Important findings: There were only 50,000 slaves in America at the time of the ratification of the Constitution in 1788 - most were WHITE. White slaves have been written off as "indentured servants" who served 4-7 year terms. These indentured servants only make up a small fraction of the hundreds of thousands of Whites who were enslaved for the entirety of their lives. Whites remained slaves until the Emancipation Proclamation.
