The sky above my Xarma
at the Xarma Brewery, Crete

Recorded at Castle Suites, Platanias Crete
Wednesday 9 August 2023
"With or without U2"

See the stone set in your eyes
See the thorn twist in your side.
I wait for you.
Sleight of hand and twist of fate
On a bed of nails she makes me wait
And I wait – without you

With or without you
With or without you.

Through the storm, we reach the shore
You gave it all but I want more
And I'm waiting for you –

With or without you
With or without you.
I can't live with or without you.

And you give yourself away
And you give yourself away
And you give, and you give
And you give yourself away.

My hands are tied, my body bruised
She got me with nothing to win
And nothing else to lose.

And you give yourself away
And you give yourself away
And you give, and you give
And you give yourself away.

With or without you
With or without you
I can't live
With or without you.

With or without you
With or without you
I can't live
With or without you
With or without you.

Bjorno - French Parlor Guitar Luthier Hte Collin Paris circa 1830
(It is possible Carulli or Fernando Sor etc may have played this guitar)

Fernando Carulli, born 9 February 1770, was a native of Naples. His father Michele was a prominent Literator, secretary to the delegate of the Neoplitan Jurisdiction. As a boy Fernando was taught music theory and cello by a priest, as was common at the time. His first instrument was the cello, later choosing to dedicate himself to the study and advancement of the guitar in his late teens. Carulli was self-taught owing to the lack of guitar tuition locally in Naples.
After a highly successful tour to Paris Fernando moved to the city in 1809, then known as the 'music-capital' of the world, and remained there for the rest of his life.

Rigel - Voice
Mary Lou - Modern Violin
Grier - Soprano Recorder
Bjorno - English 15 Course Arch Lute

It fell on a sommers day,
While sweete Bessie sleeping laie
In her bowre, on her bed,
Light with curtaines shadowed,
Iamy came: shee him spies,
Opning halfe her heauie eyes.

Iamy stole in through the dore,
She lay slumbring as before;
Softly to her he drew neere,
She heard him, yet would not heare,
Bessie vow'd not to speake,
He resolu'd that dumpe to breake.

First a soft kisse he doth take,
She lay still, and would not wake;
Then his hands learn'd to woo,
She dreamp't not what he would doo,
But still slept, while he smild
To see loue by sleepe beguild.

Iamy then began to play,
Bessie as one buried lay,
Gladly still through this sleight
Deceiu'd in her owne deceit,
And since this traunce begoon,
She sleepes eu'rie afternoone.

Author of Light - Thomas Campion; Poet, Composer & Physician
From Two Books of Ayres circa 1613 [*]
Rigel - Voice
Mary Lou - Modern Violin
Grier - Tenor Recorder
Bjorno - Alto Recorder & English 15 Course Arch Lute,
Luthier Robert Lundberg Portland, Oregon

Author of light, revive my dying spright,
Redeeme it from the snares of all-confounding night.
Lord, light me to thy blessed way:
For, blinde with worldly vaine desires, I wander as a stray.
Sunne and Moone, Starres and underlights I see,
But all their glorious beames are mists and darknes, being compar'd to thee.

Fountaine of health, my soules deepe wounds recure,
Sweet showres of pitty raine, wash my uncleannesse pure.
One drop of thy desired grace
The faint and fading hart can raise, and in joyes bosome place.
Sinne and Death, Hell and tempting Fiends may rage;
But God his owne will guard, and their sharp paines and griefe in time asswage.

* In the nondramatic literature of the late Renaissance, Campion’s contribution holds an ambiguous position. He was neglected for almost two hundred years, but in the late 1800s he was rediscovered by A.H. Bullen, who published the first collected edition and started a resurgence of interest and admiration that would include T.S. Eliot and Ezra Pound. In The Use of Poetry and the Use of Criticism (1933) Eliot calls Campion, “except for Shakespeare ... the most accomplished master of rhymed lyric of his time.” His lyrics and the songs in which he presented them strongly reflect his period’s style, and Davis finds Campion’s influence in the works of such poets as Pound, W.H. Auden, and Robert Creeley.

Pavana No. 6 from El Maestro - Luis Milan
Published in Valencia in 1536 using Wood Block Printing
Bjorno - English 15 Course Arch Lute,
Luthier Robert Lundberg Portland, Oregon [*]

Originally built as a German Baroque Lute, the usual tuning for this instrument is Dm. However, this instrument has a rather colorful history and these days "identifies" as a transvestite thus is tuned as an English Archlute in G.
El Maestro is the first collection of vihuela music published in history and was in part intended for students of the instrument. Pieces are in grades from simple to complex so vihuelists might proceed from elementary to more challenging pieces.
Since there was a wee bit of technical issues the first part was not recorded so I will soon record Pavana No. 6 as intended on a 6 course vihuela.

Never Weather Beaten Sail
The First Booke of Ayres 1613 by Thomas Campion
Rigel - Voice
Mary Lou - Modern Violin
Grier - Tenor Recorder
Bjorno - 8 Course Renaissance Lute Ron Snell Luthier

Commonly referred to as "Lute Songs" such books of songs by Campion and many others in early17th century England were printed using Wood Block Printing and thus became affordable and widely disseminated. Usually in four vocal parts with lute tablature, this genre allowed for solo voice and self accompaniment or with all four parts sung SATB together with lute accompaniment.

Never weather-beaten sail more willing bent to shore.
Never tired pilgrim's limbs affected slumber more,
Than my wearied sprite now longs to fly out of my troubled breast:
O come quickly, sweetest Lord, and take my soul to rest.

Ever blooming are the joys of Heaven's high Paradise.
Cold age deafs not there our ears nor vapour dims our eyes:
Glory there the sun outshines whose beams the blessed only see:
O come quickly, glorious Lord, and raise my sprite to thee!

Come again sweet loue doth now enuite - John Dowland's First Book of Songs 1597

Mary Lou - Modern Violin
Grier - Tenor Recorder
Bjorno - 8 Course Renaissance Lute, Luthier Ron Snell working in Robert Lundberg's Shop, Portland Oregon circa 1980s [https://luth.org/books/historical-lute-construction/]
This number was a little bit of a train wreck on all sides but, all in fun. The audience were exclusively friends and coworkers so, in retrospect I should have said, "Ya all mind if we do a second take?!"
Please also keep in mind this is the first and only full recital Rigel has ever done and the group only had one "dress rehearsal."
