The Importance of Being Earnest, A Trivial Comedy for Serious People is a play by Oscar Wilde. First performed on 14 February 1895 at the St James's Theatre in London, it is a farcical comedy in which the protagonists maintain fictitious personae to escape burdensome social obligations. Working within the social conventions of late Victorian London, the play's major themes are the triviality with which it treats institutions as serious as marriage, and the resulting satire of Victorian ways. Some contemporary reviews praised the play's humour and the culmination of Wilde's artistic career, while others were cautious about its lack of social messages. Its high farce and witty dialogue have helped make The Importance of Being Earnest Wilde's most enduringly popular play.
Robert Eddison, Arthur Lawrence, William Fox, Gladys Young, Monica Grey, Rosamund Greenwood, Elizabeth London, Frank Tickle and Cyril Shaps

A BBC Radio comedy by Tom Wainwright.
Nobody seriously expects a politician to keep the promises he/she makes during an election campaign.
However, after Julian Quark is elected Prime Minister of Great Britain, he reneges on every single campaign promise he made...which may not have been a very smart thing to do, because one day he wakes up to find that his right ear has mysteriously vanished! And that's just the start, because now every time he tells a lie another body part disappears!

Is it possible that there's some connection between these mysterious and continual disappearances of his body parts and his political dishonesty? If there is, he'd better find out soon and do something about it, because the more his own physical being keeps disappearing the less chance he has of stopping (let alone breaking) this curse ...

The Fallow Land was the author’s fourth novel, his first set in the English Midlands around about the time of the first World War. It is a sort of historical novel about a rural world which has long since disappeared, and is not written today. It was to some degree inspired by Bates’s childhood memories of his grandfather Lucas and it is said that it is a least partly the old man’s story. It concerns the struggle of three generations of a farming family in the Nene Valley –most notably the unfortunate Deborah Loveday. Deborah marries Jess Mortimer, who soon leaves her to embark on a life of dissipation, while she remains to work the farm with Mortimer’s old man, a task to which she devotes herself throuhgout the rest of her life with passion and courage, while bringing up troubled sons Benjamin and David. The novel was highly praised at the time of its publication, and the pity is that it is probably largely forgotten today, and it is unlikely to be in print. [goodreads]

The Investigation of a Murder by ERIC SAWARD
The methods of police investigation in a murder case are believed to be well-known. Routine enquiry, occasional inspiration. leading to conviction or frustration. But what is the effect of modern police work on those only casually or coincidentally involved in the case? What is the impact, in particular, on the relatives of the suspect; the man believed, but not yet known, to have committed the crime?

Saturday Drama: To Catch a Thief
First broadcast: Sat 8th Jan 2011, 14:30 on BBC Radio 4 FM

David Dodge's novel is a fast-paced, entertaining page-turner that was subsequently turned into a memorable film by Alfred Hitchcock, starring Cary Grant and Grace Kelly. Now, Jean Buchanan's dramatisation brings it to radio. American John Robie is living quietly in the South of France, trying to put his career as a notorious jewel thief behind him. However, when a series of huge jewel thefts begins on the Riviera, targetting rich Americans, the police immediately suspect he's returned to his old ways. To prove his innocence, and trap the real thief, Robie must resort to subterfuge. But his plans go awry when the daughter of one of the rich American tourists takes rather too close an interest in him - and his past.

Throughout the 20th century, one of the dominant forms of mass media and entertainment was Radio Shows: Drama, Comedy, Mystery and Horror, as well as news and information, all presented in a purely audio format.

The introduction of television is considered to be the death knell of this medium, but the works live on.
