The term comes from a famous judicial duel in France in 1547, between Guy Chabot de Saint-Gelais, baron de Jarnac and François de Vivonne, seigneur de La Châtaigneraye. It's often used in a derogatory manner, implying that it's a "dirty trick" or some sort of backstab. As my HEMA instructor Erik Bailey and are demonstrating based on our interpretation of different accounts of that duel, it's not so unusual, nor outrageous.

This is the last trip to the shooting range I was able to do before the move from Vancouver Island to Nova Scotia. My friend William tried the 45-70 Springfield Trapdoor (reproduction made by Uberti) and liked it a lot. Definitely a great design for a single shot rifle.

"Which is better, katana or longsword?" "Your thoughts on Chinese swords?" "What is the best sword"? - These are common questions, and they can be a little frustrating at times. :) Why? Because there is a lot more complexity involved...

What type of longsword are you talking about? Which Chinese Dynasty (i.e. time period)? Dao (saber) or jian (straight sword)? Best for what? Battlefield? Armored judicial duel? Unarmored civilian self-defense? Open field? Confined space?

So in this almost 20 min banter video I address a lot of the factors involved in discussing the effectiveness of sword designs. I also compare different Oakeshott types to illustrate the substantial variety. And we're taking a look at katana/longsword hybrids to see how a fusion of different designs works (or doesn't).

The two most favorite swords in my collection:

The Knecht by Albion (Kriegsmesser / "war knife")

Taking a look at the historical accuracy, fit & finish, handling, and blade quality of the Ashdown, a "battle-ready" sword inspired by 9th century Viking designs.

There are good and bad things about it. It's not exceptionally well made but not what I'd call poor quality either. Sort of middle of the road, which is fairly common on the reproduction market in the sub-$300 range. This however is priced at over $300, so that makes me take a harder look at the flaws...

You're probably aware of the High Ground meme from Star Wars: Episode III, where Obi-Wan boldly declared "It's over, Anakin. I have the high ground."

If you've ever wondered how decisive that would actually be in a real life fight with historical swords, this video is for you.

Thanks to my good friend Swordsage for helping out with this video while he was on a visit.

This time I wanted to clear up the confusion around the term "claymore", which is most often incorrectly applied to two-handed swords with the characteristic quatrefoil tipped quillons. The word more accurately refers to the basket-hilted broadsword (or backsword in case of a single-edged blade) which became popular later in Scotland's history.

So next time someone calls something a "claymore" that is not a baskethilt sword you can go full nerd and be like "akshually...". ;)

How to defend against a spear thrust with a staff and a dagger? What to do if you only have two "cudgels" (i.e. wooden branches) and are attacked by a spearman? Is there any chance to ward off a longsword attack with just a dagger? Swordsage brought a number of LK Chen swords to try out. They are reproductions of Han Dynasty (206 BCE-220 CE) designs. I was surprised by how light they felt, while retaining plenty of cutting power.

You can also see the difference in technique when cutting tatami mats. He learned sword handling through Chinese martial arts and utilizes somewhat different body mechanics than what I'm used to from my practice of HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts).

Definitely interesting, and a lot of fun!

In this video I'm discussing some of the available evidence for Viking Age berserkers. Both the archaeological material and the written sources have certain limitations and leave plenty of uncertainties. Interpretation and speculation can conjure different possible historical scenarios, and we have to keep in mind that it's impossible to know with complete certainty who these warriors were and exactly how they operated before and during battles.

Here is my impression of this historically inspired but unusual custom sword (not a full review by my standards due to limited testing).

The asymmetrical handle is quite strange, although more comfortable than it looks. The blade seems to be a longer version of the one on his single handed Thorpe falchion, which I reviewed here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vEFdZv7tFh0

August is crazy busy... Moving is always hectic and sucks, and certainly even more so when going from one side of a continent to the other. It looks like I'll be able to keep the regular video uploads going though, I've finished quite a number ahead of time.

So... finally finding out that you have ADD at the age of 37 is weird. Explains a lot though, and it's good to eventually have a clue of how to tackle the particular challenges you've been dealing with all your life but haven't really understood.

If you haven't seen the review of this sword:

I decided to remove the brass flower ornament on the grip, since I found it uncomfortable and irritating. After some polishing to get rid of epoxy underneath the visible difference irked me enough to decide to polish and re-darken the entire thing. Totally unnecessary but it turned out pretty well in the end. Ammonia vapor creates a nice patina on brass.

I recommend Renaissance Wax for sealing the surface and preventing rust or tarnishing in long term storage. It seems expensive for the amount but it lasts a long time, you only need a very thin coat.

Great design, both functionally and visually. But the material needs some improvement. Fortunately I've gotten a reply from Leon Paul saying that they are planning to improve the steel quality.

All hand forged on Vancouver Island, and it shows. The design is effective, the detail in the craftsmanship is impressive. A light axe head that gradually thins out toward the edge sticks much better, and would also be useful for light chopping, carving, etc.

How could anyone possibly think using a sharp axe in training is a good idea? Oh, the humanity...

I don't normally do this kind of video but it seems like a good opportunity to remind people of the importance of being safe and responsible with their exercise, especially when it comes to martial arts practice involving weapons. I tried to keep it reasonably polite but it's definitely a rant.

Highland Warriors, at the Canadian War Museum
https://bit.ly/2S7cjuZ
From the fierce Gaelic warriors of medieval Scotland to the proud traditions of Canada’s Highland regiments today, trace the history and culture of an enduring military icon.

In this video I talk about swords and other things I've encountered over the years that have failed to impress. Not all of these were inherently bad. Sometimes it was bad lack with an unusually negative personal experience (a lemon, perhaps?), sometimes it was something that simply didn't live up to my expectations for one reason or another. Either way I hope you find this entertaining. :)
