Inspirational Podcasts - The Living Hour

Listen to episode 398 of the Inspirational Living podcast: Ambition, Success, and the Inner Voice of Wisdom. Edited and adapted from Dynamic Thought by Henry Thomas Hamblin.

Inspirational Podcast Excerpt: If you have an ambition, follow it, seek it, concentrate all your energies upon it. Bend and focus all the faculties of your mind towards its accomplishment. Fortunes have never been made (nor high ideals ever been attained) by half-hearted or luke-warm effort. Hit the nail of ambition on the head with all your might; don't tap it like you would a tin-tack. Strive persistently, relying upon the Power within you, and sooner or later great success will be yours.

If you have not yet found your niche, seek for it: "Seek and ye shall find" is as true of the material world as it is of the spiritual. Seek, and keep on seeking, and interior illumination will show you the path, and open up the way.

Get inspired with episode 397 of the Inspirational Living podcast: The Joy of Living Each Day to the Fullest. Edited and adapted from A Way of Life by Sir William Osler.

Inspirational Podcast Excerpt: I have told you that my success philosophy for life is to live for the day only, to disregard thoughts of the future and the past. But now let us speak of the day itself! What first? Be your own day-captain! and sigh not with Job for any mysterious intermediary. Prepare to lay your own firm hand upon the helm. Get into touch with the finite things of the day, and grasp in full enjoyment that sense of mastery in a machine working smoothly.

Join the whole creation of animate things in a deep, heartfelt joy that you are alive, that you see the sun, that you are on this glorious earth which nature has made so beautiful, and which is yours to conquer and to enjoy. Realize, in the words of Browning, that "There’s a world of opportunity for joy spread round about us, meant for us, inviting us."

Get inspired with episode 396 of the Inspirational Living podcast: A Way of Life | A Success Philosophy for Daily Living. Edited and adapted from A Way of Life by Dr. William Osler, a founding professor of Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Inspirational Podcast Excerpt: Every person has a philosophy of life in thought, in word, or in deed — one that has been worked out in themselves unconsciously. Among the very best, they may not know of its existence; with the very worst, they may pride themselves as some kind of paragon. As this philosophy grows with our growth through adulthood, it cannot be taught to the young in formal lectures.

Why then should I trouble you? Because I have a message that may be helpful. It is not philosophical, nor is it strictly moral or religious, and yet in a way it is all three. It is the oldest and the freshest, the simplest and the most useful — so simple that some of you may turn away disappointed.

Get inspired with episode 395 of the Inspirational Living podcast: How to Get What You Want | Making Dreams Come True. Edited and adapted from How to Get What You Want by Orison Swett Marden.

Inspirational Podcast Excerpt: Stop thinking trouble if you want to attract its opposite. Stop thinking poverty if you wish to attract plenty. Refuse to have anything to do with the things you fear, the things you do not want.

A piece of magnetized steel will attract only the products of iron ore. It has no affinity for wood, copper, rubber, or any other substance that has not iron in it. When you were a child you found that your little steel magnet would pick up a needle but not a match or a toothpick. It would draw to itself only those things like itself.

Men and women are human magnets. Just as a steel magnet drawn through a pile of rubbish will pull out only the things which have an affinity for it, so we are constantly drawing to us the things and the people that respond to our thoughts and ideals.

Get inspired with episode 394 of the Inspirational Living podcast: Wake Me Up! How to Get the Day Started Right. Edited and adapted from Nerve Control and How to Gain It by H. Addington Bruce.

Inspirational Podcast Excerpt: HAVE you ever noticed the behavior of your family cat when it awakes from a sound sleep? Unless awakened by something that frightens them, they don’t immediately dash away from the chair, sofa, window-nook, or other cozy resting-place that they have been occupying. On the contrary, before starting into full activity they go through a regular ceremonial. They rise slowly, yawn, arch their back, stretch their legs — then they thoroughly relaxes their muscles. After this, they are ready for whatever seems best to them to do.

Other animals — dogs, for example — behave somewhat similarly when first coming out of sleep. Observing this, a friend of mine, a well-known educator, has suggested that it contains a hint of practical importance to human beings.

Transform Your Life in 30 Days with The Majesty Program: http://livinghour.org/majesty/

Get inspired with episode 393 of the Inspirational Living podcast: Beauty, Truth & The Upanishads. Edited and adapted from The Realisation of Life by Rabindranath Tagore.

