Chris Knowles is the synchromystic mind behind The Secret Sun, a blog that should be required reading for any open-minded types out there.

Some of you are no doubt aware of Chris’s work on his blog, and if you’re not, you’ll get a crash course here. And just a crash course, not a deep dive. Because Chris is so much more than just his blog. He’s also the author or co-author of three books, the Eagle Award-winning “Our Gods Wear Spandex: The Secret History of Comic Book Heroes”, “The Complete X-Files: Behind the Series, the Myths, and the Movies”, and “The Secret History of Rock 'n' Roll”. He’s also had a career in the advertising, publishing and entertainment fields.

All of that forms the basis for our chat here, about Jack Kirby, black magick LARPs, and if you’re on Patreon, the siren of the philosophers.

Happy Halloween or Samhain or Day of the Dead or whatever you may be celebrating this time of year.

And we have an apropos show for you this time around. Dacre Stoker and JD Barker are in the house. They are the co-authors of the recently released novel Dracul, the official Stoker-family endorsed prequel to the original Dracula story. Very cool, very excited to have them here for our annual Halloween episode.

As you will hear in the chat, Dacre is the great grand-nephew of Bram Stoker, the author of that original Dracula story. Dacre is a former teacher and athletics coach; he even coached for Canada during the Olympics. But he’s made the transition to full-time writer and speaker. He gives presentations about Bram and Dracula, takes folks on tours of sites related to the Dracula mythos as well as the real-life inspiration for the character, Vlad the Impaler. And, along with his wife, manages the Bram Stoker Estate.

JD is an international best-selling author whose work has been broadly described as suspense thrillers, often incorporating elements of horror, crime, mystery, science fiction and the supernatural. His first novel Forsaken was nominated for a Bram Stoker Award for Best Debut Novel and won a handful of others including a New Apple Medalist Award. Any occult fans out there would definitely enjoy that novel. And that Bram Stoker nomination is what led to this Dracul collaboration.

So let’s close our eyes and hope that this vampire thing is just imagination, but something tells me sooner or later you’ll hear that creature creepin’ up behind. And when it does--well, no mere mortal can resist.

You won’t find too many people who work in and around paranormalia like our guest this time around. His name is Joshua Cutchin, and he’s the author of the recently released Thieves in the Night: A Brief History of Supernatural Child Abductions.

Thieves in the Night deals with complex and delicate issues pertaining to human sexuality, reproduction, mental health, and gender, with a particular focus on the Faery Faith and the parallels to UFO and extraterrestrial abduction experiences.

And as Josh himself notes in his intro to the book, this should be treated as a thought experiment and launching point for further discussion and debate of the paranormal, rather than objective truths. Which is an approach I can absolutely get down with.

And get down with that approach Josh and I most definitely did.

I remember the first time I sat down and watched Night of the Living Dead. I was 16 years old, and I rented the VHS tape, no joke, from my local video store. Around this time of year. And I was blown away by the aesthetic of the film, the black and white, the social commentary, and what I would later come to know as the zombie motif in fiction.

And I’ve been - not obsessed - but heavily interested in this motif since then. And I’ve been looking for someone to chat with about it for two years now. Because not only is the zombie an integral part of horror fiction and greater pop culture, it’s an integral part for an entire sociopolitical and religious structure that emanates in Haiti.
You wouldn’t know that if all you know about the zombie is from George Romero films or Walking Dead comic books. Thankfully, our guest this time, Dr John Cussans, is in the house to dig deep into the history of the zombie and tell us about something he calls the zombie complex.
John is an artist, writer and educator based in London with an academic background in art history and theory, and cultural history. His work is informed by critical re-evaluations of anthropological theory in the mid 20th century, and investigates patterns of theoretical and practical convergence between contemporary art, philosophy, psychology, social movements and popular culture from a post-colonial and anti-imperialist perspective.
That is the foundation for his book Undead Uprising: Haiti, Horror and the Zombie Complex, which explores the uses of Haiti as a locus for Euro-American fears about African culture and spirituality in the Americas, and their sublimation into popular horror tropes, and which forms the basis for our chat here.

