Sylvia Melendez was nominated for a Healthy Pets Game Changer Award by Marie G.
She discovered her love for fostering animals when an abandoned Great Dane named Rosie landed on her doorstep.

For the last five years, Sylvia has been fostering pets in her home and working with rescue groups that focus on different kinds of pets and different breeds.

Fostering Rosie opened Sylvia’s heart to working with animals — not only dogs but cats and other pets as well.

She was also inspired to open her own business, a pet boarding and daycare service called Wagging Tails & Loving Paws that she runs out of her home in Virginia.

Dr. Deirdre Farr has spent decades improving animals’ lives using alternative and complementary care.

After experiencing burnout and frustration at the tool given to her by conventional veterinary care, Dr. Farr was about to change career paths, until she discovered acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine and chiropractic care.

Initially, Dr. Farr’s colleagues didn’t believe in the alternative tools she was offering, but when she was able to help their “dead-end cases,” their minds changed.

When Dr. Farr works with a patient, she sees them as a whole being — one that’s not only physical but also emotional and spiritual in nature; this is key to supporting their wellness.

Dr. Farr retired from veterinary care in 2019, but her passion to help animals brought her back into practice; she can now be found working one afternoon a week at Iowa Veterinary Wellness Center in Des Moines.

At Veterinary Holistic Center in Springfield, Virginia, pets get access to multiple integrative modalities all under one roof.

Its founder, Dr. Jordan Kocen, was nominated for a Healthy Pets Game Changer Award by Dave W.

Veterinary Holistic Center in Springfield offers natural veterinary services, including acupuncture, homeopathy, Chinese herbal medicine, chiropractic, massage and even animal communication — that are lacking in many areas of the U.S.

What makes the facility unique, aside from its integrative focus, is that it’s a home for all types of practitioners to practice and work together to build the best plan of care for each animal.

By putting the pets at the center of their care, they’re able to provide solutions for health problems that haven’t responded to conventional care.

Today’s Pet Game Changer is Molly Goldston, founder of Saving Grace, a non-profit organization in North Carolina that rescues dogs on euthanasia lists across the state and pulls out all the stops to get them ready for adoption.

Molly began working in animal sheltering right out of college, and found a huge need for rescue services in her own backyard and throughout her county and state; many of the shelters in NC, especially in rural areas, can’t provide veterinary or adoption services.

Saving Grace rescues, rehabs, and rehomes about 4,000 dogs a year, and depends on volunteers, fosters, and individual donations to save pets from euthanasia and prepare them for adoption.

Beth Roberts from Bristow Barnyard Animal Rescue in Bristow, Oklahoma, is saving the lives of animals in her community.

They have rescued farm animals of all kinds — including steers, horses, goats, pigs, chickens, ducks, geese and rabbits — and also do rescue, rehabilitation and adoption of dogs and cats.

Nominated for a Healthy Pets Game Changer Award by Ethel S., Bristow Barnyard Animal Rescue has over 100 animals and provides low-cost spay and neuter services.

A wonderful donation from an estate recently provided the much-needed resources to allow them to build their own spay-and-neuter clinic at the rescue.

The help that they’re providing to animals today will touch lives for generations to come, so that decades from now their community and even the state as a whole will be a better place for animals and the people who get to experience these animals.

Today’s Pet Game Changer is Jennifer Rosen, founder of Bullies and Buddies, a 501c3 organization based in Redondo Beach, CA; the rescue is strictly foster-based and is dedicated to helping pit bulls and related breeds find the loving homes they deserve.

Jennifer made the decision to go into bully breed rescue work after her first dog, a pit bull, passed away, and because she wants to do away with the stigma attached to bully breeds, along with the horrific abuse and neglect so many endure.

Bullies and Buddies began with two dogs and has rescued thousands more since, but the work continues as shelters and rescues across the U.S. become more and more overwhelmed with homeless dogs, the majority of which are pit bulls and bully mixes.

