Mary Jo Rulffes, president of the Australian Cattle Dog Rescue Association (ACDRA), was nominated for a Game Changer Award by Nancy V.

A serendipitous meeting during a 2013 shopping trip in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, brought Mary Jo Rulffes together with ACDRA, after she worked with them to rescue a cattle dog in need.

Not only were they able to rescue the dog, but Rulffes ended up adopting her — and soon became president of ACDRA.

ACDRA is run completely by volunteers and is 100% foster home based; since 2019, they've pulled about 850 dogs from Georgia alone.

Rulffes continues to be inspired by those she's met along the way; her favorite part about working with ACDRA, aside from the dogs, is "the rescue family in the rescue"..

Much of what is considered holistic or alternative medicine is actually based on simple common sense. Many pet owners ultimately discover that the concepts of an integrative approach to treating their dog, cat or other companion animal make sense and are in fact easier to comprehend than many conventional medical approaches.

The AHVM Foundation’s “Be One in a Million” fundraising efforts are focused on raising money for independent research into pet nutrition and alternative therapies, and funding education for vet students and practicing DVMs who are interested in providing an integrative approach to the care of their patients.

Today I have a very special guest, Dr. Barbara Royal. Dr. Royal is a holistic veterinarian who practices small animal medicine and rehabilitation therapy in Chicago. She’s also an author (we’ll be discussing her latest book in an upcoming video) and President-Elect of the board of the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Foundation (AHVMF).

Dr. Barbara Royal, a holistic veterinarian, author and President-Elect of the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Foundation (AHVMF) sits down with Dr. Becker to discuss holistic and integrative medicine and the role of the AHVMF.

Much of what is considered holistic or alternative medicine is actually based on simple common sense. Many pet owners ultimately discover that the concepts of an integrative approach to treating their dog, cat or other companion animal make sense and are in fact easier to comprehend than many conventional medical approaches.

Dr. Royal’s top three holistic health tips for pet owners include biologically appropriate nutrition as the foundation, exercise for the body and mind, and avoiding over-medicating and over-vaccinating your pet.

It took an unfortunate fall down a flight of stairs at 3:00 am while letting her dogs out for this board-certified rehabilitation specialist expert to realize the importance of exercise for both dogs and cats. Find out more about the two types of physical exercise your pet needs for a healthy life.

Today is day four of bark & whiskers Creating Heathy, Happy Pets Week 2023, and our guest is veterinarian Dr. Laurie McCauley, a pioneer in the field of veterinary rehabilitation.

Dr. Laurie started out her career in a general veterinary practice, but within a few years, like so many of us, she felt the tug to add more tools to her toolbox, and was drawn to the field of rehabilitation.

Dr. Laurie opened the first-ever veterinary rehabilitation clinic in 1998 and designed the first underwater treadmill for dogs; the specialty she helped create, canine rehabilitation, became board certified 12 years later in 2010.

Today, Dr. Laurie operates a mobile canine rehab clinic and an online teaching platform, Optimum Pet Vitality.

Giving your dog a lot of physical exercise may help him become more athletic, but it doesn't address hyperactivity or provide mental stimulation. Rather, instead of over-exercising, this approach works well for stressed-out or even injured pets and helps build strong dog-owner bonds.

Today is day three of bark & whiskers Creating Heathy, Happy Pets Week 2023, and our guest is Jo Woodward, a positive reward-based dog trainer and canine enrichment specialist in North Yorkshire in the U.K.

In 2011, Jo took in a troubled rescue dog with issues so severe she couldn't live comfortably with Jo's family; it was that little pup who sparked Jo's passion to work with dogs and understand what makes them tick.

Twelve years ago, Jo launched her business, FurryTails, as a daycare, home boarding, and dog walking service; today, FurryTails specializes in dog training and canine enrichment.

Jo believes the foundation of training starts with enrichment, because dogs need to be mentally AND physically stimulated to prevent behavior problems, relieve boredom, foster a sense of calm and confidence, and strengthen the bond they share with their humans.

If you want your pet to be healthy, happy, energetic and live a long life, I urge you to start demanding food without these ingredients. Also, consider being like 43% of pet owners, and pay more for food that doesn't contain this vile substance.

In the U.S., almost all pet owners (95%) consider their pets to be part of the family.

Pet owners are increasingly looking for healthier, natural pet food and treat options, and are even moving beyond expectations of “high-quality” food towards “humanized” food.

About 43% of pet owners indicated they’d pay more for non-GMO (genetically modified organisms) pet products.

