A response video to ThereminTrees, about how God isn’t impotent or useless. ThereminTrees is channel that caught my eye for a good video on how dogma pollutes discourse, yet he seems to have a blind spot for religion and is an evangelical atheist himself. So I wanted to make a response to another video he did on debunking prophets, and point out how ThereminTrees straw-man’s Joseph Smith and the translation of the Book of Mormon. I definitely appreciate some of the things TheraminTrees has to say, I just wish his desire for unpolluted discourse extended to his own discussion of God and religion.

A video discussing the question, is anti-racism actually racist? This is the fifth episode in my series on divisive definitions, and I try to answer questions like ‘what do anti-racists think’, ‘what do anti-racists believe’, ‘what do people mean when they say anti-racism’, and ‘should I be an anti-racist?’ So I do my best to try to define anti-racism, as well as talk about the complexities of the new definitions of racism, the difficulties of activitsts trying to redefine words, what people mean when they say ‘equity’, and how anti-racism is used to justify some crazy diversity trainings. So am I saying that people who push anti-racism are always racists in disguise? No. But I see some pretty racist things being done in the name of anti-racism, and I’m a big fan of judging people not by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.

NPR, a former news source, has lost a lot of credibility in my eyes. It started out running an article in defense of looting, then an article that said that unfettered free speech Is a threat to democracy. These were red flags, but after that, NPR also published several stories with unverified sources that target President Trump. I would be OK with this kind of standard NPR has established, but it isn’t applied equally. Because recently, the New York Post published files from a laptop owned by Joe Biden’s son that if true, and what does NPR say? That this story is a politically driven event, and as such doesn’t deserve to be covered. If NPR wants to have high standards for its reporting, I’m OK with that. But I’m not OK with a taxpayer funded news station having blatantly political double standards.

Here are reasons to vote for each candidate, specifically a conservative breakdown. The US presidential election is here, and in order to get my thoughts straight on who I am going to vote for, I decided to make a list weighing my options, and I thought it might make a good video! Trump hasn’t seized power during a pandemic and has helped with peace deals in the middle east, but he also has a loudmouth and won’t get off Twitter. Biden seems to be a good guy who respects the constitution but evades important questions and picked Harris of all people as his VP. You probably have different thoughts or priorities than me, and that’s fine. I just hope whatever decision you make is a deliberate and informed decision, and I hope that this video helps one way or the other!

This is a response to Sarah Z, a response video because I think she made a bad video essay on debating. Well, I should say a good video essay on debating with very biased examples. Sarah talks about why we debate, and what one can truly learn from a debate, and there I think she did a really good job! It takes a turn for the worse when she cherry picks and attacks both Ben Shapiro and the Quartering. I agree with a lot of what Sarah Z said about debating’s purpose and uses, I just wish she would use examples in a way that was as fair and meaningful as she says she wants debates to be.

I look into the study called Demonstrations and Political Violence in America, and it is pretty biased. This study is known for stating that protests are mostly peaceful, particularly that 93% of protests are peaceful. I go through many of the specific examples it gives, from Micheal Brown, to Rashard Brooks, to Jacob Blake, and the study also covers the activities in Lafayette Square, CHAZ, and Portland. I think this study had some interesting data, and I appreciate having it, but considering the red flags I saw in this study, I still don’t think the term ‘mostly peaceful protests’ applies nearly as often as it is used.

Innuendo Studios put out a video intentionally misreading others, specifically conservatives. I break down the hypothetical situation that was put forward in the video The Alt-Right Playbook: I Hate Mondays. I use a CGP Grey video on how thought germs make us angry to show how people naturally misrepresent others. I also use a real world example of Pod Save America who take President Trump out of context. Ultimately, I think we should sanitize our brains to fight a pandemic of thought germs in a similar way to how we sanitize our hands to fight a literal virus.

The third in a short series answer the question, are Mormons Christian? This episode is called Mormons and Salvation, but the real name of the Mormons are members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, but because I’m trying to approach the topic from a generically Christian perspective, I’m using the Church’s nickname to more easily answer people who have questions like, “Do Mormons confuse being saved?”, and “What do Mormons believe about being saved?” Anyway, I discuss faith vs works, the centrality of Christ’s great sacrifice for our redemption and salvation, and put forward that these discussion on doctrinal differences should never turn into an us and them, that is exactly what the devil would love, spend so much time squabbling over little details that we forget the basic tenets of Christianity.: to be meek, patient, and to love one another.