Our guest this time is one of the first guests to share the airwaves with me. His name is Peter Bebergal, and he’s written maybe the coolest book you’ll read this year. Actually there’s no maybe about it. It’s the coolest. It’s called Strange Frequencies: The Extraordinary Story of the Technological Quest for the Supernatural, and it’s a journey through the attempts artists, scientists, and tinkerers have made to imagine and communicate with the otherworldly using various technologies, from cameras to radiowaves to maybe even something like this here podcast.

Which makes sense, because technology has been used for centuries to bridge the gap between the material and the mystical, revealing that the workshop and the séance parlor have more in common than we might think. And if technology is the bridge between worlds, then I say we’re living in the most magical time in recorded human history.

Dr. Al Cummins is in the house to chat about some of the forbidden arts, as they were known during the Renaissance: a few different forms of divination, including geomancy, which Al is gearing up to teach here very soon. More on that after the chat. And also cartomancy, which both fascinates and excites me, probably in an unhealthy, strange sort of way.

Of course, Al is a professional diviner and historian, as well as a poet and a consultant of all things magical. His approach to ritual, divination, and sorcery comes from both a long-term practice and an academic background in the history of early modern magic.

And we put that background to the test at the very end of this chat. We had a little fun, and if you’re a patron, there’s something really cool in store for a couple of you here soon.

Michael Wann is going to talk about the Kavanaugh-Ford story here, but more on a psychological, symbolic, archetypal level. We’re not getting political about it. We’re not dismissing the allegations or the claims of anyone involved. We recognize the systemic cultural problems that this story highlights. We’re just not talking about them directly. I guess you could say we’re looking at a more occulted layer of what this story represents. We’ll also touch on the connection between the Kavanaugh-Ford story and the recent UFC fight between Conor McGregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov, as well as Kanye West, SNL, Donald Trump and pro wrestling.

It’s the first of October so you know what that means. It’s time to get a bit spooky. And who better to get spooky with than Tracy Twyman. Because I’ll tell ya, every time I listen to her talk, I get the bejesus scared out of me. She’s real, she’s raw, and she brought something fierce here.

Of course, Tracy needs no introduction. She’s been here before in episode 58 to discuss her novel Genuflect and some of the wild ass ideas she threw in there. I’d recommend listening to that first if ya haven’t heard it yet. It’ll give some further context to this discussion. But not completely necessary.

Tracy’s had quite an interesting trip around the sun since then, though, and she will tell us all about it, or as much as she wanted to about it, and how she sees it all connecting inside this Metaverse we seem to be living in.

Anyway, I’ll tell you who does have the grammar thing down. William Shakespeare. Or Shack-speare. Or Shake-spears. If you’re like me and you’re a fan of short stories, detective fiction and the occult, then a book like The Weiser Book of Occult Detectives is something you rush to pick up at the old brick-and-mortar. So imagine my delight when that exact book arrived unexpectedly on my doorstep one day. And imagine my further delight to see Judika Illes’ name on the front cover.

Because, even if you’re not that into the occult, if you don’t know much about the people who write in this genre, Judika’s name is one you’ve seen if you’ve wandered through any bookstore. Sadly, if you’re wandering through one of those chain bookstores, her books are typically lumped into the New Age section and relegated to a dimly lit corner. But any curious bookworm will have undoubtedly seen her name at the bottom of a spine on those shelves, and that is exactly how this curious bookworm first learned the name of Judika llles.

Judika is, of course, a prolific scholar, educator and author of several books of folklore, folkways, and mythology about the subjects of magic, the occult, divination, diverse spiritual traditions, witchcraft, and the paranormal. I originally reached out to her to discuss The Weiser Book of Occult Detectives, but as it turned out, that was only a drop in the old cauldron, because this chat took us in all kinds of directions. You might say it turned out to be a bit encyclopedic itself, because we wandered through many pages of the occult encyclopedia, and I think you will dig each and every one of them.

Our guest this time around is Aidan Wachter, talismanic jewelry maker and author of the recently released “Six Ways: Approaches & Entries for Practical Magick”, which is the basis for our conversation here today.

This book really struck me in some feel spots as I was reading through it, and you will hear a bit about why and how it did that. Six Ways is a handbook of practical sorcery and magic, as Aidan knows and works it.

