The more eye rollingly obscure and outright boring the financial concept or instrument, the faster most people tune out from its discussions anywhere. ‘Just leave it to those trained to deal with that stuff’, right? Yeah, ok, but that’s how we all get into continuous trouble, and possibly how big banks, hedge funds & so-called regulators prefer it. Because eye rolls lead to skipped institutional oversights, regulations, and eventually, collective conceding to the levels of speculation which lead to flash crashes in markets at the least, or at worst, whole crises like what happened in 2007-2008.

On this week’s episode of The Geopolitical Report, we look at the Yellow Vest revolution in France and the threat of neoliberalism, the media’s effort to memory hole awareness of this threat, and the state’s increasing use of violence. Is it possible this reaction to taxes, austerity, and unchecked globalization will spread to America, and if so will the national security state move to crush it, as it did to political movements in the 1960s and 70s and, more recently, the Occupy Wall Street movement.

In the hundredth edition of the Russian Newspapers Monitor, Professor Filip Kovacevic discusses the front-page articles from four Russian newspapers: Nezavisimaya Gazeta, Kommersant, Izvestia, and Moskovsky Komsomolets. He discusses the expanding Russian military involvement in Syria, including what appears to be the role of the protector of the Kurds in the Manbij area. In addition, Professor Kovacevic examines the strained relations between NASA and the Russian space agency ‘Roskosmos’ which can affect a series of globally important space projects, such as the lunar orbital platform. He also discusses the recent capture of the Russian sailors by pirates in the Gulf of Guinea and whether Russia plans to intervene militarily to free them. Lastly, Professor Kovacevic presents a new investigative report shedding light on the details in the biography of the ex-GRU officer Sergey Skripal not available in the Western press. America is radically expanding its unilateral global reach and coercive tools in order to punish governments that don’t toe the anti-China line.

In this episode, we’ll look at the extension of the anti-Huawei campaign beyond the Five Eyes core intelligence sharing partners and ask the question: What is the factual basis for demanding a ban on Huawei? The answer will surprise you…if you’re a sucker for natsec fairy tales…but maybe not surprise you if you have a firm grasp on U.S. intelligence community objectives, deeds, and misdeeds.

A stock market roller coaster on par with that of a decade ago is back, and essentially for the same reasons. No, not just economic fundamentals involving back-breaking debt, corporate profligacies and geopolitical risks, but because said volatility and the asset destruction-slash-consolidation that results are in part due to much longer-term design. This latest design sees the first investment banker ever to serve as head of the Fed, and one who cut his ‘creative destruction’ teeth at as politically connected of a private equity firm as exists in the global debt-drenched ether. Despite Wall Street veterans and even the President urging Fed Chair Powell to cease or ease back on interest rate hikes into economic weakness, he’s persisting, because in his eyes, nothing is “Too Big to Fail”, as his earlier years as a Fed Governor made clear as well.

Major financial news outlets, past heads of the US Fed & Treasury and central banks are at this point not so quietly warning about not just an approaching recession, but quite possibly another global financial crisis. From the Bank for International Settlements – which is the central bank to central banks – to Ben Bernanke, Hank Paulson, Tim Geithner & Alan Greenspan, to the Financial Times, Wall Street Journal & their imitators, essentially tacit confirmations of regulatory failures to fully recover the economy from the 2008 Financial Crisis are being politely put forward to an increasingly nervous, war-weary public. Yet no credible preventative solutions are being proffered; only admissions that the next crisis will be much harder to cope with because most of the available policy ammo was used up in fighting the prior crisis a decade ago.

The hot story in China watching is the arrest in Vancouver on December 1st of Meng Wanzhou, the Chief Financial Officer of China telecom giant Huawei, on charges relating to violation of US sanctions against Iran.
Even though there is no recorded precedent for arresting a corporate executive for fraud on a sanctions beef with the threat of 30 years in prison, this blatant act of economic and legal warfare was vigorously defended by mainstream scribes as just another example of the superior Western system of rule of law, to be contrasted with the lousy non rule of law thing that China uses to intimidate and extort its adversaries around the world.

