JS8Call messaging interface provides an easy to use GUI interface for getting email, APRS, & text messages sent using JS8Call.

If you do not get the message to appear in JS8Call, follow these directions - In JS8Call, go to file/settings. Then choose the reporting tab at the top. Place a check mark in all three boxes: Enable UDP Server API, Accept UPD Requests, & Accept Dynamic Station Information Then try again. 73, de KM4ACK

In this video watch me attempt to take a Little Tarheel 2 mobile HF antenna and attempt to convert it to an NVIS antenna. NVIS or Near Vertical Incident Skywave is an antenna configuration designed for efficient communications on 40 or 80 meters at a range up to 500 miles. Often used for emcomm or ARES groups to communicate when 2M won’t make the trip or when amateur radio repeaters are off line or nonexistent. NVIS radiates almost straight up and returns in a cone shaped pattern.

Mobilinkd is a bluetooth TNC that I picked up to go along with my Yaesu FT65R. The mobilinkd allows you to add ARPS to any handheld amateur radio by using the GPS signal from an Android phone. Just pair the mobilinkd with the phone, connect the mobilinkd to the ham radio of your choice, and use APRSDroid on your phone for the APRS interface. Come along as I test the mobilinkd hooked to the Yaesu HT. Also, you will get a glace at YAAC running an APRS digipeater on the Raspberry Pi in my mobile. We will test APRS messaging between the HT and the mobile and look at sending APRS text messages to a regular cellular device.

Pat Winlink Peer to Peer or P2P is a way for two amateur radio stations to exchange email messages without going through the primary Winlink system. We will take a look at setting up your ham radio and Pat Winlink to be the "server" station and show you how to initiate a peer to peer connection using Pat. While this video uses 2 meter 2M for it's connection, I plan to do another video in the future that uses ARDOP peer to peer with Pat.

APRS Messages is just one of the many cool ways you can use the APRS system on a ham radio. APRS is much more than vehicle tracking. You can send messages between two amateur radio stations, send messages to regular cellular devices, and even get your local weather forecast over APRS. Let's check out some of these features in today's video.

I have gotten to the bottom of the nasty digital signal issue that I was having with the DRAWS hat by Northwest Digital Radio. I am happy to report there is nothing wrong with the board. We will look at some things that could be wrong if you are seeing the same thing when operating digital modes with your ham radio. D.R.A.W.S. = Digital Amateur Radio Work Station

The only way to get the absolute latest rig control software on the Raspberry Pi is to compile hamlib from source. Let's take a look at getting the absolute latest rig control for your ham radio installed. This will allow you to control your amateur radio with apps like Pat Winlink. It will also allow you to write custom scripts in the future and open many more doors on the Raspberry Pi for automation. This installation is done on a Raspberry Pi 3 running stretch.

Radio Frequency Interference or RFI can be a real pain in the rear when it is getting Into your signalink sound card. Don’t follow my lead by making your amateur radio experience any harder than it has to be. RFI will create chatter in your sound card. This not only happens to the signalink but many other sound cards as well. Keeping you USB cables as short as possible from your raspberry pi or other computer will help eliminate the chance of RFI in your equipment and make your ham radio experience much more enjoyable.

Learn how to enable SSH on your Raspberry Pi computer before you boot the pi for the first time. This is a handy tip if you are running your Raspberry Pi headless as I do. You can also enable VNC without connecting a monitor to your pi after you have SSH enabled. This trick works with Raspbian Stretch and Buster.

Let’s take a closer look at my portable crossband repeater. The repeater isn’t quite the same as a regular ham radio repeater but can certainly be a useful emcomm tool in your toolbox. The repeater could be used as a private repeater at your offgrid cabin or as a temporary repeater for events like a bike race. It could also server an ARES group as an easily deployable repeater during a natural disaster such as a hurricane or tornado. At the heart of this crossband repeater is a Wouxun KG-UV920P amateur radio powered by 2 7AH SLA batteries wired in parallel give you 14AH of power. This should power the repeater for around 8-10 hours without a solar panel. By adding solar panel(s), you could extend the run time of the crossband repeater easily to several days if not longer.