He says that, “Magic and sorcery have many definitions, and will have many more as we move as a species forward through time. The basic idea is that there are ways of being and interacting in the world that allow for certain kinds of communication, the production of change on both internal and external levels, and the development of what could be called 'special skills and talents'. These are psychic powers or arts, in the old usage of the word: meaning 'relative to the soul, spirit, mind'. These arts of soul, spirit, and mind come down to us in various ways. They come as full-blown systems of magic or witchcraft, as religious practices, as shamanry, as tales and ideas surviving via folklore, song, and literature.”

And if you’ve been listening to the show here for a while, it should come as no surprise that that description, which comes directly from Aidan’s book, is firmly my jam, as the older kids like to say.

Hey yo, so I recently chatted with Alan Brunton, the CEO of a startup called Cymatrax. Alan is planning to launch an app that scrubs white noise and bad frequencies from audio files and replaces them with better frequencies. If you know anything about the history of the podcast here or have been a listener since its inception, you’ve probably heard me talking about experimenting with frequencies myself, which I’ve done since the jump. I’ve recorded episodes at 432, 528 and now 320 Hz, as opposed to the standard 440 or 441. And Alan is approaching this app with the same sort of mentality. There’s a long history of frequency manipulation and sound weaponization against populations, some of which we’ll get into. But the intent of this chat is not to delve too deep into the history or the conspiracy of this subject, but instead to focus on a practical, modern solution to a damn near undetectable problem that affects us all, whether we realize it or not.

You couldn't ask for a more dynamic personality to be in the house than Dr. Amy Hale, whose work on British Surrealist and esotericist Ithell Colquhoun is the foundation for our conversation here.

Amy is a scholar of all things occult and esoteric, and has a PhD in Folklore and Mythology from UCLA. Her research and writing ranges from contemporary Cornwall to modern Pagan and occult subcultures in the United States and the United Kingdom. She’s written about topics as diverse as modern Druidry, Cornish ethnonationalism, Pagan religious tourism, color theory, the occult, and extremist politics in modern Paganism. We’ll touch on some of those ideas and concepts throughout our chat here.

One note: Amy’s audio did have some inconsistencies in terms of volume, but I enhanced what I could, so hopefully it’s not too bad.

A lot of names on the marquee for this one, and that’s because we’re discussing the Process Church of the Final Judgment with a few folks who know a thing or two about it.

First up, Neil Edwards, the director and producer and - well, he did about everything for his documentary on the Process Church. It’s called Sympathy for the Devil?, and after more than two years of screening the film, it’s finally out for mass consumption on home video, so dust off that VCR because it’s well worth the time.

Neil’s film gets behind the veils of the cult known as the Process and tracks their journey from their formation in London’s prestigious Mayfair district, through wilderness experiences in Mexico, flirtations with pop royalty, and their spread stateside that resulted in them being ‘christened’ ‘one of the most dangerous satanic cults in America’.

The film features contributions and insights from filmmaker John Waters, musician George Clinton, artist Genesis P-Orridge, and several renowned authors, including Gary Lachman, former guest here. It also features commentary from leading former members of the cult, including Edward Mason, who’s also in the house to deliver a ton of inside perspective on the group.

And if that isn’t enough, we’re also joined by Jeff Wolfe, who blogs at SecretTransmissions.com and holds a lifelong interest in the theology and psychology of the Process. This is Jeff’s fourth appearance on the show, and he brought a slew of great questions and valuable insights, especially in the Patreon extension, where we want from a foursome, to a threesome, to just Jeff and I chatting. So, an interesting format and progression here for those of you listening on Patreon. And if you’re not and you want to, and believe me, you’ll want to, patreon.com/occulture is the place to be.

Our guests this time around are Tayannah Lee McQuillar and Katelan Foisy. They have recently collaborated on a project called The Sibyls Oraculum: Oracle of the Black Doves of Africa, which is a system of divination inspired by the Libyan Sibyls, the African prophetesses of the classical world.

The deck was created by Tayannah, a tarot reader and researcher of religion, esoterica, and mysticism, and drawn by Katelan, a visual artist, writer, and occultist who specializes in vintage style mixed media art and photography.

This contemporary oracle pays homage to the oft forgotten African founding mothers of the sibylline traditions. Drawing on both the African and the Classical traditions, the card art is in a style reminiscent of the Libyan mosaics popular in the 1st century B.C.E. And in the deck’s accompanying guidebook, Tayannah details how to consult the oracle, providing in-depth write-ups about the meaning of each of the 44 cards and the symbolic language represented by each card’s imagery. There’s also a history of the Sibyls of the ancient world and an exploration of the continuing Sibyl tradition in North Africa today.

