In the West today, and throughout much of the 20th century, rapid Asian economic development was something that proceeded so consistently that it appeared as if by natural law. Like Japan before it and with China today, however, behind the scenes were often very driven leaders who, in South Korea’s case, seized power in a military coup and tightly coupled state economic policy with support for Chaebol conglomerates in key sectors of heavy industry focused on export-led growth. Tonight we are joined by Borzoi, friend and expert on many things Korean, to help us better understand Park Chung-Hee, the man who ruled South Korea for 18 years during the period of its most rapid development.

Cybernetics is a term that, broadly defined, encompasses nearly all human-system interaction. More narrowly, and with help of Hollywood, images of intelligent robots and computer-enhanced humans come to mind. But in the real world, and especially when it comes to dealing with issues of pervasive scale and self-reinforcing centers of power such as social networks, the study of human-computer interaction becomes more than one regarding simple inputs and outputs, but rather understanding and dealing with entirely new and almost indomitable systems that by the nature of their size pose a real threat to the average citizen whether that person actively engages with them or not. And in many cases, the citizen by virtue of the convenience and utility of the systems has no choice.

With the threat of yet another virus spreading from China and the Chinese government effectively quarantining millions of people inside the city of Wuhan, the world is asking what is the threat of contagion given the rapid spread of symptoms and our increasingly globalized system. Theories range on the origin of the disease from poor sanitation to an unintentional or even intentional release of a new bioweapon. But what is clear is that the spread of many pandemics in the past have had the ability to not only wipe out vast populations, but also completely re-write the course of history by acting as a wrecking ball to prevailing political and sociological orders.

Situated on the northern reaches of Ukraine in what was once the heart of the western Soviet empire, the Chernobyl nuclear exclusion zone now consists of nearly 3,000 square kilometers of pristine forest that is eerily devoid of any sizable human population. At the heart of this atomic wasteland sits the now defunct and still highly radioactive husk of what was once the largest nuclear power plant in Ukraine. The core meltdown that occurred in the middle of the night in April 1986 spewed radioactive dust and steam several kilometers into the air, sending a cloud over all of central and northern Europe, tripping alarms at power stations as far away as Sweden. Before the dust had even settled, over 500,000 workers had to be dispatched in an attempt to seal the burning reactor from further contaminating the surroundings. Not only did this place an enormous physical and financial burden on the Soviet Union, but also a psychological one, in many ways bringing about the end of the USSR and casting a grave shadow of doubt over the nuclear energy industry throughout the world.

“December 7th, 1941 - a day which will live in infamy.” So said President Franklin Roosevelt in his speech to Congress in asking for a declaration of war against Japan, citing the attack on Pearl Harbor in which over 2,000 Americans were killed. Framing the event as an unprovoked attack on American soil, FDR led the United States into the largest military conflict in its history. What is less clear, however, is how much the inner circle of the Presidency, the war cabinet and the intelligence services 1. knew the attack was coming, and 2. wanted it to occur to spark the necessary public support for a full scale war in both Europe and Asia.

Depending on whom you ask, the Mormon Church and the people that form their membership is either a fringe group on the edge of the American frontier and the Christian theological tradition, or a successful if unique people that have managed to become a regular part of American society. But what is rarely in dispute is the Mormons are the only large religious sect, with domain over effectively the entire state of Utah and a significant presence in the surrounding states, to have fought a series of skirmishes and small wars with the US federal government and managed to survive. Not only that, but the Mormons have also thrived financially, as well as demographically, with higher birthrates than the American average, and constitute a growing segment of the population in the Mountain West as well as abroad with their missionary work. The old distrust, however, still lingers among many, as the recent standoffs involving the Mormon Bundy family in 2014 attests. Tonight we are joined by Dillon Schmitt, who grew up in the Church, to offer his personal experience as well as a perspective on the outlook of the Mormons going forward.

With the very public arrest of Wikileaks’s founder Julian Assange and the still unexplained burning of the world’s most well known Cathedral in Notre Dame, things came to a head when convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, billionaire of murky origin and operator of a private island known for shuttling public figures to it on the ‘Lolita Express’ was allegedly found dead in his cell of an apparent suicide. In a rare coming together of the Left and Right, the slogan “Epstein Didn’t Kill Himself” began appearing on the bottom of coffee cups and in public spaces, demonstrating a new form of ‘Samizdat’ in America more reminiscent of Soviet Russia and the intrigues of living under a totalitarian regime than the supposed land of the free and the home of the brave. Touching upon the human themes of duty, honor, and loyalty with the subjects of war, shadow governments, and technology, the series arguably captures more heavy political content in a single game than many academic scholars do in a lifetime. With the departure of creator Hideo Kojima, in the vein of Big Boss, who said the “best soldiers are useless without a war to fight,” perhaps the best franchises are useless without their original founders, whose creative vision is indelibly linked to the original art.

