What better way to honor this 93rd episode than by talking about the life and work of the notorious Aleister Crowley. The Great Beast himself, the wickedest man in the world, the man who’s performed more sex magick rituals than there are pages in the book we’re about to discuss, and that’s a lot of pages, folks. 705 of them in this book called Perdurabo by our guest, Dr. Richard Kaczynski.

Richard is also the author of The Weiser Concise Guide to Aleister Crowley. He has been a student of the Western hermetic tradition since 1978, and has lectured internationally on these topics since 1990. His writing has appeared in numerous magazines and books, including High Times, Concordance to the Holy Books of Thelema, and The Golden Dawn Sourcebook. Richard is also a research scientist and statistician with the VA Northeast Program Evaluation Center, and Kaczynski is also affiliated with Yale University's School of Medicine (Department of Psychiatry).

Richard and I are gonna essentially make our way nearly chronologically through Crowley’s life, and if you’re on Patreon you’re getting nearly two hours of show here. But if you’re not you’re only getting that first hour. And, of all the shows you want to hear in their entirety, this is the one you really don’t want to miss, because you’re only getting half the story. Patreon.com/occulture is the destination for the whole shebang, and it’s as little as $2 a month.

George Pendle is the author of the book Strange Angel: The Otherworldly Life of John Whiteside Parsons, which if ya haven’t heard has been adapted to series for CBS All-Access, and it’s airing there right now, as you read this.

George makes his way into the house to talk a bit about what it was like to research and write about Jack Parsons, some of the atmosphere and aesthetic around him that shaped who he became, and his thoughts on Jack Parsons going mainstream.

Joe Atwill is in the house to talk about his work on typology and weaponized anthropology, which focuses on the crucial fiction known as the New Testament as well as the works of Shakespeare, JD Salinger, Ken Kesey, George Orwell and more.

Joe has a new book forthcoming called The Secret Language of Oligarchs, and this is hopefully part one of a two-part series that will lay the foundation for what is a thought-provoking journey behind the curtain that reveals a symbolic framework employed by scribes throughout history. There’s about a 20-25 minute Patreon extension with Joe. More on that after the chat, which will provide you with a healthy dose of skepticism, conspiracy and questioning of authorities.

If you’ve been here before you know we have always questioned authority, and that doesn’t just extend to the usual suspects - ya know, the government, the church, the corporations. We questions all kinds of authority. And our guest this time around has been doing exactly that, but he’s taken it a step further and turned his attention towards authorities who are part of the occulture, for lack of a better term.

His name is Jasun Horsley and he’s recently published a book called Prisoner of Infinity: UFOs, Social Engineering & the Psychology of Fragmentation. And when I first came across it that title immediately hooked me and then when I read the synopsis, I sat back in my chair and said, “Well, I have to read this.”

In addition to this book, Jasun has authored seven previous books with another one coming in early 2019 that builds on his work from Prisoner of Infinity. Jasun also hosts his own podcast called The Liminalist, and has a blog called Auticulture, which is a portmanteau of autism and culture. The autism portion of that is an interesting angle, and we do talk a bit about that right up front here.

Really, this is one of the more interesting pieces of research I’ve read, and Jasun is one of the more interesting people I’ve met since I’ve started doing this. This conversation will ruffle some feathers. And his book will ruffle some feathers (and already has).

There’s a Patreon extension here too, another 30 minutes. More on that after the chat, which might not be an easy one to get through. This may not be for you.

My oh my what a guest we have this time around. Gary Lachman has brought his imagination to the house party, and we’ll be chatting a bit about two of his recent books, Lost Knowledge of the Imagination and Dark Star Rising: Magick and Power in the Age of Trump.

Those two books are just a couple of the now more than 20 Gary has authored on topics ranging from the evolution of consciousness to literary suicides, popular culture and the history of the occult. Gary is one of, and may be the, pre-eminent esoteric scholar in the game today. Some of you know him as Gary Valentine from the band Blondie, others know him as a biographer of names like Aleister Crowley, Rudolf Steiner, Carl Jung, Helena Blavatsky and Colin Wilson.

And after this chat, all of you will know him as woke af, because Gary is going to illuminate the dark recesses of the sociopolitical imagination, which features a pro wrestling hall of famer as the current sitting US president, a team of Russian propagandists creating this wonderful postmodern theatre, and a cartoon frog that’s been passed around so much on the internet you’d think its name was Stormy.

I am so pleased and so honored to welcome this particular guest into the house. His name is Greg Kaminsky, and he is the host of a podcast called Occult of Personality. I was trying to think of a good analogy for Greg and I coming together, and the best one I could think of is the first time you heard Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg together.

Greg is the podfather - Doggfather? - of occult podcasts. We’ll talk a bit about how he became that, and then we’re gonna dig into one of my favorite topics and talk about one of my favorite dudes to ever do this damn thing: Giovanni Pico della Mirandola. Such a fascinating figure with some downright heretical ideas. And Greg is gonna creep to the mic like a phantom and parse out this story for us over the course of the next hour.

So sit back, relax, and strap on your seatbelt, because you’ve never been on a ride like this before, with a producer who can rap and control the maestro. It’s time to roll another dope episode up and take a toke but don’t choke, because if ya do, you’ll have no clue what me and my homie Greg Kaminsky came to do.