But the framework for our conversation here comes from the true intention of the deck, which is to directly address the spiritual lessons underlying the seeker’s question, and to facilitate self-examination and decision-making, and help improve the likelihood of success and broaden the perspective of the situation.

Now, we did have some audio and connection issues, so that cut this chat a bit shorter than usual. You will notice Tayannah’s connection got better about halfway through, because we had to reconnect a couple times during this call. But please do stick with it, because I quite liked it, all things considered. And I hope you do as well.

Jason Louv is back in the house. And why wouldn't he be? We had maybe my favorite chat this year back in episode 77. I think we damn near tore the house down with that one. So if you haven't heard that one yet, I’d slather that across your earholes first and then come back to this one.

But, like any good sequel, this one stands alone, on its own. And you can judge for yourself if it lives up to the first one.

Jason is, of course, the author of the recently released John Dee and the Empire of Angels. He's also written and edited a slew of other books and teaches magic at his website Magick.Me. And he's also the guy who is fresh off a rather entertaining Skeptiko appearance which left me with both a chuckle and a reminder of why I no longer listen to that podcast.

Anyway, in this episode Jason and I will be chatting a bit about John Dee’s mentors and syncretic beliefs, Dee’s interest in cryptography and if the Enochian tables could be elaborate ciphers, and Jason gets really into this idea of unlocking substrate consciousness with Enochian magick, which is an interesting idea, to say the least.

Independent researcher Michael Wann is in the house to introduce us to what he calls the Susquehanna mystery.

Mike has uncovered a potential nexus of advanced-level conspiracy and occult history that centers around both the Susquehanna River, which starts in New York state and empties into the Chesapeake Bay, as well as the 40th parallel.

This is a story that also has connections to John Dee and the Enochian system, as well as the technological singularity. Really, there's a ton of data here and it can be quite difficult to parse through it all in even two hours. If you're a patron, however, there's another two hours coming with Mike on this subject, and if you're not a patron and want more, please do check out patreon.com/occulture.

I should also note that due to length of this - it clocked in at 3.5 hours in total - I did not do as much post production on this as I usually do. So if you hear more breath noises or uhhs and umms than usual, I do apologize.

The one and only Thomas Sheridan is in the house. Thomas is the author of Sorcery: The Invocation of Strangeness, self-published recently on Lulu.com, and the book focuses on magic as a real force in the world employed by powerful people, as most of us overstand by now, but it’s an honest and practical approach to defending yourself against that force.

This is one of the best books on the subject I’ve read, and one of the most entertaining, because not only it is narrated by one of the most outspoken sorcerers you’ll find anywhere, it also contains a ton of awesome stories and anecdotes. And as Thomas describes himself in his Facebook profile, he has no interest in waking you up, he’s here to improve the quality of your dreaming. And hopefully after an hour (or two if you’re a patron), your dreams will be much improved.

Carl Abrahamsson is back in the house for the second time. You may remember the first time earlier this year, when Carl engaged in some sonically transmitted discourse with Mitch Horowitz. A really popular, well-received episode, but one where I had some questions left unanswered from Carl’s latest book, which is aptly titled Occulture: The Unseen Forces That Drive Culture Forward. So consider this is the redux of the meta-analysis that we began back in episode 67.

This is a bit of a shorter episode than most due to some unforeseen circumstances. But I will say that it is jam-packed with some of the best and most satisfying conversation I think I’ve been able to produce. And that is strictly because of Carl and his book.

This one will definitely kickstart your heart chakra. It has what I can only call a great rhythm throughout. So let's rock and roll to the beat of the funk fuzz and wipe your feet really good on the rhythm rug, and if you feel the urge to freak - well you know what to do.

What better way to honor this 93rd episode than by talking about the life and work of the notorious Aleister Crowley. The Great Beast himself, the wickedest man in the world, the man who’s performed more sex magick rituals than there are pages in the book we’re about to discuss, and that’s a lot of pages, folks. 705 of them in this book called Perdurabo by our guest, Dr. Richard Kaczynski.

