I have long been singing and performing this song, and am happy to share it today. It's a classic by Bruce Cockburn, a great Canadian lyricist and songwriter. It was covered by the Barenaked Ladies (BNL) in the early 90s and made it extremely, quintessentially Canadian in their video, so it's a great introduction to my "Songs for Canada" theme.

As to the song's meaning, Bruce Cockburn wrote it in the midst of the Cold War and under that constant sense of threat and dread. He saw a couple at the park and built the song around the idea of the courage it takes to love in the midst of whatever distressing events are taking place--to choose to be a lover in a dangerous time.

Special thanks to Fr. Darryl Millette for the sound & video. Filmed in Saskatoon, Canada.

The great Sir Roger Scruton, English philosopher--a hero and example of courage in his own sphere. I am very happy to share him with you through my simple tribute and discussion. He was a kind, gentlemanly example of intellectual rigour, and it is a sadness and grief that he died in January of cancer. But he leaves us with much wisdom in his many works. I hope to populate my future library with his writings!

Lyrics below.
I reached out to Sir Roger Scruton (who recently left us after a battle with cancer) via email quite a few years back, and he was kind enough to write back. I wrote about that experience recently a little in Dappled Things, which I'd love you to read in full here:

https://dappledthings.org/16512/i-wrote-a-letter-to-roger-scruton/

Aside from the few short exchanges, his work was deeply formative for me as an artist, likely playing a large role in stoking my courage to continue on the way of authenticity and beauty in my craft rather than chasing the dictates of modern popular culture. I am deeply grateful.

This is the first song of my #SongsofCourage series.

These are treacherous times for many of us, especially with the coronavirus things and so many concerns about our health, our finances, our families, the role of the government, the economy, and questions about how the world will look when all of this comes to a close. This song is intended to bring peace to anxiety, courage to weakness, faith to doubt, hope to despair, love to loneliness, and perhaps comfort in a time of heaviness, confusion, and depression for many.

I wrote this song after visiting a beautiful ancient Cathedral in the Netherlands in June, and there learning that the title, "Star of the Sea," attributed to Mary--the ubiquitous religious historical figure--may actually have been a mistranslation of "drop of the sea." I found it fascinating. Historical religious texts, at the very least, hold deep symbolic meaning for all of us, especially in trying times.

Due to some technical issues, I will circle back to finish the #SocialismSongs series after this new theme closes--one more song and one more commentary.

This is more of a current events video, but not totally out of keeping with the #SocialismSongs series. Basically, I try to explain why a large portion of the population was initially reticent to jump into what they were perceiving as hysteria and fear. I think it's mostly that we are overwhelmed by or tired/distrusting of the tone of fear in so much of our civil discourse via news and social media. Of course, some people are worried about the danger of government set up/control and conspiracy, and I discuss how socialism or other corrupt systems have rarely been put in place without there first being a crisis of some sort.

Just so it's clear: at this point, I am taking this seriously for the sake of the vulnerable population and medical workers. I think that's wise, especially after hearing the stories and update coming out of Italy.

One of the main takeaways is that I hope we can be more generous in the way we see each other and have more mutually beneficial good faith conversations about real things. I am being straightforward that I approach these questions as a conservative, Catholic millennial, but my desire is for everyone, especially in a democratic society, to become more intellectually rigorous and honest with regard to the questions that matter and the facts that come.

While I've said I don't approach these things as an academic, it's probably important to mention that I have a fairly extensive academic background and have done a lot of reading over the years, and I also have many personal friends with their own testimonies about government control/socialism/communism in their home countries.

Scroll for words to the poem. || In the midst of the coronavirus scare, and all of my heavy discussion about socialism, I decided to post a reading of a favourite poem of mine (the first one I ever memorized) by Gerard Manley Hopkins: "God's Grandeur." Beauty calms and heals. No matter how bad it gets, it does nobody any good to give into the sensationalism and hysteria. Do we always just feel and fear everything we are told to feel and fear?

This felt "on theme" with the socialism things because it's a poem fundamentally about hope -- about no matter how weird and hard and dark things get, the sun comes up and brings a new days worth facing and fighting for. It speaks to the weariness of humanity, and our increasing distance from nature. We need to know that we are fighting FOR something--for goodness, beauty, truth--not just fighting against things.

