Kaikki pelimannimusiikin harrastajat tuntevat kurikkalaisen viulistin Gabriel ”Kaapo” Syrjälän (1839–1918). Tai jos eivät tunne miestä, tuntevat he ainakin hänen nimissään kulkevan Syrjälän Kaapon polskan.
Syrjälän omaa soittoa heistä tuskin kukaan on sitä vastoin päässyt kuulemaan. Tähän asetelmaan on päädytty siitä huolimatta, että kansanmusiikintutkija A. O. Väisänen äänitti Syrjälän soittoa parlografilla, fonografin kehittyneellä versiolla, kohtuullisen kokoelman jo vuonna 1917. Syrjälän soitot ovat jääneet julkaisematta. Ne ovat myös pysytelleet ensin muissa kokoelmissa, sitten SKS:ssa ”arkiston peitossa” luetteloinnin ulkopuolella koko olemassaolonsa ajan – yli 100 vuotta. Tässä blogikirjoituksessa äänitteet nostetaan esiin ensimmäistä kertaa ja juhlistetaan näin SKS:n arkiston vanhimpia ääniteaineistoja seuran 190-vuotisjuhlavuoden kunniaksi.
Pelimannimusiikin äänittäminen 1900-luvun toisella vuosikymmenellä Suomessa ei ollut itsestäänselvyys. Suomalaiset kielentutkijat olivat ottaneet fonografin tutkimuksen apuvälineeksi 1890-luvulla ja heitä seurasivat 1900-luvun ensimmäisellä kymmenluvulla kansanperinteen ja -musiikintutkijat. Fonografi ja parlografi olivat ainoita äänityslaitteita 1930-luvun lopulle saakka, jolloin otettiin käyttöön pikalevytystekniikka. Tutkijat suuntasivat fonografeineen Suomen itäisiin osiin, Venäjän Karjalaan sekä sukukansojen pariin. Onneksi oli muutamia niitäkin tutkijoita, suomenruotsalaisen pelimannimusiikin tallentamisen uranuurtajien ohella, jotka olivat kiinnostuneita läntisten kansanmusiikkiperinteiden äänittämisestä.
SKS:n fonogrammikokoelmien luetteloa silmäiltäessä huomio kiinnittyy nopeasti Armas Otto Väisäseen (1890–1969). Väisänen oli monen toimen mies, joka parikymppisenä nuorukaisena 1910-luvulla teki merkittävän elämäntyön kansanmusiikin tallentajana. Samalla tavalla kuin Väisästä voidaan pitää keruidensa vuoksi kansanomaisen kanteleensoiton pelastajana, on hänen roolinsa pelimannisoiton tallentajana ja välittäjänä myös merkittävä. Toki pelimannisävelmien osalta Väisäsenkin aineiston määrä on suppeahko. Hän ehti kuitenkin äänittää paria kymmentä pelimannisoittajaa Limingasta Kirkkonummelle ja Kurikasta Savonrannalle saakka. Äänitykset tehtiin usein Helsingissä pelimannien vieraillessa Väisäsen 1930-luvulla toimittamassa Yleisradion Puolisen tuntia kansanmusikkia -ohjelmassa.
Fonogrammien myöhempään kohtaloon vaikutti se, että niiden rooli oli arkistoinnissa välillinen: laulut ja soitot arkistoitiin SKS:n kokoelmiin teksti- ja nuottikäsikirjoituksina, eikä fonogrammeja luetteloitu omana kokoelmanaan aineistoksi. Fonogrammeista tehtiin ensimmäiset nauhakopiot vasta 1960-luvulla. Ja kun 1980-luvun alussa fonogrammeista tehtiin tuoreella tekniikalla uudet nauhakopiot, kopioitiin SKS:n kokoelmiin fonogrammeja myös tutkijoiden henkilökohtaisista kokoelmista ja esimerkiksi Kalevalaseuran kokoelmista. Jälkimmäisellä kopiointikerralla mukana olivat myös Väisäsen Kaapo Syrjälältä vuonna 1917 äänittämät soitot. Puutteellisten tietojensa vuoksi äänitteistä ei päätynyt kopionauhoihin sisältötietoa. Äänitteet jäivät lepäämään nauhalle odottaen parempia aikoja.

Ta: "Yes. We've had other things to do. My busy affairs, they're very much this sort of... Classical music singing and studying at this moment. So we've arranged time tables so that the rest of the spring has to be quiet like so."

Tu: "And in addition, half of our band were serving in the army [Finnish conscription service] until recently..."
Ta: "That too."
Tu: "From there, it's of course hard to get anywhere."
A: "Yeah, the situation is quite peculiar as a whole in that there is a female lead singer in this type of band, let alone a trained one. How did a solution like this take off then?"