Richard is also the author of The Weiser Concise Guide to Aleister Crowley. He has been a student of the Western hermetic tradition since 1978, and has lectured internationally on these topics since 1990. His writing has appeared in numerous magazines and books, including High Times, Concordance to the Holy Books of Thelema, and The Golden Dawn Sourcebook. Richard is also a research scientist and statistician with the VA Northeast Program Evaluation Center, and Kaczynski is also affiliated with Yale University's School of Medicine (Department of Psychiatry).

Richard and I are gonna essentially make our way nearly chronologically through Crowley’s life, and if you’re on Patreon you’re getting nearly two hours of show here. But if you’re not you’re only getting that first hour. And, of all the shows you want to hear in their entirety, this is the one you really don’t want to miss, because you’re only getting half the story. Joe Atwill is in the house to talk about his work on typology and weaponized anthropology, which focuses on the crucial fiction known as the New Testament as well as the works of Shakespeare, JD Salinger, Ken Kesey, George Orwell and more.

Joe has a new book forthcoming called The Secret Language of Oligarchs, and this is hopefully part one of a two-part series that will lay the foundation for what is a thought-provoking journey behind the curtain that reveals a symbolic framework employed by scribes throughout history. There’s about a 20-25 minute Patreon extension with Joe. More on that after the chat, which will provide you with a healthy dose of skepticism, conspiracy and questioning of authorities.

If you’ve been here before you know we have always questioned authority, and that doesn’t just extend to the usual suspects - ya know, the government, the church, the corporations. We questions all kinds of authority. And our guest this time around has been doing exactly that, but he’s taken it a step further and turned his attention towards authorities who are part of the occulture, for lack of a better term.

His name is Jasun Horsley and he’s recently published a book called Prisoner of Infinity: UFOs, Social Engineering & the Psychology of Fragmentation. And when I first came across it that title immediately hooked me and then when I read the synopsis, I sat back in my chair and said, “Well, I have to read this.”

In addition to this book, Jasun has authored seven previous books with another one coming in early 2019 that builds on his work from Prisoner of Infinity. Jasun also hosts his own podcast called The Liminalist, and has a blog called Auticulture, which is a portmanteau of autism and culture. The autism portion of that is an interesting angle, and we do talk a bit about that right up front here.

Really, this is one of the more interesting pieces of research I’ve read, and Jasun is one of the more interesting people I’ve met since I’ve started doing this. This conversation will ruffle some feathers. And his book will ruffle some feathers (and already has).

There’s a Patreon extension here too, another 30 minutes. More on that after the chat, which might not be an easy one to get through. This may not be for you.

My oh my what a guest we have this time around. Gary Lachman has brought his imagination to the house party, and we’ll be chatting a bit about two of his recent books, Lost Knowledge of the Imagination and Dark Star Rising: Magick and Power in the Age of Trump.

Those two books are just a couple of the now more than 20 Gary has authored on topics ranging from the evolution of consciousness to literary suicides, popular culture and the history of the occult. Gary is one of, and may be the, pre-eminent esoteric scholar in the game today. Some of you know him as Gary Valentine from the band Blondie, others know him as a biographer of names like Aleister Crowley, Rudolf Steiner, Carl Jung, Helena Blavatsky and Colin Wilson.

And after this chat, all of you will know him as woke af, because Gary is going to illuminate the dark recesses of the sociopolitical imagination, which features a pro wrestling hall of famer as the current sitting US president, a team of Russian propagandists creating this wonderful postmodern theatre, and a cartoon frog that’s been passed around so much on the internet you’d think its name was Stormy.

I am so pleased and so honored to welcome this particular guest into the house. His name is Greg Kaminsky, and he is the host of a podcast called Occult of Personality. I was trying to think of a good analogy for Greg and I coming together, and the best one I could think of is the first time you heard Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg together.

Greg is the podfather - Doggfather? - of occult podcasts. We’ll talk a bit about how he became that, and then we’re gonna dig into one of my favorite topics and talk about one of my favorite dudes to ever do this damn thing: Giovanni Pico della Mirandola. Such a fascinating figure with some downright heretical ideas. And Greg is gonna creep to the mic like a phantom and parse out this story for us over the course of the next hour.

So sit back, relax, and strap on your seatbelt, because you’ve never been on a ride like this before, with a producer who can rap and control the maestro. It’s time to roll another dope episode up and take a toke but don’t choke, because if ya do, you’ll have no clue what me and my homie Greg Kaminsky came to do.