Yes, this poem hinges on a theme of faith, as much of the great works of history do. But it offers much to even the person without faith--it's beautiful, it's true, and it hearkens to the higher and transcendent - something we all crave. We deprive ourselves of the heights of human accomplishment if we write things off because they have religious themes.

It occurs to me that I post at the risk of this seeming cliched. In certain circles, this poem is so often quoted or used to indicate your "education" and "depth." But it also occurs to me that many more people have never heard or read it, and that's why I post anyway. It's beautiful and worth sharing for a new audience that may not know it.

I love that the birds (occasional peacock, too) and the rain decided to feature.

I am also finishing a poem about Holodomor which I hope to publish in this #SocialismSongs series at some point.

This is part of an ongoing "song theme" series I'll be doing throughout 2020 with regular commentary. ..

What is socialism? What exactly happened in Venezuela? Is "democratic socialism" the same as the socialism veering toward communism, and its wreckage that we are seeing in Venezuela? Could it ever come to our countries? Do we know what we stand to lose?

Venezuela is a big warning to us. As a millennial Catholic conservative, I'll be sharing more songs and thoughts on this topic in the coming weeks. As a Canadian often working in the US and who has friends all over the world, this is something that has been burning in my heart to talk and sing about for years. Now is the time. There is so much work to do, so much to be said.

Fun fact? The virus reference in this song came to me before the Coronavirus started threatening. They are eerily tied up--at the very least, deeply metaphorically. Lyrics below.

P.S. I'm not always hyper-serious. We'll see how things go here!

"Venezuela"

Venezuela..

In 10 years flat
The virus spread
Don’t mention it on the news,
But there isn’t any bread

Colourful dancers
Beautiful women
Vibrance, I remember
Now survival-living

We get just what we ask for
Even if it’s tragic

The government loves you
Takes everything you have
Promises the future
And gives you nothing back

They’re spouting off their lies

"Don't Dream It's Over" by Crowded House

There is freedom within
There is freedom without
Try to catch the deluge in a paper cup
There's a battle ahead
Many battles are lost
But you'll never see the end of the road
While you're traveling with me

Hey now, hey now
Don't dream it's over
Hey now, hey now
When the world comes in
They come, they come
To build a wall between us
We know they won't win

Now I'm towing my car
There's a hole in the roof
My possessions are causing me suspicion but there's no proof
In the paper today
Tales of war and of waste
But you turn right over to the T.V. page

Hey now, hey now
Don't dream it's over
Hey now, hey now
When the world comes in
They come, they come
To build a wall between us
We know they won't win

Now I'm walking again
To the beat of a drum
And I'm counting the steps to the door of your heart
Only shadows ahead
Barely clearing the roof
Get to know the feeling of liberation and release

Hey now, hey now
Don't dream it's over
Hey now, hey now
When the world comes in
They come, they come
To build a wall between us
You know they won't win

Don't let them win
Hey now, hey now

Beautiful Blue by Holly McNarland

From the picture on the wall
To the bed post that touched them all
This is where I live
This is where I do my screamin'

How do you say I love you in so many other ways?
This is where I live, this is what I do best

Dreamin' with so much ugliness
Wakin' up to all this beautiful blue
Beautiful you

From the time I walked in
To the point that we're both arguin'
This is how I live
This is where I start screamin'

How do you say I've always felt this way?
This is where I live, this is what I do best

Dreamin' with so much ugliness
Wakin' up to all this beautiful blue
Is beautiful you

Dreamin' under this ugliness
Wakin' up to all this beautiful blue

Dreamin' under this ugliness
Wakin' up to all this beautiful blue
Beautiful you, beautiful you

Sweet, the Gentle Night

Sweet, the gentle night, entwined within the sky:
Place your heart inside the heart of hearts, your inner eye;
Place the day's dark alleys in the centre of
The peace you know (you also know dissolves the dark with love).

Think of stars afloat in perfect harmony;
Think of all the whirling world which waits for you to see!--
But not before you take your sleep in lilting dreams;
Not before the sun wakes up and puts the moon to sleep.

Special thanks to the Saskatoon Children's Choir, under the direction of Phoebe Voigts, where I first learned this haunting, incredible song as a child.

Frobisher Bay, written by James Gordon

Cold is the Arctic Sea
Far are your arms from me
Long will this winter be
Frozen in Frobisher Bay
Frozen in Frobisher Bay

"One more whale," our captain cried
"One more whale and well beat the ice."
But the winter star was in the sky
The seas were rough the winds were high.