Our guest this time around is a blogger who goes by the name Recluse. He’s one of the more impressive alternative bloggers in the game today, and after this one you will know why. This is a bit of a unique episode, because it’s part one of a series Recluse and I have agreed to do with each other based on some blogs he’s written about one of the lesser known and lesser discussed sources of power in times both past and present.

Some of you have probably heard of the Catholic military order known as the Knights of Malta, and after this series you’ll know more about them than you’d ever want to know. What some of you probably haven’t heard of is their connection to a host of other shadowy groups that have ties to governments, organized religions, banks, multinational corporations, intelligence agencies, killers-for-hire and mafiosos across the world.

This is the beginning of a story that brings together the church’s historical interest in the occult, population control and political subversion. It is, as Recluse has labeled it, a strange and terrible journey into the heart of the deep state.

Nick Redfern makes his way into the house for the first time. Nick is the author of damn near 50 books on various paranormal and fortean topics, and we’ll be chatting be about one of his latest books, The Slenderman Mysteries: An Internet Urban Legend Comes to Life.

If you’re not familiar with the Slenderman phenomenon, be prepared to get familiar, because we’re gonna give you all the crazy details of it, as well as take some detours into the worlds of HP Lovecraft, Alexandra David-Neel, Dion Fortune, Aleister Crowley and Coast to Coast AM, and we’ll touch on some Slenderman-type mythos from before Slendy himself was even a meme.

Robert Sullivan IV is in the house. Rob is here to talk about - well, about a little bit of everything. He’s written four books and we touch on them all throughout the conversation. His latest book is a horror novel called A Pact With the Devil. Of course, Rob’s most well-known for traveling the fringe-y podcast circuit to dissect the occult symbolism in film. He’s one of the very best in the game at doing that. He’s written two books on the subject, Cinema Symbolism and Cinema Symbolism 2. And then we’ll also touch on his first book, The Royal Arch of Enoch: The Impact of Masonic Ritual, Philosophy and Symbolism.

Rob is a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Freemason so he’s well-versed in the occult and esoteric, and after 90 minutes you’ll know it for sure.

If you’re on Patreon, you’re getting all 90 minutes, and if you’re not you’re getting the first 60. So head over to patreon.com/occulture to hear this in its entirety.

I will not lie to you, good people. The conversation you’re about to hear is one of the most enlightening and one of the most personal that you’ll ever hear on this show.

And I have to thank our guest Niles Heckman for that. He brought a really cool idea to me for the chat, and I had no idea what to expect before we hit the record button, but what transpired, I think, is pretty inspiring. Niles is a multimedia savant. He’s a writer, photographer, podcaster and the man behind the films Shamans of the Global Village and the forthcoming Transmutation. He’s also a frequent guest on my friend Ed Liu’s Psychedelic Milk podcast.

And what we did here was, we talk a lot about our own growth and maturation, how it applies to our creations and our art, and then looked at how a man named Lyman Frank Baum followed a similar path to create maybe the most recognizable fairy tale in the history of art, The Wizard of Oz. Some of you may have heard of that.

The Wizard of Oz part of this, though, is actually the second hour of the chat, and if you’re not supporting the show on Patreon, you’re only getting the first half of this. So, if you want to hear this in its entirety, head over to Patreon.com/occulture to support the show for as little as $2 a month. That’ll get you access to extensions like this one as I continue to enhance and expand my Patreon content. And this is the first time I’ve really tried the whole first hour free, second hour for patrons thing. It’s worth it too, because what we talk about in the first hour is really a blueprint for Baum’s creation of The Wizard of Oz and all the esoteric and occult symbolism found within it. And there’s quite a bit of it, actually.

Miguel also describes himself as a garage philosopher and hedge historian. Hey yo, so I recently chatted with author and friend of the show Linda Raedisch for Occulture RAW, a bonus feature for $5+ patrons over at patreon.com/occulture. We chatted about Walpurgisnacht, the Night of the Witches, which is on the night of April 30. Big celebration in certain parts of Germany and Scandinavia. We also chatted about Linda’s Germanic roots, fairy tales and books, including her newest book, which is a fantasy novella where the main character is a castle.

Chris Bennett has been researching the historical role of cannabis in magic and religion for over a quarter century. He’s written three previous books: Green Gold the Tree of Life: Marijuana in Magic and Religion; Sex, Drugs, Violence and the Bible; and Cannabis and the Soma Solution. But he’s here because today, Friday, April 20, he’s just released his most comprehensive book yet. It’s called Liber 420: Cannabis, Magickal Herbs & the Occult, and it is literally anything and everything you’d want to know about the occulted use of cannabis in religion, mystery traditions, magickal rituals, alchemy and much more, and we’re gonna talk a bit about that.

Chris joined me via cell phone, so the audio is good, but not great. And we covered a lot of ground in a short amount of time. And, honestly, this one is pretty chill and relaxed, as one might expect given the content. So do yourself a favor and make like Chong, and fire this one up, and take a hit from this audio bong.

We’ve got a hell of a show here for you this time around. We're gonna talk about one of my favorite topics in the world, maybe my favorite actually: John Dee. And who better to do that with than Jason Louv, author of "John Dee and the Empire of Angels".

What a conversation we have in store for you this time around. Alkistis Dimech is in the house. She’s the co-founder of Scarlet Imprint, perhaps the finest occult publishing house going today. But Alkistis is so much more than that. She’s a dancer and choreographer and a student of music and theater and the arts. She also kinda-sorta took me to task on Twitter not too long ago, and rightly so, and - well, you’ll hear about that too.