Welcome to day one of bark & whiskers' Creating Healthy, Happy Pets Week 2023! Today's expert introduces us to a threat that your pet may be exposed to on a daily basis that can promote diseases like diabetes, heart disease, brain and nerve disorders, as well as the growth of tumors.

Today is day one of bark & whiskers Creating Heathy, Happy Pets Week 2023, and our first guest is Dr. David Turner, an expert on the dangers of advanced glycation end products in ultraprocessed foods and president and co-founder of the Anti-A.G.E.S. Foundation.

In our interview, Dr. Turner explains exactly what AGEs are, how they end up in processed human and pet foods, and the ways in which they turbocharge the aging process.

One challenge in limiting the damage AGEs do in the body is that the majority of people, and the vast majority of pets in the U.S. eat mostly ultraprocessed diets.

Dogs aren't supposed to have a 'stinky doggy smell.' Or be so horribly itchy that they desperately claw and chew, self-inflicting trauma and pain. Yet some owners are so used to it that they think this is normal. What does your dog smell like today?

Yeast infections, especially of the skin and ears, are quite common in dogs. A normal amount of yeast progresses to an infection when the organism begins reproducing uncontrollably, causing an overgrowth.

Dogs with yeast infections often have an immune system imbalance, are on antibiotics or have recently taken them, are immunosuppressed, and/or have allergies.

Symptoms of a yeast infection in dogs include itching and general discomfort, a distinct and unpleasant body odor, skin irritation, and changes in mood or behavior.

Treatment of a yeasty dog starts with addressing the diet to remove all sources of sugar, including grains and carbs, and moving to species-appropriate nutrition supplemented with natural anti-fungal foods.

Disinfecting protocols and natural anti-fungal baths and rinses are also critically important in resolving a yeast infection.

This is the most common symptom of a certain type of brain tumor. It comes on suddenly and can be terrifying for you. If you see this or any of these other signs of a potential brain tumor, see your vet right away ... don't just brush off any of these symptoms.

Brain tumors are relatively common in older pets, and vary a great deal in their level of severity.

A brain tumor is “primary” if it originates in the brain; a secondary brain tumor originates outside the brain but metastasizes or otherwise invades brain tissue.

Symptoms of a tumor vary depending on its location in the brain
Traditional western treatments for brain tumors include the usual menu of surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy. Surgery is the best option, and chemo is rarely used against brain cancer.

Integrative/holistic veterinarians use adjunctive therapies with brain cancer patients that can sometimes slow the progression of the disease, and improve quality of life.

According to Dr. Buchoff, if every pet owner did this one thing that costs little or nothing to do, there would be a lot fewer vets, simply because their services wouldn't be needed like they are now. It is so crucial to your pet's health, it's a travesty every pet owner isn't already doing it.

One of my longtime holistic veterinary medicine friends, Dr. Gerald Buchoff, was nominated for a Game Changer Award by Paula W.

Dr. Buchoff has been an integrative veterinarian since 1995 and is a former president of the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association.

He's the director of Longevity Veterinary Center in Whippany, New Jersey, a 15,000 square foot hospital that provides both holistic and emergency veterinary care.

Dr. Buchoff created Dr. B's Raw Diet, Longevity, is made from locally sourced ingredients designed to help your pet reach optimal health
His No. 1 health tip for pet parents is to keep your pet well hydrated.

Erica’s journey back from the depths of her grief included creating a website, Wolfie’s Wish, so that she could share what worked for her with other pet parents mourning the loss of their own animal companions.

Today, Wolfie’s Wish provides a wonderful resource for people who’ve lost a beloved pet and don’t know how to cope or where to turn for help.

Countless cats and nearly 80% of dogs are fearful and anxious when they go to the vet - so much so that some owners think twice before bringing their pets in for regular visits. If your pet is one of the many who dread the veterinarian, take these steps now to help fear melt away.

Veterinary visits come with unfamiliar sights, sounds and smells, other animals and strangers around every corner, making many pets stressed out and anxious.

For cats, take time getting them used to the cat carrier, and all pets should spend time taking occasional car rides to neutral or fun places — like a family member’s house or local park.

Gradually acclimate your pet to the vet’s office by dropping by for a short visit to say hello; this is important for cats too, especially kittens
It's also important that your pet gets used to handling, including having their paws, nails and ears touched.

Choose a fear-free certified practice with species-specific exam rooms, which conducts exams where your pet prefers, such as on your lap, on the floor or in a carrier, if possible.