On this episode of the Geopolitical Report, I take a look at the career and death of the Bush dynasty patriarch, George H. W. Bush. Following his death, the corporate propaganda media showered Bush with praise. He was portrayed as kind and gentle, a remarkable and humble former statesman. As should be expected, the media completely ignored the dark side of the first Bush administration and its pioneering of endless war. It began with Bush’s invasion of Panama and later Iraq. Minus news coverage and analysis by Newsbud and others, Bush’s bloody stain on history would remain largely hidden in the shadows.

The China Witch Hunt is here.
A joint project of the Asia Society and the Hoover Institute produced a study on China influence operations and how to counter them.

It touts “transparency, integrity, and reciprocity” as the magic bullets to combat Chinese influence.

Unfortunately, past history and current reality tell us when panic about a foreign threat roams the land, the dirty work of anti-influence campaigns in America is not a matter of transparency, integrity, and reciprocity; it’s more about secret denunciations, moral capitulation, and smears and blacklists to short circuit due process, all orchestrated by the national security services.

In other words, Witch Hunt!

Wait…how is it that Japan retains the third strongest national economy on earth, yet is still more or less stuck in the same deflationary tepid growth and runaway debt which it sank into starting from the tactical implementation of the Plaza and Louvre Accords back in 1985 and 1987, respectively? How is Japan’s historical foe and seeming economic rival China learning from those 30+ year-old agreements what NOT to do in its searing trade war with the US, which is getting more acrimonious by the month?

Think back to when you saw that first Star Wars movie from 1977, and how the Death Star – this massive, cold, metal, ruthless, demonic Imperial battle station the size of a moon – was armed, mobilized & brutal enough to outright zap entire planets to bits from open space with its harnessed, martialized, concentrated, instantaneously deployable laser beam. “That’s no moon”, exclaimed the late great Sir Alec Guinness as the sorcerously prescient, Force-dripping Obi Wan.
Well the modern day equivalent of the Death Star’s punitive, insidious laser beam, in macro-financial and thus geopolitical terms, is the seemingly, innocuously named Exchange Stabilization Fund – or ESF

Humans have a passion for order. But somehow much of what they produce is chaos. Chaos creates confusion, danger, which, if properly exploited, a source of opportunity and advantage.

The Chinese idiom for this is “fishing in muddy waters”. The fish don’t see you, so you can sneak up on them and scoop them up.

Right now the United States China hawk community is trying to impose order—an anti-PRC order—on the disparate economic, diplomatic, and military policies of the U.S. itself, its allies, its assets, and its enemies.

China is trying to blur those lines, and encourage the system to trend away from order to, if not chaos, muddiness.

This was a good week for muddiness.

Remember when the oil price shot up to an unprecedented level of nearly $150 a barrel a decade ago, right in the middle of the Global Financial Crisis? Odd timing, huh? How, during that general fiscal fear & mayhem, this manic run-up in price of the most important industrial commodity on earth forced you to feel serious pain at the fuel pump alongside property prices dropping, only to then watch as the oil price plummeted more than 70% within six months?

Pure supply & demand, was it all? Or something else? And why, after over a year and a half of oil’s price remaining below $60 a barrel, has the price started to rise in the fashion that it has again over the past year? Any coincidence between this oil price spike and the fact that the stock market is starting to correct as it did ten years ago?

The murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi has dominated the news headlines. Americans are outraged by this brutal act of murder and dismemberment at the Saudi consulate in Turkey and yet few seem outraged by the government helping the Saudis kill thousands of people in Yemen. The crimes of the cruel medieval monarchy in Saudi Arabia are permitted and swept under the rug for two simple reasons—first, the desert kingdom has a whole lot of oil, and second it’s strategically located in the Persian Gulf where the US has stationed its Fifth Fleet to counterbalance its enemies, most prominently Iran. This is the dynamic driving what the US will do in response to the murder of Jamal Khashoggi. Will Trump end the supposedly special relationship with Saudi Arabia? It’s a crucial link in the neoliberal order and a vital component of petrodollar system. Is it possible one dead journalist will endanger the special relationship?

We look at recent developments in the burgeoning US campaign against the PRC, and find grounds for optimism, reasons to order that leadlined anti-radiation suit off Amazon, and some trainwreck stuff you simply can’t look away from. In Australia. Of course.
As usual, China is trying to dodge polarization and confrontation. And, as has been the case since the Pentagon gained control over the US government’s China policy apparatus, the US has been trying to push China into a strategic and geopolitical corner. And Australia has been working mightily to prove itself as America’s most loyal and obedient asset in Asia.