If you haven’t already seen the first two in the series, you can watch the first: or second:

Is the US Racist? Welcome to a video that shows data about racism here in the US. The concept of systemic racism is nebulous, so I look into statistics and data in the following areas:

Redlining
Inequality
Mobility
Education and job rates
Black names on resumes
Affirmative action
Healthcare
Punishment
Crime
Policing
Police shootings

As I see it, seeing systemic racism in many ways is comparable to seeing a glass as half-empty or half-full. People look at the reality of the amount of water, but then disagree on which is the proper way to view the world. It’s complicated, but I hope you enjoy!

CNN: There are NO Media Companies that Only Attack Trump. Can you believe it? Because here it is. I also thought about the title, "CNN: There are NO Media Companies that Only Bash Trump", but this title seemed to be the best for search. All I can say is that CNN needs some self reflection, and Brian Stelter isnt very self self-aware. If you liked this one, check out this video about Pod Save America: https://youtu.be/fz8YNmJCKdE

Cinema Wins deviated from the usual review videos he does with one entitled “Silence”, and I’d like to talk about it. He talks about how silence is easy, but I disagree, silence isnt easy. Everyone thinks they have the right answers, and I feel like CinemaWins was both sincere and did a great job discussing the hard subject of racism, but I also feel like he missed the mark in places. Everyone thinks their cause is important, and they usually are, but right answers are complicated, and I just feel like CinemaWins video had some oversimplified and contradictory messages, and I hope this video will sincerely add to the discussion and make it more realistic and nuanced.

The second in a short series answer the question, are Mormons Christian? This second episode is called Mormons and the Trinity, but the real name of the Mormons are members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, but because I’m trying to approach the topic from a generically Christian perspective, I’m using the Church’s nickname to more easily answer people who have questions like, “What do Mormons believe about God?”, or “Do Mormons believe in a different Jesus” Anyway, I go over several takes on the council at Nicaea, and the Nicene Creed, in an effort to point out that many things in Christianity are open to interpretation and have been for a while – including the Trinity. And ultimately, I feel we “are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus,” regardless of the specific church or sect of Christianity.

A response video to Rhett and Link’s Spiritual Deconstruction podcasts they did on Ear Biscuits. Rhett and Link are famous youtubers, probably most famous for their show called Good Mythical Morning, and previously they were fairly forward with their faith, but recently on their podcast they did a deconstruction on their faith. They invited others to tell their story, so here is mine. I talk about faith in Christ and belief in God, and then go through examples of things Rhett and Link said that I’ve also heard other people who have left their faith say. I talk about crisis of faith and leaving the ship of faith, as well as address things like Rhett and Link moving to LA and losing faith. Ultimately, I put forward that faith is a choice, and use a personal example of Sazed from Brandon Sanderson’s Mistborn series.

Ultimately, we believe that God answers when you pray, and we rely on that personal revelation, along with the word of God, to teach us and bring us closer to the Savior of the World. And I’d say that makes us pretty solidly Christian.

A video essay that covers why black lives matter is controversial. Specifically, black lives matter is semantic overload – people use the same phrase to both represent an idea and the BLM organization. We have many assumptions about racism against the black community here in the US, but we agree on a lot, and just have different ideas of why things are the way they are. Because we all have different ideas about racism, is it a surprise that we ask why don’t people agree that black lives matter? The organization Black Lives Matter is controversial, and there are many people who agree with the statement that black lives matter, but understandably don’t want to be associated with or confused for the BLM’s actions. So can we all please stop pretending like there is a significant portion of the population that thinks that black lives don’t matter, or that there is a large group of people who think there was nothing wrong with what happened to George Floyd? If we can, I believe we will truly be working towards a brighter future.

A mini video essay about how Gaston wasn’t a bad guy. Kind of, specifically how the mob was right and morally justified in Beauty of the Beast. The morality of mobs is hard to pin down, but after taking a closer look with me, I think you might agree with that conclusion if you consider the villagers point of view and circumstances. The snowflake doesn’t blame itself for the avalanche, and mobs are destructive, so how responsible are the members of the mob for all that went down? I tackle some tough question, and hopefully give you some good food for thought.

Welcome to On the Other Hand! Too often, people don't look both sides of an issue, especially when it comes to political, social, or religious views that are important to us. I created this channel to try to look at both sides of such issues, and especially focus in when someone isn't seeing what's on the other hand. New uploads are on Saturdays, every Saturday if circumstances allow, but every other Saturday is my goal.

I'll do my best to respond in comments or in email if you have any questions, suggestions, comments or complaints. Thanks, and hope you enjoy!
