👩🏻‍🦱 Thanks to all of you who took part in the hair care challenge! I have loved getting to meet so many of you through email, and have been blown away by the before and after pictures so many of you have shared with me! 💕

#haircare #haircaretips #haircarechallenge #naturalhaircare

👩🏻‍🦱 Exciting announcement! I am gearing up to begin selling my cult classic herbal hair growth oil in just a few months! To be the first to find out when this amazing product is live, comment “HAIR OIL” below! I will send you a link to my blog where you can input your email to be put on this special list! You can also find the link in my linktree!

💕 I have been using this month’s hair growth challenge to give a real try out of historical haircare. So washing my hair much less frequently than was my norm (once a week) and instead relying on dry cleansing methods like natural bristle brushing. I have also been regularly using my herbal hair growth oil on my scalp to boost hair growth and thickness, and taking good care of my ends.

💕 For those of you who are wondering, yes, this method of haircare means that I am not wearing my hair curly - but for me, this is irrelevant because I am wearing my hair up in protective styles everyday anyway.

💕 My hair has been more manageable, shiny, and much easier to style in pretty updo’s. My scalp is also MUCH happier with the frequent boar bristle brushing, and my ends which are usually dry are feeling more moisturized.

#haircare #hairoil #naturalhaircare #naturalhair

💇🏻‍♀️Newsflash: you don’t need to be constantly washing, and wet-styling your hair in order for it to grow and be healthy. When I started following a historically inspired hair care routine 7 years ago, my hair was chin length and had never been able to grow very long or healthy. Now, my hair is nearly down to my thighs, and very healthy indeed. Lately, I have only been washing it once a month!

💕Did you know that historical people were pros when it came to dry-cleansing hair? Yes, you heard that right. It is possibly to clean hair when it is completely dry. One of the main ways historical people did this was by using boar bristle brushes, special combing techniques, and generally keeping the hair in protective styles or entirely covered.

💕If I had not have made this mindset shift, I would not have been able to grow my thick, curly hair this long. In fact, I probably wouldn’t have even wanted to grow my hair this long if I was continuing the high-maintenance routine of my “curly girl” years.

And if you are wondering, “what’s the point of growing long hair if you wear it up all the time?” My next video is actually about that VERY topic! Stay tuned!

In this video, I will finally be answering THIS question about my hair! The one I have been avoiding answering for a while now, even though many of you have asked it. We will be answering the question of “what’s the point of having long hair if you are just going to wear it up every day?”

In my typical fashion, I not only will answer this question but deal with some of the hidden preconceptions that are built into this.

Newsflash: Making this mindset shift was one of the biggest foundational changes that allowed me to change my haircare routine in order to grow long and healthy hair. Enjoy!

Boar bristle brushes are one of the most underrated hair growth tools! This is the second winter in a row that I've been inspired to get more consistent with my boar bristle hair brushing. As a curly haired person, it can be easy to think "maybe it's just not for me." But every time I begin using it again, I am re-convinced of its unbelievable benefits! Regular boar bristle brushing has gotten my hair out of an awfully tangled rut I had been in, and brought increased shine, moisture, and manageability.

More often than I care to admit, I have been really letting the busyness of my life get in the way of taking regular, consistent good care of my hair. Which meant that when the time came to wash my hair, it was so tangled and so matted that it would literally take me an entire day of working through my hair in sections to get it done, which just made me dread washing my hair and caring for my hair all the more.

This hair care challenge, I've been really just honing in on being consistent with regular hair care, even if life feels really busy. And I've been learning a lot of new things too about what my hair likes and what it doesn't like and trying things that I had not otherwise been doing consistently that I think I might want to add to my daily consistent hair care routine in the future. And I'll be sharing that to you soon.

Let's be real, the "me" you see in most of my videos isn't the "me" you'd see walking around my house most days, ha! Part of what I love about long hair AND this natural, historical hair care routine is just how minimalist my daily hair care can be. As long as my hair is kept detangled and moisturized with oils and butters, it's golden. I have been using this DIY hair strengthening spray recently, made with aloe vera power and amla, steeped in water and then cooled and strained. It is amazing and keeping my hair strong! Recipe is in the post prior to this one ☺️ Thanks Jessica for the cream! I've been using it on my face and my hair ♥️

