JFK: The Conspiracy Myths

For fifty years the truth about the assassination of President John F. Kennedy has been obscured. This book releases us from a crippling distortion of American history.
At 1:00 p.m. on November 22, 1963, President John F. Kennedy was pronounced dead, the victim of a sniper attack during his motorcade through Dallas. That may be the only fact generally agreed upon in the vast literature spawned by the assassination. National polls reveal that an overwhelming majority of Americans (75%) believe that there was a high-level conspiracy behind Lee Harvey Oswald. Many even believe that Oswald was entirely innocent. In this continuously absorbing, powerful, ground-breaking book, Vincent Bugliosi shows how we have come to believe such lies about an event that changed the course of history.

The brilliant prosecutor of Charles Manson and the man who forged an iron-clad case of circumstantial guilt around O. J. Simpson in his best-selling Outrage Bugliosi is perhaps the only man in America capable of writing the definitive book on the Kennedy assassination. This is an achievement that has for years seemed beyond reach. No one imagined that such a book would ever be written: a single volume that once and for all resolves, beyond any reasonable doubt, every lingering question as to what happened in Dallas and who was responsible.

There have been hundreds of books about the assassination, but there has never been a book that covers the entire case, including addressing every piece of evidence and each and every conspiracy theory, and the facts, or alleged facts, on which they are based. In this monumental work, the author has raised scholarship on the assassination to a new and final level, one that far surpasses all other books on the subject. It adds resonance, depth, and closure to the admirable work of the Warren Commission.

Reclaiming History is a narrative compendium of fact, forensic evidence, reexamination of key witnesses, and common sense. Every detail and nuance is accounted for, every conspiracy theory revealed as a fraud on the American public. Bugliosi's irresistible logic, command of the evidence, and ability to draw startling inferences shed fresh light on this American nightmare. At last it all makes sense. 32 pages of illustrations

JFK Assassination Documentary

Who Killed JFK? Facts, Not Fiction revisits the most studied assassination in history. The documentary is hosted by Dan Rather, a field correspondent for CBS at the time of John F. Kennedy's murder. The program examines a series of haunting questions surrounding the event. Who was responsible for the assassination? Was a lone gunman the culprit? Was the crime a Mafia or government plot? Rather takes viewers beyond rumor and speculation to explore the established facts surrounding JFK's death. Eyewitnesses and people who knew Lee Harvey Oswald and other major figures involved recall significant details, sifting the facts in the case from fiction.

Broadcast on November 19, 1993, this CBS Reports episode blended archival footage and personal recollections to probe the assassination of President Kennedy. "Who Killed JFK?" was a response to a CBS poll that found that 9 out of 10 Americans doubted that Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone and 4 out of 5 believed in some sort of cover-up. The report profiled the suspected assassin, Lee Harvey Oswald, and tested various conspiracy theories. Co-produced by the Washington Post, this program was the sixth large-scale CBS investigation of the Kennedy assassination and leaned this time on Gerald Posner’s conspiracy-debunking book Case Closed. In addition to having been on the site of the assassination, Dan Rather had participated in the 1967 and 1975 extensive studies done by CBS Reports and was, as producers Steve Glauber and Christopher Martin recall, very involved in the preparation of the show.

September 11th... Pearl Harbor... the assassination of JFK. Days that forever changed America. But the Kennedy assassination is different: 50 years after it happened, most Americans think we don't know who did it. Now History has conducted the largest nationwide survey ever attempted on the topic to learn exactly what the country believes. Who do Americans suspect was really responsible for JFK's death?

FRONTLINE marks the fiftieth anniversary of the Kennedy assassination with a two-hour reprise of its investigative biography of the man at the center of the political crime of the 20th century. At the heart of the assassination lies the puzzle of Lee Harvey Oswald: Was he the emotionally disturbed lone gunman of the 1964 Warren Commission report? Was he, as the House Select Committee on Assassinations concluded, probably part of a conspiracy on that day in Dallas? Or was he an unwitting fall guy, the patsy, as Oswald himself claimed when he was arrested on November 22, 1963?

Over 20 year ago, in the most comprehensive attempt on American television to penetrate this enduring enigma, FRONTLINE's investigative team spent more than a year reexamining Oswald's life and sifting through the psychological, political, and forensic evidence of his role in the assassination. Traveling to Japan, Russia, Europe, Mexico, Canada, and across the United States, the team uncovered new witnesses, documents, photographs, video and audio recordings of Lee Oswald, many of which had never before been made public.

Lee Harvey Oswald: An American Tragedy

Documentary-makers employ modern forensic techniques to prove that the only bullets fired during the assassination of President John F. Kennedy came from the Texas School Book Depository, thereby confirming the lone gunman theory.

After 40 years of heated debates and accusations, the physical evidence that remains from that day in Dallas is all that can be objectively examined. Watch as experts scrutinize film footage and authentic photos taken the day of the assassination for uncovered clues. The alleged assassin's timeline is broken down to the nearest minute to show where he was at the time of the shooting - and whether or not the "accepted" version of Oswald's plot holds true. Listen in on an obscure audio recording that may shed light on the identity of the true triggerman and examine Exhibit #399 - the so-called "magic bullet," the most controversial piece of evidence. It's an in-depth examination of the unanswered questions, conspiracy theories and physical evidence behind the shots that changed history.