Today’s Pet Game Changer is Diana Babish, founder of the Animal Environment Association (AEA) in Bethlehem Palestine, which is the only animal shelter in the West Bank.

Diana started the shelter to save strays in the West Bank from neglect, abuse, and ‘animal control’ tactics that include shootings and poisonings.

Diana’s shelter provides a safe environment for dogs, cats, and other animals, plus neutering and other veterinary care as she can afford it; she’s also fighting an uphill battle to change hearts and minds about the treatment of strays.

The AEA-Bethlehem shelter is entirely publicly funded, and the need for donations is great.

From the time she was just 11 years old, Cheryl Salvati was rescuing animals, but it wasn’t until 2012 that she devoted her life to rescuing dogs full-time. After volunteering at animal rescue organizations for decades, Salvati received an opportunity to own and manage her own rescue organization.

Cheryl Salvati was nominated for a Healthy Pets Game Changer Award by Cheryl M.; her rescue — Rompin Paws Rescue in Arlington, Washington — finds a home for, on average, one dog a day.

Not only does Rompin Paws rescue dogs and find them loving homes, but they also educate new pet guardians on how to feed fresh, species-appropriate nutrition.

Animals that would otherwise have a miserable — or no — future are therefore able to extend their health span and longevity, living their healthiest, happiest lives possible.

Rompin Paws takes their time finding the best matches for their pups and working with potential adopters on how to transition their dogs off kibble and feed a healthier diet.

Cheryl wants to spread the word that rescue dogs need extra love and attention — and they deserve to be doted on by their “emotional support humans”.

In honor of Healthy Pets’ 12th Anniversary Week, I spoke with my CANWI cofounder, Dr. Donna Raditic about the exciting achievements and research being done to improve nutrition for our companion animals.

The mission of CANWI, the Companion Animal Nutrition and Wellness Institute, is to fund unbiased, independent nutrition research with the end goal of improving longevity and wellness in pets.

One CANWI-funded study looked at four differently processed dog diets — dry food, canned food, air dried food and minimally processed food — and measured harmful dietary AGEs.

CANWI is collaborating with experts like Dr. David Turner to test pet foods and create a pet food AGEs library.

Via unbiased research and nutrition lectures that Dr. Raditic is providing at veterinary schools, along with meaningful collaborations with other research institutions, veterinary schools and veterinary platforms, CANWI is providing much-needed information so people can make better decisions on how to nourish their pets.

Amber Dennison, chair of the Humane Society of the Ohio Valley’s operations committee, shared the inspiring story of the shelter’s evolution from a high-kill shelter to one that now rarely resorts to euthanasia.
Humane Society of the Ohio Valley is one of the oldest animal shelters in the U.S.; in 2015, a collective conscious decision was made to do everything they could to save every life that came into the shelter.

Animal shelters are rapidly evolving across the U.S., and there’s a need to coordinate so shelters that have too many animals can send them to those with not enough.

Dennison started out as a volunteer at the shelter and has found her passion in helping animals in need — and she wants everyone to know that we all have the power to make a difference.

While people sometimes avoid shelters, assuming them to be sad places, stopping in with a box of food or volunteering to walk a few dogs makes a significant impact.

The Caribbean is revered for its beautiful islands and friendly people, but they’re also home to thousands of animals in need of help. In the Dominican Republic, the mixed breed dogs that roam the streets and beaches are affectionately known as coconut hounds.

Joanna Edge with Dogs and Cats of the Dominican Republic — the leading animal rescue with the Caribbean — is helping to enact positive change on the island to help animals in need.

Nominated for a Healthy Pets Game Changer Award by Mark D., Joanna explained that their rescue organization is not only focused on rehabbing animals and spay-and-neuter initiatives but also on community outreach.

When possible, the organization places animals with foster homes until they find a qualified family to adopt them.

In about 85% of cases, the animals end up getting adopted in Canada, due to current red tape with flying them into the U.S.

If you’ll be traveling to the Dominican Republic, you can help by becoming a travel companion for dogs and cats — at no cost to you — to help them reach their forever homes.
