* Mosca Pass Hiking Trail
* Hiking at Great Sand Dunes National Park
* Hiking Trails in Colorado

Welcome back to the Nash Potatoes Outdoor Show! Today, I'll be hiking the Mosca Pass Trail at Great Sand Dunes National Park in southern Colorado.

Total Length: 6.9 miles
Elevation gain: 1,476 feet
Total Time: 3 hours 18 minutes

In my last hiking video, I talked a bit about getting older and how it's been affecting my life. Well, today I've got a pretty good story to highlight this even further. Recently, I've been moving around a lot. So, my hiking backpack needed to be reorganized.

I got so tired of forgetting to bring things on my hike that I actually made a list of stuff I might be prone to forgetting. While I was packing my backpack, I thought to myself...man, I'm really good at this. Maybe I should make a video about what to bring on your next hiking trip. It was a little bit of confidence, a little bit of simply being proud of myself, and a little bit of arrogance.

I recently watched a video on YouTube produced by The History Channel. The title was, "When Bears Attack: 3 Real Life Nightmares."

VIDEO LINK: https://youtu.be/gNED5bezPD0?si=NapxD8WW__a5LzIY

I'll post a link in the description of this video in case you're interested in watching it. With this video still fresh in my mind, bringing my bear spray was a top priority of mine.

So, I made sure that was packed, closed up my backpack, and set it on the stool inside my camper. Then, I put my cooler in the car, put my coffee mug in the car, and took off for Great Sand Dunes National Park, which is just 30 minutes from my campground.

The last 3 days were extremely windy, but today was much calmer. So, I was excited to get on the trail and enjoy some outdoor time.

I got to the trailhead around noon. I got out of my car, walked around to the passenger side to get my backpack and guess what...I actually forgot to BRING my backpack!

To this day, I don't even ..

Welcome back to the Nash Potatoes Outdoor Show! Today, I'll be hiking a portion of the Sand Ramp Trail at Great Sand Dunes National Park in southern Colorado. I'll also be giving you some valuable information about the Medano Pass Primitive Road. Finally, I wanted to give you a quick update on my mental health. Specifically, I plan to briefly discuss aging and my energy level.

This video was recorded on Easter Sunday. It was quite windy with about 40 mph wind gusts. I did my best to hold the camera steady.

1. Sand Ramp Trail

Anyway, the total length of the Sand Ramp Trail varies based on where you park. If you park at the Piñon Flats Campground, your distance will be 12 miles out and 12 miles back. If you prefer, you can park at the Point of No Return. If you do, your distance will only be 11 miles out and 11 miles back.

I parked at the Pinon Flats Campground and turned around once I reached Medano Creek. As you can see, my total distance was 9.25 miles.

Because most of this hike is in the sand, be sure to allow for more time than you normally would.

2. Medano Pass Primitive Road

The first half of this trail actually runs parallel with the Medano Pass Primitive 4-Wheel Drive Road. So, let me quickly give you some information about that as well.

The Medano Pass Primitive Road is a 22-mile rough road that connects Great Sand Dunes with Colorado State Highway 69. The road is generally considered moderately challenging, with an elevation gain of about 2,000 ft.

The road is passable with high-clearance 4-wheel drive vehicles and doesn't require reservations. It's mostly eas..

* Where is the Crestone Ziggurat?
* Where is Crestone, Colorado?
* What is a Ziggurat?

Crestone, Colorado is located in the San Luis Valley near the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and Great Sand Dunes National Park.

It has a population of less than 150 people, but is home to more than 27 distinct spiritual groups.

The Crestone Ziggurat is the only spiritual structure of its kind in the United States. It sits along a short 1.3-mile hiking trail.

So, what exactly is a ziggurat? It’s an ancient religious tower commonly built in Mesopotamia between 2,200 and 500 B.C.