👩‍🦰 Are you in? I will be using this month to get more consistent on giving my hair the daily TLC it needs. Dry finger detangling, applying oils and butters to my ends (because, Canadian winter, ahem) and taking care of myself. I will also be using this time to get back into regular use of Ayurvedic herbs, because I have a few more split ends than I would like and I am going to use a DIY Ayurvedic hair strengthening spritz on my ends to heal and prevent this. I just made this with two herbs I happened to have on hand - amla and aloe vera powder. I didn't follow a recipe but it was approximately 2 tsp amla, 1 tsp aloe vera, and 2 cups water. I poured this through a paper towel to filter out the sediment and put into a spray bottle. 💕

The next aspect of this hair care challenge is going to be using apple cider vinegar rinses. Or alternatively, if your hair really doesn't like the vinegar or you'd rather not use it, you can also use aloe vera juice as a rinse. Both of these rinses are slightly acidic, which is important for a final hair rinse. This is the last step you do before getting out of the shower.

Although I do tend to rinse out the vinegar before I actually do get out of the shower, some people don't. But the reason it's important is because hair's ph is naturally somewhat acidic. And so sometimes, especially if we're using something like clay to wash our hair, clay is very mineral rich, and it's therefore more alkaline. And so as a final step, we want to bring our hair back to its naturally somewhat acidic ph.

And that's going to help to seal off the cuticles, make your hair appear more shiny, as well as more soft and more manageable. And it helps to minimize tangles as well. It just basically creates a nice, clean slate for your hair, for whatever other styling products you might do after that point.

👩‍🦱
The first method that we're going to be using in our hair care challenge is using clay washes in our hair, likely instead of shampoo. I myself use rhassoul clay. That is the type of clay that I have been using for the past seven years to grow my own hair out so long. So that is the type of clay that I'm going to recommend starting out with.

However, if you have difficulty accessing it or if your hair is extremely oily, then you can use bentonite clay as well. But basically we mix a certain amount of clay. I usually do about a third of a cup of clay powder to two cups of liquid. I mostly just use water, although you can do half water and half aloe vera juice if you want to be more fancy.

And then you can also add in some essential oils that promote hair growth and scalp health like lavender and rosemary, maybe tea tree, maybe peppermint. You apply it to your hair as I show in my hair washing video.

I found a historical Edwardian period hair care manual that talks about it being very common for 13 year old girls, almost universally, to have waist length hair. That's not something we necessarily see a whole lot of today. And if you take that forward, it means that by the time they're an adult, their hair would be quite longer.

So they knew something that we don't about growing long hair. And that was what first drove of my impulse to look more into how they care for their hair and how it drastically differs from our modern way of looking at hair care and specifically hair hygiene.

Did you know that frequently washing your hair can actually be harmful to our hair health? Does this mean we have to have dirty hair? We will be myth-busting in this video about how washing hair with water is NOT the only way to keep it clean. We’ll cover other ways that historical people used to “dry cleanse” hair without the need for shampoo and water.

In this video we’ll also talk about some dangers of modern conventional shampoos, as well as problems with wet detangling hair, and with the curly girl method. Shhh - we’ll also learn some shocking facts about how often historical people bathed, and what we can learn from that for hair care.

When you're mixing your clay wash, you DO NOT want it to have the mud like consistency of a clay face mask. That was a mistake I made myself when I first started clay washing about eight years ago. The problem with thick clay washes is that it's very difficult to rinse them out of your hair, and it can be an overload of nourishment and minerals for your hair, potentially leave it feeling a bit over strengthened. And because it's difficult to rinse out when it's thick, it can leave a powdery sort of clay residue that can dry and leave your hair a bit stiff. So you want a very watery clay wash. A good place to start is to not go any more than one quarter cup of clay to two cups of liquid. And in fact, you could probably even start out with a bit more watery of a mixture than that. It's amazing at how potently cleansing this clay wash can be, even when it's very watery.

👩‍🦱
It’s an essential step to pair your clay wash, or whatever your no poo method is, with an apple cider vinegar rinse. It completes the cleansing process of your hair.

This is especially helpful for me because I do oil treatments before I wash my hair, and so the apple cider vinegar rinse is like an insurance policy to make sure that my hair is completely degreased since vinegar is a natural degreaser. And it also leaves the hair nice and soft.

An important practical thing regarding haircare that you can implement right now that will help you retain length is the practice of sealing your ends with a light oil after a shower.

What this does is the oil creates a seal around the moisture in your hair. And that's what you want because ends are the most liable to become brittle and snap off. Therefore, you really want to seal in that moisture.
