The goal was to create a mold from a car mirror cover and cast a thin part to be used as a removable skin. The part created had some small flaws that turned into a big mess.

What's the best way to prevent carbon fiber fabric from unraveling and becoming deformed? Add a stabilizer to hold the weave in place during cutting and lamination. The High Elven Shield recycled surfboard makeover continues with layers of reinforcing fabric and resin to make it rigid and strong. To preserve the detail and shape, the entire shield and surfboard are left to cure in a vacuum bag after each layer. There's a problem though... looks like I'll be doing more sanding than expected.

I saved a damaged surfboard from becoming landfill. Now I need to turn it into something cool to justify the space it consumes. It's just the right size for a Lord of the Rings High Elven Shield replica, so I'll be cutting the shape, making a template for the ornate details and attaching the pieces together in preparation for a layer of fiberglass.

Wearing individual parts of the Lord of the Rings Nazgul inspired costume works to show them in motion separately, but summer is too hot to wear the whole costume outside. Instead I tried creating a wooden armature to stage the elements for photos and video and then combined footage from the handheld camera and the drone to create a dramatic sequence featuring the Ringwraith.

Designing and constructing a Lord of the Rings Nazgul inspired cloak that that will turn a 6 ft. tall human into an 8 ft. tall Ringwraith. Custom padding and straps secure the empty hood in place above the wearer's concealed head. Stay tuned at the end for a look at the complete Nazgul costume in a setting reminiscent of the Dead Marshes.

With the goal of finding useful prop making materials, today I'm testing out 3D printing filaments provided by MatterHackers as the August Hacker of the Month. I'll print a bunch of ants in Pro Series Ryno / PETG / Metallic Bronze PLA and compare those to my favorite filaments, Matte Fiber HTPLA and Cheetah TPU. I'll also try polishing a Metallic Bronze axe.