The structure’s purpose was to connect heaven and Earth, hence its towering nature. Essentially, it's a stairway to heaven. The idea is that you walk in a spiral with the intention of it bringing you closer to heaven.

Today, the Crestone Ziggurat is open to the public. Visitors can climb the spiral ramp to the top, which offers stunning views of the surrounding area, making it a perfect spot for reflection and quiet contemplation.

===

This ziggurat in Colorado's San Luis Valley is the only spiritual structure of its kind in the U.S

Situated in the San Luis Valley, the tall yellow spiral contrasts with the stark blue sky. A dirt path leads up the hill to the unique building, which can be climbed by following the winding concrete incline that wraps around the structure.

From the top, a panoramic view. To the east, you can see the sand dunes rolling like waves. To the north, the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. The quiet peace is only disrupted by the wind.

The Crestone ziggurat is the only spiritual structure of its kind in the U.S. The monument in southern Colorado mirrors those from ancient Mesopotamia.

The ziggurat is maintained by the Karma Thegsum Tashi Gomang — a group of Tibetan Buddhists based in Crestone who follow the Karma Kagyu lineage.

It’s no surprise that the only ziggurat in North America sits in Crestone, with more than 27 distinct spiritual groups calli..

* Best Ski Resorts in Colorado

Welcome back to the Nash Potatoes Outdoor Show. Today, I'm at Loveland Ski Area in Colorado. This is my second time skiing at Loveland, but my first time skiing the trails off Chair 8 on the other side of Interstate 70. I'm excited to show you that area as it was extremely beautiful.

* Tango Road

This trail is on the other side of Interstate 70. Last time I skied here, this area wasn't open yet...due to a lack of snow. I was quite nervous about this area because it looked so steep and...I assumed there would be a limited number of groomed trails.

This trail was great, but I had to stop about halfway down. It was just narrow enough that I wasn't sure if I could safely pass the skiers ahead of me.

This trail was fun, but it's both steep & narrow...and the landing area in front of Chair 8 is extremely small. I'm usually a pretty aggressive skier, but that small landing area had me a bit nervous. I ended up getting passed by two skiers who clearly had no fear whatsoever. It was actually really cool to watch them.

At this point in the day, I was ready to head back to the main area. These are the trails I took because it looked like the easiest way back...

There is actually a tunnel that goes under the highway, but I heard it was a giant sheet of ice. The Scrub Trail under Chair 4 would've been a great way back, but...as you can see it wasn't groomed. For me, skiing moguls is no fun at all as it usually leads to a wipeout. The route I took was insanely beautiful, but to be honest...I hated it. The path through the trees was extremely challenging and a bit dangerous. I kept looking for an alternate way down, but didn't really see anythi..

I had planned on spending just one day here, but had so much fun yesterday that I decided to come back again today. Copper has secured its place as one of my top three favorite ski resorts.

Located just 75 miles west of Denver, Copper Mountain is the 7th largest ski resort in Colorado, they have free parking in the Alpine Lot, and offer $99 lift tickets on Thursdays.

They call themself “the Athlete's Mountain” because it’s the official training center for the U.S. Ski & Snowboard team.

Copper Mountain was founded in 1972 and it's been on the Ikon Pass since 2018.

On December 6, Monarch Mountain opened for the 2023 & 2024 ski season. I was lucky enough to be able to ski on Opening Day. January Skiing at Monarch Mountain in Salida, Colorado

So, let me tell you a little bit about this hidden gem of a ski resort!

Monarch Mountain is located 21 miles west of Salida, Colorado. It’s situated on Monarch Pass at the continental divide.

It officially started as a ski area in 1939, although people had been skiing the mountains surrounding the valley as far back as 1914.

It has 67 trails, two terrain parks, and an extreme terrain area called Mirkwood Basin, which consists of 130 acres of double-black diamond extreme skiing!

They’re open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The season pass is currently priced at $659, which is a really great deal! They pride themselves on being an independent ski resort who doesn’t use any snow making equipment at all. Their snow has been 100% natural since 1939.

