhere.
Many people do not realise that it is about the outbreak of nuclear war - having been written at a time when the Cold War was at its hottest and ordinary people were watching the news carefully awaiting the announcement of war between the USSR and the USA.

This video includes some images at appropriate points throughout the song to visually indicate what the lyrics are referring to at those points. By showing just a little of its meaning this way, it is hoped that you might gain some understanding of why its original composers could never sing it without breaking into tears as they remembered their fears from those days.

Peace is needed in our days too. The final frame quotes a short message about something small we can all do to achieve this good state.