Deep were the crashing waves
That tore our whaler's mast away
Dark are these sunless days
Waiting for the ice to break.

Strange is a whaler's fate
To be saved from the raging waves
Only to waste away
Frozen in this lonely grave.

We spoke like lovers with the years long gone
Every word between was like the flicker of a song
Oh, I loved you then and oh, I love you now

Only just a moment did you take to win my trust
But I cut myself away like the way I knew I must
Oh, I loved you then and oh, I love you now
Oh, I loved you then and oh, I love you now

This heart was tried and true
With only ever you
The memory black and blue
But sweet because of you
I know still what I knew
That only ever you
Would ever only be
Only ever you

I know that love is often letting go
But how do you release the blood from in your bones?
Oh, I loved you then and oh, I love you now
Oh, I loved you then and oh, I love you now

{Chorus}
So this is how it feels
To love without reserve
This is how it feels
To love

{Chorus}

Oh, I loved you then and oh, I love you now
Oh, I loved you then and oh, I love you now
Oh, I loved you then and oh, I love you now

"Both Sides Now"

Rows and flows of angel hair
And ice cream castles in the air
And feather canyons everywhere
I've looked at clouds that way

But now they only block the sun
They rain and snow on everyone
So many things I would have done
But clouds got in my way

I've looked at clouds from both sides now
From up and down, and still somehow
It's cloud illusions I recall
I really don't know clouds at all

Moons and Junes and Ferris wheels
The dizzy dancing way you feel
As every fairy tale comes real
I've looked at love that way

But now it's just another show
You leave 'em laughing when you go
And if you care, don't let them know
Don't give yourself away

I've looked at love from both sides now
From give and take, and still somehow
It's love's illusions I recall
I really don't know love at all

Tears and fears and feeling proud
To say "I love you" right out loud
Dreams and schemes and circus crowds
I've looked at life that way

But now old friends are acting strange
They shake their heads, they say I've changed
Well something's lost, but something's gained
In living every day

I've looked at life from both sides now
From win and lose and still somehow
It's life's illusions I recall
I really don't ..

Lyrics:
"Over The Rainbow"

Somewhere over the rainbow way up high
There's a land that I heard of once in a lullaby
Somewhere over the rainbow skies are blue
And the dreams that you dare to dream really do come true

Someday I'll wish upon a star
And wake up where the clouds are far
Behind me
Where troubles melt like lemon drops
Away above the chimney tops
That's where you'll find me

Somewhere over the rainbow bluebirds fly
Birds fly over the rainbow
Why then, oh, why can't I?

If happy little bluebirds fly
Beyond the rainbow
Why, oh, why can't I?

Lyrics:

"Foolish Games"
(Album Version by Jewel)

You took your coat off and stood in the rain
You're always crazy like that
And I watched from my window
Always felt I was outside looking in on you
You're always the mysterious one with
Dark eyes and careless hair
You were fashionably sensitive
But too cool to care
You stood in my doorway, with nothing to say
Besides some comment on the weather

Well in case you failed to notice
In case you failed to see
This is my heart bleeding before you
This is me down on my knees, and

These foolish games are tearing me apart
And your thoughtless words are breaking my heart
You're breaking my heart

You're always brilliant in the morning
Smoking your cigarettes and talking over coffee
Your philosophies on art, Baroque moved you
You loved Mozart; and you'd speak of your loved ones
As I clumsily strummed my guitar

You'd teach me of honest things
Things that were daring, things that were clean
Things that knew what an honest dollar did mean
I hid my soiled hands behind my back
Somewhere along the line, I must have gone
Off track with you

Excuse me, think I've mistaken you for somebody else
Somebody who gave a damn
Somebody more like myself

And these foolish games are tearing me
You're tearing me
You're tearing me apart
And your thoughtless words are breaking my heart
You're breaking my heart

You took your coat off
Stood in the rain
You're always crazy like that

Lyrics:

"Weary" by Kay Clarity

Rest your weary eyes
Don't look outside
Just for now
You can hide

Let the rain come down
Just hear its sound
You'll be alright
You will be soon

Uncertain though you've been
You'll find your way, of this I'm sure
Unbending as it's been, you'll find a home

Through the broken leaves
And scattered trees
There is a pull
To set you free

And when you're ready, dear
And shed your fear
You'll find yourself
And heaven here

Uncertain though you've been
You'll find your way, of this I'm sure
Unbending as it's been you'll find a home

But in this deep
Just keep your sleep
Rest a while
In weary dreams

Uncertain though you've been
You'll find your way, of this I'm sure
Unbending as it's been you'll find a home

Uncertain though you've been
You'll find your way, of this I'm sure
Unbending as it's been you'll find a home
Unbending as it's been you'll find a home

Lyrics:

Sometimes
Sometimes if I cry, would you hold me for a while?
Sometimes if I faint, would you stay behind with me?
Sometimes if I'm weary, would you help me get some rest?
And sometimes if I can't sleep would you watch the night with me?