I also wanted to mention that the customer service was amazing on this day! Every single employee I interacted with was both fun & friendly.

The biggest little mountain in Colorado.
100% natural snow!
Keeping it real since 1939!

Today, I've got an amazing video for you for multiple reasons!
1. It was a beautiful bluebird day in central Colorado!
2. Monarch Mountain has received 56" of snow in the last 7 days.
3. On my third run, I had a hilarious head first wipeout.
4. I downloaded all new music to supplement my video.
5. I recorded in 4K at 60 fps so the clarity is incredible.

If you happened to watch my Monarch video from 3 years ago, this trail is where my greatest wipeout of all-time occurred...and that was definitely in the back of my mind the whole time.

On December 6, Monarch Mountain opened for the 2023 & 2024 ski season. I was lucky enough to be able to ski on Opening Day. It was 45 degrees with blue sky and…they’ve already got 44 out of 67 trails open. I recorded this video using my GoPro 11 Mini. It was recorded in 4K at 60 frames per second so the quality & clarity are amazing. Also, I used the Ski Tracker app to measure my speed & distance.

VIDEO ITINERARY:
1. Best Time To Visit
2. History of the Area
3. Animals & Rare Species

5. Tours at Mesa Verde

FIVE THINGS I LOVED ABOUT MESA VERDE NATIONAL PARK:
1. The Mesa Verde Visitor Center & gift shop is exceptionally nice.
2. The 21-mile drive to the Chapin Mesa Museum and cliff dwellings is beautiful with multiple scenic overlooks along the way.
3. The Spruce Canyon Hiking Trail is great. At 2.3 miles long and 538 feet in elevation gain, it’s the perfect amount of challenge.
4. The cliff dwellings from the year 550 A.D. are super cool. This area was inhabited by the Ancestral Puebloans for more than 700 years.
5. National Parks are a great way to meet fellow outdoor adventurers!

1. BEST TIME TO VISIT MESA VERDE NATIONAL PARK

The park is always open, except under emergency conditions. The Mesa Verde Visitor Center is open nearly all year (only closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Day). Sites, picnic areas, and most trails are open from 8 am until sunset.

Some areas including Wetherill Mesa and overnight accommodations are closed during the winter months. So, be sure to check the park's Facebook page for the most current information on closures.

Now, let’s talk about avoiding the crowds.

With around 600,000 visitors annually, Mesa Verde can seem overly busy at times. But the number of visitors is much lower just before and after the summer rush. The summer rush runs from June 15 through August 15. So, if you visit during the first 2 weeks of June or the last 2 weeks of August, you'll encounter fewer crowds.

Another way to beat the crowds is to make the 12-mile d..

* Is the Four Corners Monument in the Wrong Place?
* Does It Cost To Visit the Four Corners Monument?
* What Is the History of the Four Corners Monument?

The Four Corners National Monument is the only place where four states meet. Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, and Utah all come together in what is called a quadripoint. Well, that’s exactly where the excitement ends!

Ever since I heard about this place in elementary school, I thought it would be so cool to visit someday. So, when I recently traveled from Page, Arizona to Durango, Colorado, I decided to stop and record a quick video.

While my YouTube channel typically highlights exciting places to visit, this video is actually the exact opposite. Today, I’ve got a list of reasons why you probably do NOT want to visit this place:

1. Technically, it’s not even in the right location. The surveyors were a little off when they set the marker in 1875. The U.S. Geodetic Survey states that the quadripoint is 1,807 feet east of where modern surveying technology would place it.

In 1919, New Mexico sued Colorado to correct this border discrepancy. But, in 1925, the Supreme Court ruled that the markers placed during the initial surveys were the actual borders, even if the markers were off in some locations. This includes the Four Corners Monument.

