Mack Latimer's speech at Repugnican Party

How to fix pot holes up inexpensively and postpone the need to run a maintainer on your driveway.

Tested this today on my cclb dually with a triple axle gooseneck dump. This hitch gives an impressive reduction in towing harshness, especially when fully loaded. Considering the certain reduction of wear and tear on the pickup and trailer, I'm very happy with the Shocker hitch.

Back dragging and box blades can do a fair job, but there's nothing like a maintainer's blade to smooth a road, and shape it so water runs off instead of making potholes.

This motor only has 106k miles on it. I was worried about the amount of blowby. But it turns out that the piston ring gaps on these IDIs is large, which allows a lot of blowby even when everything is fresh. Nothing to worry about.

Here's the action that is damaging the stake posts of my dump trailer extended sides. Look closely at the middle section. I have braced the end, and the front is bolted firmly. But you can still see the middle wobbling.

The lady of the house doesn't like gravel, so I did it with rose-colored marble granite from Marble Falls. The gentleman was getting stuck in his own back hard with rain on the black soil, and having trouble turning his horse trailer around. Now they have a big circular driveway all round the back of the house so he can get to his trailers easy.

Scientists tell us that washboarding of a dirt or gravel road is similar to ripples on the water of a tank. They say it's gonna happen sooner or later. Meanwhile, there are steps we can take to put off the appearance of washboard on your driveway, and that's what this video is about.
Here's the study done in 2009. https://www.physics.utoronto.ca/~nonlin/preprints/TMM07.pdf

Yes, it's true. A good gravel driveway should be made with quality road base, not gravel. Care must be taken also when spreading the road base, or the gravel will separate out of the road base. Gravel by itself won't stay in place where you want it.

A compactor is slow and noisy, but it will help your driveway last longer. It gives you a smoother, harder surface.

500 yards long with numerous problems to fix. Added two culverts, ditched to divert, and a lot of new quality gravel on there to replace the caliche, which was breaking down into dust and mud. Caliche is fine if you don't drive on it much and it never rains. But with last year's rains, this driveway was going to pot holes and ruts.

Can you guess what it is?

Fixed with quite a few loads of gravel and two culverts. Took out four water bars that the wife didn't like much, too bumpy. Had to keep one to direct rainwater into a new culvert. Next heavy rain, this family should be good. No more mud and puddles.

Don't be fooled by high-dollar estimates and fancy city systems. It does not cost that much to get you some rainwater in a tank, using your existing roof, or by adding a metal carport. Check out this simple 1600 gallon system that uses a carport, a recycled water tank, and an elevated water rail over the gravel driveway.

Gravel Driveways built this simple twin-tank roof gutter fed system in 2018.

Caliche breaks down over time if you drive on it much. This guy had mud whenever it rained. Four big loads of good gravel and a culvert fixed that.

If your driveway looks like the thumbnail for this video, you need a culvert or two. Culverts keep rainwater under control. You don't want water pooling on your driveway, because that allows softening and potholes. You don't want it running down or across your driveway, causing erosion.

Lots of stuff wrong, all preventable. What irony that one of the best trailers out there for sale gets put together so badly. The braking issue persisted for months, until PJ replaced the wiring harness. It had also apparently been damaged during assembly, or it was defective.