As the winter months set in, nature becomes a cruel reminder of one’s mortality. As maritime traditions go, navigating the waters of the Great Lakes was always a treacherous one, combining extreme cold, enormous size, and gale-force winds that could reach hurricane force. On November 10th, 1975, nearby ships and shore radio stations lost contact with the Edmund Fitzgerald, one of the largest and most storied iron ore freighters that worked the lakes with some regularity, and the last lake freighter to go down since. After losing its radar and beginning to list, the Fitzgerald went under with all 29 crew members in the darkness of the night, leaving rescue crews and researchers alike more questions than answers as to how such a vessel could have capsized and sank with such speed.

Something is rotten in Denmark. In an age of near-instantaneous access to place and substance, and an over-abundance of people sharing their amazing experiences with it, people in America report being less happy, taking longer to form families, and an overall feeling that something is wrong. By contrast, the Amish, living on the very same land as most other Americans, report being the happiest in the country while completely rejecting the social and technological norms of those around them. According to an article in Quartz, “When sociologists were really diving into the Amish culture in the 1960s and 1970s, 75% of Amish children would decide to become Amish adults. The most recent statistics show that 95% are now choosing to join the Amish Church.” Clearly the “English”, as the Amish still refer to the Americans around them, are doing it wrong.

Understanding the full extent of corruption in the United States government is something even legal scholars struggle with. But int the 1980s and early 1990s, Herculean efforts were made in the days before the internet to follow leads and conduct investigative journalism on nefarious activity by agencies such as the CIA by reporters including Gary Webb and Danny Casalaro. Like Webb, however, Casalaro met an untimely end and was found dead in his hotel room under suspicious circumstances. The work he did on ‘The Octopus’, what we would call the ‘Deep State’ today, highlights a web of high level people involving illegal espionage, money laundering, drugs and gun running that persist in operating together in America today.

As a pilot, the profession brings one above the rest as a matter of course. As a military pilot, flying brings one into danger as a matter of duty. As a man, Hans-Ulrich Rudel rose above all others, certainly in the context of World War II and within the German Military. Flying over 2,000 missions in the Stuka dive bomber and bearing the highest decoration of any soldier, Rudel survived over 30 crashes and was able to take out over 800 enemy vehicles, hundreds of tanks and even a battleship. After the war he was the top candidate for the German Reich Party, and spent much of his time consulting with presidents of South American nations as a military adviser.

The rise of the Private Military Contractor, or PMC, may seem like a recent phenomena, but the tradition of hiring mercenary armies is an ancient one. These enigmatic ‘soldiers of fortune’ wear no flag, offer seemingly little loyalty to anyone other than the highest bidder, and operate globally using the latest in military hardware and techniques - all under the cover of secrecy when doing their job right.

Written in the wake of modern mankind’s worst violent cataclysm to date, the Great War, Lothrop Stoddard’s ‘The Rising Tide of Color’ noted the sharp decline of European civilization and the breaking of its dominance over the colored world it had held since the advent of colonialism in the 15th century. Stoddard went on to predict the further deterioration of the white world’s relative standing in the years to come, as the rise of Asia and the utter annihilation wrought upon Europe in the Second World War paved the way for final decolonization and the rise of a new world order that saw white supremacy and even race aware thinking such as Stoddard’s deemed anathema.

Invention is often described as 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration. In the high-flying game of venture capital, where the stakes are in the billions of dollars and the competition is on a global scale, the odds for true invention are even longer. Words like innovation are often bandied about, with recent entrants like ‘disruption’ taking a more aggressive spin on the culture of Silicon Valley, but the true success stories, while building on the backs of some genuinely breakthrough developments such as the microprocessor and the personal computer, have given way to more derivative works such as scrapbooking on a website (Pinterest) and taxi cabs on a smartphone (Uber.) Venture capital, originally a term connoting ‘adventure’, has turned into something much more mundane, short-sighted, and in many ways a sign of the times of diminished expectations and reduced ambition.

International arms smuggling is one of those businesses that captures the imagination of authors and Hollywood producers alike, conjuring images of suave but savvy businessmen in sharply pressed suits sitting in cafes in some European resort town hammering out three simultaneous interconnected deals on their satellite phone. Figures like this have and do exist, yet the illicit trade in arms is but a shadow of the defense contracting industry that supplies much of the world’s major militaries with their weapons, the United States first among them, to then only be sold off at steep discounts to the secondary market, which inevitably finds its way into the hands of smaller nations, guerrilla armies, and those with a penchant for military hardware in a business or part of the world that demands they maintain an extra degree of finality in their stride.