Where the marker is now…is accepted. Once it's adopted by the states, which it has been, the numerical errors are irrelevant. It becomes the legal definition of the Four Corners.

So, when you stand on the monument, you're not technically at the intersection of the four states, but legally you ARE on the quadripoint!

2. It costs $8 to get in, which is exactly $8 too much!
3. The restrooms are old, dirty, and disgusting.
4. The parking lot is both muddy and bumpy.

I’d be fine paying $8 to get in…if the facilities were even remotely maintained.

On a brighter note, my very next video will be at Mesa Verde National Park i..

* Upper Antelope Canyon
* Lower Antelope Canyon
* Antelope Canyon X

As my YouTube channel gets bigger & bigger, I get more people asking me each day, “What is your favorite place to visit?” For the longest time, I wasn’t really sure how to answer that. I love skiing at both Vail & Breckenridge, I love hiking at Glacier National Park, and I love camping at Doris Campground in Oklahoma. But nothing has really secured its spot as being my favorite, that is…until I visited Lower Antelope Canyon in Page, Arizona.

Ever since I saw my first photos of slot canyons many years ago, visiting them has been on my bucket list. The problem was, I really didn’t know where they were located. Zion National Park has an area called “The Narrows”, but that hike requires wading through a bit of water.

Then, I discovered Antelope Canyon in northern Arizona. Unfortunately, the more research I did about the place, the more overwhelmed I became…to the point of me almost NOT going. I had so many questions:

Is it true that I can only visit with a guided tour?
Which one is better: the Lower Antelope Canyon or Upper Antelope Canyon?
Why can’t I record video in the Lower Antelope Canyon?
I found seven guided tour companies. So, which one should I choose?
What time of the day should I go to get good photos?
Why is the price so expensive and why is Lower Antelope Canyon cheaper?
Why can’t I bring my backpack?
What if I make an online reservation and then it rains?

So, the goal of this video is to answer some of these questions. While I do that, I’ll be sharing photos from my visit to the Lower Antelope Canyon on November 25th at 1 pm. I did a bit of research to help us compare the Lower & Upper Antelope Canyons side by side.

First, let me give you a quick overview and then we’ll get into the details…

All areas of the Antelope Canyon are only accessible via a guided tour. Tour Guides are mandatory. Apparently, the guide system was made mandatory aft..

Horseshoe Bend is a horseshoe-shaped bend in the Colorado River, located about 4 miles southwest of Page, Arizona.

It attracts 2.2 million visitors every year and is one of the most photographed sites in northern Arizona.

The mighty Colorado River does a full 180-degree turn at this spot in the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, forming a perfect horseshoe.

It’s located about 5 miles downstream from the Glen Canyon Dam and Lake Powell.

The Horseshoe Bend overlook is accessible by hiking 3/4 of a mile from a parking lot area just off US-89. The overlook is 4,200 feet above sea level, and the Colorado River is at 3,200 feet above sea level, making it a 1,000-foot drop.

The viewpoint has guardrails, but if you go farther down the rim, the view is unprotected. Be very cautious and keep a close eye on children as the sandstone can sometimes be unstable.

Horseshoe Bend is open year-round from sunrise until sunset. The busiest times of the day are from 9:00 am until 11:00 am in the morning and from 4:30 pm until 6:30 pm in the evening. If you enjoy fewer crowds, try scheduling your visit around these busy times. But, you should know…the best photos are taken late morning, midday to early afternoon because the bend and river are in shadow during the other times of the day. At sunset, the sun will be in your eyes and the bend will be in the shadow.

You’re gonna want to plan for about two hours visiting Horseshoe Bend.

National parks and public lands across the country have seen an explosion in tourism in part due to the rise of social media sites like Instagram.

At Horseshoe Bend, tourism has risen from about 4,000 visitors per year to 2.2 million visitors per year! According to the deputy superintendent for Glen Canyon Recreation Area, tourism took off around 2015.