On November 22, 1963, an obscure businessman - Abraham Zapruder - took his 8mm camera to a local park and shot a 26-second home movie. That film, capturing the assassination of President Kennedy, is arguably the most important film of the 20th Century. But did you know there were a dozen other photographers who trained their cameras on the Presidential motorcade? Join the Unsolved History team as they piece together those stills and flickering images to form a complete picture of the tragic events that unfolded in Dallas. Hear from many of the original photographers as they describe their unique viewing angle of the motorcade and the assassination. Follow them as they visit Dealey Plaza, some of them for the first time since that fateful day. Watch as the investigation team recreates some of the original photography to ascertain how modern methods might be better able to eliminate many of the conspiracy theories. Finally, observe as the investigative team uses all available film from that historic moment to assemble a seamless, celluloid timeline documenting the Presidential motorcade - from the jubilant entry into Dealey Plaza, to the tragic, final moments that forever changed the fabric of America's culture.

A year after the Kennedy assassination, Walter Cronkite and Dan Rather were the lead correspondents in the CBS News Extra “November 22nd and the Warren Report.” Aired on Sunday, September 27, 1964, the two-hour special was broadcast a few hours after the Warren Commission issued its report to the president. It featured taped interviews with witnesses of the Kennedy assassination and those closest to Lee Harvey Oswald and explained the findings of the commission. In his memoirs, producer Leslie Midgley recounts how he suggested that CBS compile its own report and have it ready to be aired on the day the official report would be made public. Together with producers Bernie Birnbaum and Jane Bartels and the help of Eddie Barker, the news director of the CBS affiliate in Dallas, CBS presented a comprehensive report on what was known and what was not known about the assassination. The team interviewed dozens of witnesses and retraced Oswald's steps. Midgley recalls how the FBI had a reenactment of the shooting and asked a cameraman from Eddie Barker's station to film through the sight of Oswald's own rifle scope, a piece of film CBS used to open its own report. At Midgley's suggestion, CBS put on a two-hour show, with the first 90 minutes devoted to CBS's own investigation and the last half hour devoted to comparing the commission's official account with theirs. As a result, when NBC and ABC put on shows at 6:30 p.m., when the commission's report was publicly released, CBS had already told the whole story.

This program seeks to explain the enigmatic Oswald using a brand new approach. No other documentary has exclusively traced Oswald's actions in the minutes, hours and days following the events in Dallas. By shifting the focus on that November weekend, we're able to tell a familiar story in an unfamiliar way, providing a refreshing new perspective on Oswald himself, as well as on the Kennedy assassination. Ultimately, we will lay bare the suspect's final two days, revealing why the Dallas police were convinced they had Kennedy's killer. On his way to the police station after his arrest at the Texas Theater, an officer asked Oswald whether or not he killed the president. Oswald snidely replied: "You find out for yourself." Lee Harvey Oswald: 48 Hours to Live eagerly takes up Oswald's 50-year-old challenge.

The assassination of President John F. Kennedy in Dallas on November 22, 1963 left a psychic wound on America that is with us still today. Few Americans then or now accept that a lone, inconsequential gunman could bring down a president and alter history. In that breach, a culture of conspiracy has arisen that points to sinister forces at work in the shadows. Drawing upon rarely seen archival footage and interviews with key participants, Oswald's Ghost takes a fresh look at Kennedy's assassination, the public's reaction to the tragedy, and the government investigations that instead of calming fears lead to a widespread loss of trust in the institutions that govern our society.

The journalist examines the conspiracy theories surrounding the 1963 assassination of President John F. Kennedy, making use of forensic technology, interviews and research based on newly released documents

Fifty years later, what can science tell us about the Kennedy assassination—and the investigations that followed? The 1963 murder, in broad daylight in front of hundreds of witnesses, might seem to be a homicide investigator's best-case scenario. Yet somehow the JFK assassination became a forensic nightmare, plagued by a controversial autopsy and, incredibly, a prime suspect murdered on live television while in police custody, before he could be tried. As a result, today millions of Americans suspect a conspiracy. Now, NOVA launches a fresh investigation into the physical evidence, using state-of-the-art forensics, including laser scanning, new ballistics tests, and a 3D digital reconstruction of the president's skull, all to try to solve the murder of the century.

Lee Harvey Oswald killed President Kennedy, and acted alone. Those were the conclusions of the blue-ribbon Warren Commission in 1964. But America didn't buy it.

So CBS News mounted its own original investigations, gaining important new insights that the Commission didn't - or couldn't - reach on its own. Their extraordinary efforts include building the first-ever full-size replica of the shooting trajectory, with an actual-height sniper tower and a moving target. Was it possible for Oswald to fire all the shots in the time available? Was there a gunman on the grassy knoll? Was there a "magic bullet?" Was there a conspiracy? Walter Cronkite and CBS News pursue the answers and draw their own conclusions in a four-hour special report.