Inspirational Podcast Excerpt: Things in which we do not take joy are either a burden upon our minds to be got rid of at any cost, or they are useful and therefore in temporary and partial relation to us, becoming burdensome when their utility is lost — or they are like wandering vagabonds, loitering for a moment on the outskirts of our recognition, and then passing on. A thing is only completely our own when it is a thing of joy to us.

The greater part of this world is to us as if it were nothing. But we cannot allow it to remain so, for it belittles our own self. The entire world is given to us, and all our powers have their final meaning in the faith that (by their help) we are to take possession of our inheritance.

But what is the function of our sense of beauty in this process? Is it there to separate truth into strong lights and shadows, and bring it before us to distinguish beauty from ugliness? If that were so, then we would have had to admit that this sense of beauty creates a dissension in our universe, and sets up a wall of hindrance across the highway of communication that leads from every thing to all things.

Listen to episode 392 of the Inspirational Living podcast: Fight Fatigue | Working with More Energy. Edited and adapted from Nerve Control and How to Gain It by H. Addington Bruce.

Inspirational Podcast Excerpt: Recognize that your work is your life. Don't dread work. But do dread making yourself unfit for work. Of course, it is a mistake to force one's self to work when really fatigued. But it is important to remember that there is such a thing as false fatigue, and that to stop working when one merely thinks they are tired may have the unpleasant consequence of setting up a habit of not working at all.

Now, having spoken of false fatigue, it is important to gain a clear understanding of real fatigue — nature's warning to tell us that we should for the time being stop work and have a rest. While fatigue is an inevitable result of hard work, and while rest is always necessary to overcome fatigue, it should be noted that there are certain things that accelerate the onset of fatigue. Malnutrition is one of these.

Get inspired with episode 391 of the Inspirational Living podcast: The Power of Visualization | The Genie of the Mind. Edited and adapted from The Secret of the Ages by Robert Collier.

Inspirational Podcast Excerpt: There is a very real law of cause and effect which makes the dream of the dreamer come true. It is the law of visualization — the law that calls into being in this outer material world everything that is real in the inner world. Imagination pictures the thing you desire. VISION idealizes it. It reaches beyond the thing that IS, into the conception of what can be. Imagination gives you the picture. Vision gives you the impulse to make the picture your own.

Make your mental image clear enough, picture it vividly in every detail, and the Genie-of-your-Mind will speedily bring it into being as an everyday reality.

This law holds true of everything in life. There is nothing you can rightfully desire that cannot be brought into being through visualization.

Get inspired with episode 390 of the Inspirational Living podcast: How to Attract All the Good Things of Life. Edited and adapted from The Secret of the Ages by Robert Collier.

Inspirational Podcast Excerpt: FIRST came the Stone Age, when life was for the strong of arm and the fleet of foot. Then there was the Iron Age — and while life was more precious, still the strong lorded it over the weak. Later came the Golden Age, and riches took the place of strength — but the poor found little choice between the slave drivers' whips of olden days and the grim weapons of poverty and starvation.

Now we are entering a new age (the Mental Age) when every person can be their own master, when poverty and circumstance no longer hold power, and the lowliest individual in the land can win a place side by side with the highest.

To those who do not know the resources of mind, these will sound like outlandish statements; but science proves beyond question that in the well-springs of every person’s mind are unplumbed depths — undiscovered deposits of energy, wisdom, and ability. Sound these depths, bring these treasures to the surface, and you gain an astounding wealth of new power.

Transform Your Life in 30 Days with The Majesty Program: http://livinghour.org/majesty/

Get inspired with episode 389 of the Inspirational Living podcast: Meditations on Creative & Joyful Living. Edited and adapted from Happiness Road by Alice Hegan Rice.

Inspirational Podcast Excerpt: There is no better way of directing our thoughts than by intelligent use of the imagination. By clearly visualizing our ideals and holding them before us to the exclusion of all baser and more ignoble desires, we best attain our desired end. Virtue, like vice, is first conceived in the mind — and imagination is a more powerful factor than will-power in character building.

Whatever discouragement we may feel as to our ability to be of use in the world should be minimized when we realize that no one has ever had our exact inheritance and environment, and that we may be fitted to perform a task no one else can accomplish. Such a thought fires the imagination and makes us eager to discover just what our peculiar mission in the world may be.

Get inspired with episode 388 of the Inspirational Living podcast: Overcoming Loneliness & Enjoying Solitude. Edited and adapted from Happiness Road by Alice Hegan Rice.