Imagine describing your lifestyle, personality and what you're looking for, and having someone with a proven track history match you up with the ideal homeless dog. It's happening right now, and here is how you can get involved.

Dr. Turkan Ertugrul, nominated for a Game Changer Award by D. Roe, founded Saver of Souls Pet Rescue, located in Hampton Roads, Virginia.

Saver of Souls Pet Rescue initially focused on saving California Chihuahuas, but now does a lot of local rescues as well, with Chihuahuas and other breeds.

They’re entirely volunteer-based and rely on donations for funding. All of their animals live in foster homes while they’re waiting to be adopted.

In addition to focusing on dogs with health or behavioral issues, Dr. Ertugrul has a knack for matching people with the dog that’s the right fit for them — and finding the perfect pairing.

If you’d like to learn more about Savor of Souls Pet Rescue, you can find them at their website, SaverofSoulsPetRescue.com, as well as on Facebook.

The version I compiled 13 years ago is one of the most popular videos ... But since then I have released a newer, revised list - and this one contains a category of pet food that wasn't even popular 13 years ago.

The pet food industry has changed and evolved since I published my first list of best-to-worst types of pet food 5 years ago.

My updated list includes a whole new category of pet food not included on my previous list.

Two important things to remember when selecting a pet food: your dog or cat is a carnivore, and the food you choose should mimic his ancestral diet as closely as possible.

Monitoring your pup's bathroom activity is the easiest way to know if she's feeling under the weather. If you see any of these 7 specific types of stool, it might be something mild or something serious enough to warrant a visit to your vet.

An excellent way to stay on top of your dog’s health is to monitor what comes out of him, otherwise known as feces/stool/poop. It’s important to know your dog’s “normal” when it comes to poop.

The most obvious symptom of a health problem in dogs is diarrhea, which has several characteristics that vary depending on the cause.

There are several potential causes of diarrhea in dogs, ranging from a change in diet to cancer.

It’s time to call the veterinarian if the diarrhea doesn’t resolve on its own in a day or so, or if your dog is showing other signs of illness.

Like so many veterinary Game Changers, Dr. Katie’s inspiration to branch out into the fields of holistic and functional medicine was her very own 14-year-old dog.

Dr. Katie started her integrative journey over 15 years ago, and today she runs a busy practice helping to maintain and restore health in her patients, and often inspiring their owners to take care of their health as well.

Pets can be amazing teachers, and if you pay attention, they can teach you how to live in the present, be a more decent human being and get in touch with your emotions at a deep level. Don't wait until your pet's dying days to realize this - here's how to be intentional throughout your pet's life.

Dr. Zach Scheurich, an integrative veterinarian, provides holistic veterinary care for Northwest Arkansas and Southwest Missouri.

He was nominated for a Game Changer award due to his unique ability to help pet guardians expand their relationships with their animals — and view them in different lights.

Dr. Z embraces the use of plants, including Chinese medicine and herbs, in his practice
With experience treating wildlife, exotic animals, horses, livestock and cats and dogs, Dr. Z treats virtually the entire animal kingdom.

Dr. Z believes that, if we’re willing to pay attention, dogs and other animals can teach us many lessons, including how to be more decent human beings, to live in the present and get in touch with our emotions at a deep level.

This oil is a powerful anti-inflammatory, and a terrific way to support your pet's immune system and overall health, but it's been given a bad rap in recent years. Not only is it one of the best topical therapies, but it's also excellent for brushing teeth, staving off doggy dementia and much more.

Carmina O’Connor and Charisa Antigua are twin sisters and the entrepreneurs behind CocoTherapy, a line of organic coconut oil products.

In the Philippines, Carmina and Charisa were raised with an understanding of the nourishing and healing properties of coconut oil; now in the U.S., the sisters have grown their family’s third generation business into a flourishing enterprise.

Coconut oil can be used to soothe and heal a wide range of skin issues in pets; given orally, it offers tremendous health benefits thanks to its anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal properties.

MCT oil is also beneficial for slowing canine cognitive decline and can help reduce seizure potential in epileptic dogs.

Sylvia Melendez was nominated for a Healthy Pets Game Changer Award by Marie G.
She discovered her love for fostering animals when an abandoned Great Dane named Rosie landed on her doorstep.

For the last five years, Sylvia has been fostering pets in her home and working with rescue groups that focus on different kinds of pets and different breeds.

Fostering Rosie opened Sylvia’s heart to working with animals — not only dogs but cats and other pets as well.