Sometimes if I fall would you come and pick me up?
Sometimes if I break would you fight my war for a while?
Sometimes if I can't, would you be the part that can?
And sometimes if I can't sleep, would you watch the night with me?

Sometimes if my heart's grown cold, would you warm it with your hands?
Sometimes it it's getting dark, would you tell me all my dreams?
Sometimes if God's silent, would you tell me He's still there?
And sometimes if I can't sleep, would you watch the night with me?

We could watch the stars..

Selena Gomez's "Back to You": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ulNswX3If6U

"Back to You" - Selena Gomez

Took you like a shot
Thought that I could chase you with the cold evening
Let a couple years water down how I'm feeling about you (feeling about you)
And every time we talk
Every single word builds up to this moment
And I gotta convince myself I don't want it, even though I do (even though I do)

You could break my heart in two
But when it heals, it beats for you
I know it's forward but it's true
I wanna hold you when I'm not supposed to
When I'm lying close to someone else
You're stuck in my head and I can't get you out of it
If I could do it all again
I know I'd go back to you
I know I'd go back to you
I know I'd go back to you

I never got it right
Playing and re-playing old conversations
Overthinking every word and I hate it
'Cause it's not me ('Cause it's not me)
And what's the point in hiding
And everybody knows that we got unfinished business
And I regret it if I didn't say this isn't what it could be (isn't what it could be)

You could break my heart in two
But when it heals, it beats for you
I know it's forward but it's true
I wanna hold you when I'm not supposed to
When I'm lying close to someone else
You're stuck in my head and I can't get you out of it
If I could do it all again
I know I'd go back to you
I know I'd go back to you

Lyrics:

Weary
Rest your weary eyes
Don't look outside
Just for now
You can hide

Let the rain come down
Just hear its sound
You'll be alright
You will be found

Uncertain though you've been
You'll find your way, of this I'm sure
Unbending as it's been, you'll find a home

Through the broken leaves
And scattered trees
There is a pull
To set you free

And when you're ready, dear
And shed your fear
You'll find yourself
And heaven here

Uncertain though you've been
You'll find your way, of this I'm sure
Unbending as it's been you'll find a home

But in this deep
Just keep your sleep
Rest a while
In weary dreams

Uncertain though you've been
You'll find your way, of this I'm sure
Unbending as it's been you'll find a home

Uncertain though you've been
You'll find your way, of this I'm sure
Unbending as it's been you'll find a home

Unbending as it's been you'll find a home

"Polaroids" by Shawn Colvin

Please no more therapy
Mother take care of me
Piece me together with a
Needle and thread
Wrap me in eiderdown
Lace from your wedding gown
Fold me and lay me down
On your bed
Or liken me to a shoe
Blackened and spit-shined through
Kicking back home to you
Smiling back home
Singing back home to you
Laughing back home to you
Dragging back home to you

I was so wary then
The ugly American
Thinner than oxygen
Tough as a whore
I said you can lie to me
I own what's inside of me
And nothing surprises me anymore
But forests in Germany
Kids in the Tuileries
Broken-down fortresses
In old Italy
And claiming his victory
Shrouded in mystery
He went running away with me

Back in our home New York
Walking these streets forlorn
We all in our uniforms
Black and black
Doing that slouch and jive
The artist must survive
We've got all we need we cried
And we don't look back
Thinking we had it made
Poised for the hit parade
Knee deep in accolades
The conceptual pair
But ever the malcontent
He left without incident
Vanished into thin air

Now I am always amazed
Words can fill up a page
Pages fill up the days
Between him and me
But the vows that we never keep
From bedrooms to business-speak
Make me remember how cheap
Words can be
And the letters I wrote you of
Were those of the desperate stuff
Like begging for l..