Inspirational Podcast Excerpt: A distinction should be made between being alone and being lonely. Solitude, if rightly used, becomes not only a privilege but a necessity. Only a superficial soul fears to fraternize with itself. Our unaccompanied hours may not only be times of refreshment, but opportunities to digest our past experiences, and make intelligent plans for the future.

The realization that God needs us as much as we need God, gives us a new sense of our responsibility. God needs our lips to speak the word of comfort, our ears to hear the cry of distress, our hearts to respond to the pain of the world, our hands and feet to execute plans of helpfulness and love.

Get inspired with 387 of the Inspirational Living podcast: How to Travel on Happiness Road. Edited and adapted from Happiness Road by Alice Hegan Rice.

Inspirational Podcast Excerpt: What is the true nature of this happiness people have lived and died for? We know one thing for certain. Happiness is not a mere temporary, selfish pleasure that excites and exhilarates for a moment, but it lies in a state of mind. Also we know that there is a technique in attaining it. Yet while we devote years to the study of the arts, we give little attention to the most important of all the arts: that of achieving a happy life.

There are brilliant men and women the world over who have attained greatness in their respective fields, yet who in their secret souls are dissatisfied, thwarted, and disillusioned. They have been so busy achieving personal ambitions that they have overlooked the supremely enjoyable obligation of finding happiness.

Get inspired with episode 385 of the Inspirational Living podcast: Motivation for Confidence, Courage & Leadership. Edited an adapted The Conquest of Worry by Orison Swett Marden.

Inspirational Podcast Excerpt: Even though you may make mistakes, if you are honest enough to acknowledge them and big enough to profit by them, your voice will always carry weight. If you have an invincible soul, it doesn’t matter much what happens to you. It doesn’t affect the reality of you, the truth of your being, because it is divine, constant, and not for sale.

When you are conscious that you are in partnership with the Creator, the source of all strength, there is nothing that can happen to the things about you which will really affect you. You will keep your poise, your Serenity, no matter what may befall you.

The tonic of courage comes also from thorough preparation. The surgeon is confident that they can perform a difficult and dangerous operation, only because of their long years of preparation. The consciousness of being an expert, a specialist in your line of work, able to do that which you undertake, perhaps a little bit better than those about you, strengthens your courage wonderfully.

Get inspired with episode 88 of the Inspirational Living podcast: How to Simplify Life and Find Joy. Edited and adapted from The Simple Life by Charles Wagner.

Podcast Excerpt: Wherever life is simple and sane, true pleasure accompanies it as fragrance does uncultivated flowers. Even when this life hard, hampered, devoid of all things ordinarily considered as the very conditions of pleasure, the rare and delicate plant, joy, flourishes there. It springs up between the flags of the pavement, on an arid wall, in the fissure of a rock. We ask ourselves how it comes, and whence: but it lives.

No one seems to doubt the immense human interest attached to joy. It is a sacred flame that must be fed, and it throws a splendid radiance over life. The individual who takes pains to foster it accomplishes a work as profitable for humanity as those who build bridges, pierce tunnels, invent technology, or cultivate the ground. To order one’s life so as to keep (amid toils and suffering) the faculty of happiness, and be able to propagate it in a sort of salutary contagion among one’s fellow citizens, is to do a work of fraternity in the noblest sense.

Get inspired with episode 327 of the Inspirational Living Podcast: Rumi Poetry | Rumi Quotes of Love and Life. A special sample episode from our patron series Our Sunday Talks.

Podcast Excerpt: Whatever you are seeking, is seeking you. What is planted in each person’s soul will sprout. There is nothing outside of yourself. Look within. Everything you want is there — you are that.

Until you remain blind and deaf I will be invisible. Look for the answer inside your question. Eyes cannot see you. You are the source of sight.

Whatever I was looking for was always you. Your calling my name is my reply. Your longing for me is my message to you. I see my beauty in you. I become a mirror that cannot close its eyes to your longing.

Be foolishly in love, because love is all there is.

Sit, be still, and listen. Hear the passage into silence and be that. You are the seeker, the goal, and seeking itself. Only from the heart can you touch the sky.

There is a window from one Heart to another Heart. Purify your eyes, and see the pure world. Your life will then fill with radiant forms.

ALL that you achieve (and all that you fail to achieve) is the direct result of your own thoughts. Your weaknesses and strengths are your own. They are brought about by you and can only be changed by you, never by someone else. Your happiness and suffering evolve from within. As you think, so you are. As you continue to think, so you remain.

“Today’s scientists have substituted mathematics for experiments. And they wander off through equation after equation, eventually building a structure which has no relation to reality.”
